another nice finish this time from Modric |

Messi requires some help from his team, which provided none. He was engulfed by black jerseys every time he moved in this game, and no one from Argentina could find a way to take advantage.
What was missing even more was an Argentine midfield.
Very obvious from this match, that simply Croatia is a significantly better side, and would likely beat or draw against Argentina 9 out of 10 times if they played.

When Argentina plays with Eduardo “No knees” Salvio and Marcos Acuna in their starting eleven I cannot say I’m entirely surprised by the loss. |

When your manager has double sleeves and is wearing a t-shirt, you deserve to get knocked out in the group stages. LOL

To be fair Argentina IS NOT Barcelona and maybe Sampaoli doesn't know how to use his squad at its full fotential.
But let's talk about Argentina's biggest flop - Willy Caballero. The first goal mistake was even worse than the one by Karius in Kiev. And then it only got worse. It doesn't help thte fact that Caballero as well as Sergio Romero (who before his injury was first choice GK) are pure subs for Chelsea and Manchester United respectively and don't get enough game time which leaves Sampaoli in a precarious state regarding his GK choices.
Speaking of goalies, Liverpool is likely looking for one and perhaps they should look at Danijel Subašić's performance who was the polar opposite. Transfermarkt values him at just 4M Pounds but his value may soar after than the World Cup and will still be cheap than Alisson (who is more likely to join Real Madrid) and Oblak (who is on the verge to sign new deal with Atletico now that Griezmann did it). Better Subašić than taking the relagated Butland who lost his first team spot to Everton's Pickford

Imo this would be too easy.
Yes Caballero was not good. But even if they had not allow any goal with a worldclass goalie, the other 10 players still were shit as well.
The goalie makes one mistake and he is the stupid looking guy.
The offensive is finding no solution at all and this is quickly forgotten again.
The main problem was that Argentina found no way to get through the Croatia defense including the central midfield.
They have 4 world class offensive players in Messi, Dybala, Aguero and Higuain. Hard to play them all but it`s mainly 2 playing only. We could add a not-nominated Icardi as well I guess.
The defense is okay but nothing too impressive while the midfield is totally shit.
Yesterday it had 4 players with an ageing Mascherano playing in China, then one player for the Argentine league, which is good but far from World Cup level and then two players from the Portuguese league, which also has not the top top level.
On the bench players like Banega, Bigla, Lanzini, who in my opinion could have upped the level in the midfield easily.
Also Rojo could have added to the defense trio.
So the problem in my opinion was the midfield line, which surely had not the level needed to beat the heart of Croatia, which is exactly that midfield line around Modric and Rakitic with Brozovic, Kovacic additionally. |

Like Mastercard commercial would say, seeing overhyped Messi fail=priceless.
I love Croatia team, not just for defeating the midget an his company , but overall great team and Modric is incredible, i hope to see them going far in this WC.

Agreed Caballero and Messi are the obvious scapegoats for a lackluster team. Sampaoli really should have found their strategy before the WC instead of going in the tournament experimenting with these things. Acuña and Salvio are really not WC-worthy either. What a mess of a team. It'd be a shame to lose Messi so early in the competition.

@roturn - no doubt Lanzini would work as an extra improvement to a badly ageing midfield, unfortunately he injured his knee (torn ligaments I think) and had to miss the event. However, Sampaoli seems too oblivious and obssessed with the hype given after Chile’s amazing Copa America in 2015, and though certain players could have increased creativity in the middle, I’m not sure there would be better news coming to Argentina. |

I know some teams have only played once but there are no real stand-out teams at this stage.
Russia & Croatia have looked good against (sometimes very) poor opposition. I don't think you can call them realistic contenders for the overall title.
Uruguay haven't impressed.
Spain have played well but struggled to create many chances against Iran.
Portugal are a one man team.
France have been lucky to win 2 games.
Argentina are going home
Germany lost to Mexico and face a battle to qualify for round 2.
Brazil were not too impressive in their opener, Neymar looks well short of form.
England probably played some of the best football of the tournament in the first 20/30 mins but still struggled to overcome a very poor Tunisian Wrestling team.
Belgium huffed and Puffed against Panama until Panama got exhausted in the second half.
At this stage absolutely anything can happen. I think it's been a great tournament so far.

Brazil doesn't deserve to play in the final - I'd be better off with final Portugal-Croatia than one with Brazil

A couple of surprises today.
Nigeria coming back stronger than Iceland in the second half, really makes things interesting in that group. Iceland will face off with the team they almost eliminated in the qualifiers, while Nigeria will look to pounce on a fragile Argentina.
Serbia who was looking like almost sure to qualify for the last 16 has been dealt a tough blow by Xhaka and Shaqiri. The worst for them is that they will now be facing a Brazil squad who look very motivated after beating Costa Rica. That's definitely one match I'm looking forward to!
And now Germany. Sweden didn't impress against Korea, but they have a strong recent history of denying big teams. It should be interesting too.
