From a current news editor to a new sports editor, congrats Mre! You've done great.

Some personal news. Nearly two years after writing this post (btw, how are we still on this same thread...) I can happily announce I've been promoted to being the Sports Editor of this mid-sized newspaper that I got my first "real" job at. The former sports editor is moving on to cover Division I college athletics in another state.

I'm extremely excited to be in control of my own sports section. Every day I go to work I get to share stories and get paid for it. A skill that I practiced and honed here starting almost a decade ago has turned into something I could have never imagined. To all those that have read my work or been a part of this amazing community, you made this possible.

Thank you.

Awesome dude!

Congrats Grin

Am I the only guy that's a bit worried about the EU once again?
This time about the "Ancillary copyright", especially article 13.

Basically it would be such a strict copyright, that we would not be able to publish anything, that has been created by someone else...not even if we edit it. Hoe would that affect you? For example, if the law gets passed, we all need to delete our avatars, since it's mostly just edited pictures, where we don't have the copyright to. Memes would be a no-go as well. So whatever imageboard you use currently(if you even use one), you could forget it. over 90% of the content on f.e. 9gag is copyrighted. It would even go as far as forbidding you to share a link, if that link has the title of the article in it, because titles of articles could be copyrighted.
With that, i could also kill free speech by a huge margin. Not directly, to be fair, but the problem is, that, to ensure the copyright, the EU want to create a big algorithm, which will discover copyright-breaks and would send information to lawyers or to companies. That algorythm could be "improved" to delete opinions that wouldn't fit with the mainstream.

They want to vote for passing that law at the 20th/21st of June, so exactly during the world cup.(as always)

And since it would even affect pcm.daily, i just wanted to hear your opinion.

Is this even the right thread for this? don't even know anymore.

From what I understand it is a benign regulation, though maybe sloppily written. The two contentious points are the "link tax" and the copyright enforcement bots. The former is an attempt by newspapers to get back some revenue they lost to the internet. If a (commercial) website publishes an excerpt of an original news article, the owner of the news site would like some money for that. I'm sure it's not aimed at private people, but at google mostly. The latter isn't that the copyrights themselves get changed, memes, etc, aren't threatened. But websites are supposed to crack down more on copyright infringements and when bots do it, they'll probably create a lot of false positives. For example because they cannot distinguish between a pure copy and a meme. At least these bots are getting better.

Landed in London (last night, 24 hours awake at that point ) and doing some work in the nice cycling bistro The Dynamo in Putney. Good cycling culture here in Britain, although to be fair, in Dynamo it seems to have been imported by Italians (Marco Pantani on the flyers <3 )

And yes, if some folks from London are on here, I am up for spontaneous meetings. I'll be available until Sunday. Take your chance on me. <3

And there we go. Article 11 won with 13:12, Article 13 with 15:10.

Here, for everybody who'd like to read about A11 and A13:

Honestly, I think that gizmodo-piece is fear-mongering. And it's not like I don't worry about a lot of things happening in Europe and worldwide now. The only real point I see is:

"That all sounds decent in principle, but Article 11 doesn’t bother to even define what constitutes a link. Details will be left to the 28 individual countries in the EU to figure that out. That opens the door for political abuse of how news is spread in each country, and it will likely have the opposite of its intended effect."

So it's a shame that they couldn't agree on the details. But: That door is open anyway, if countries want to restrict free speech, they can do so nationally anyway.

Well, the gizmodo site is basically the only english speaking site, that explained it well. I didn't want to translate all the german websites and pretty much high-quality german websites talked about that the same way....netzwelt for example.

Not surprised english language sites arn't covering it, given none of us are EU anymore Sad

netzwelt is pretty high quality in their technical department.
