So, who’s on board for the Ben O’Connor hype train? Discount for Bennett hype passengers too. |

I mean yay, Chaves won! But still a pretty lame way to lose a bet with odds of 10.00.
Yeah me.too
I feel you bro. In all honesty though, I can't be unhappy with a Chaves win. That guy looks like a kid who just opened a box of chocolates.
Froomebot looks as menacing as you could expect. Today was never going to be a day for him, but that guy doesn't play around when it comes to hanging on for dear life.
Cool stage

In the break all day, dropped back to the pink jersey group on the first bit of Etna and then stayed with them while Astana put the hammer down (LLS with a beastly turn on Etna btw) then still enough to come in 12th only 17 seconds down on the favourites group...at 22 years old
Other young talent on show up the volcano = Ciccone (attacks from the break then a top 20), Oomen (break then only just behind O'Connor) and Carapaz. Quite the battle for white this year, I haven't even mentioned the well established MAL nor Schachmann.

Interesting dynamics today.
Yates super strong, but Chaves as well, he had to go out from a lot further don't forget.
There was no Sky train, and thus the last climb turned to stop/start racing which is not exactly ideal for Dumoulin or even Froome (in this shape). Dumoulin can't follow those accelerations which means he has to grind back all the time. I heard/read a lot of people now thinking he is weaker than last year, but I don't think that's the case. Last year it was the movistar train, then 1/2 big attacks by Quintana and everyone for himself so Dumo could TT it to the top.
That doesn't work in a setting like today, he is susceptible to Purito like counters like the one from Yates today. It's going to be hard for him if this is the style of racing for the remainder of the Giro.
That being said. I'm not sure if Yates can keep this form for 3 weeks, and after today I'm pretty sure Froome is on the rise and will have a go in the mountain stages next week. |

MAL imo is being overated.. Yes he is very strong in the mountains but at the moment he's clearly not as strong as he can be. Martinelli suggests he's feeling the pressure and yesterday's crash and bad position 2 days ago suggests he still has problems in handling the bunch in dangerous times.
Dumoulin and Froome saved it, Aru also looks to be building up to the third week. Pozzo, Yates are clearly at peak already. And Mitchelton look incredibly strong (although it's been only 1 mountain stage) and I don't think it's ridiculous to see them win, with Kreuziger Nieve and Haig riding the way they are they can afford to fully protect both leaders like in 2016 Vuelta.
Pinot I'm having trouble figuring out.. He has his usual sprint power but he wasn't able to follow Yates neither create a gap so idk at what level he might be (taking into account that in TOTA he seemed to be fitter than many others)

He wasn't part of the breakaway. That was a mistake on the graphics shown. DDD only had Janse van Rensburg in the breakaway. Still, a very, very strong performance by O'Connor, that's for sure.
For the Etna climb, Yates was insane. Also good to see Chaves finding his legs again, after all he didn't look great on Wednesday. Bennett looked super impressive as well, while Lopez seems to lack the killer acceleration to actually get rid of other GC guys when attacking.
Dumoulin also seemed very strong, I agree with ruben there, surely he will be up there the whole Giro.
But what a great, great first mountain stage that was, especially considering the climb they actually did. If this is a tell for how the mountains will be raced this Giro, the racing will be absolutely top class |

Thanks, quite right. Thought he looked a little old for a 22 year old! Makes more sense now. Hopefully he will try for some breaks later in the race rather than ride an impressive but less exciting top 20. Anyway, as you say, good ride.

Ohhhh what a perfect result Awesome to see Chaves with great legs and Yates just killing the rest of the GC guys there. Mitchelton absolutely dominating the stage, super surprised Chaves managed to sneak into the break. Either would have deserved the stage win really - awesome ride from Chaves, and Yates as best from that GC group. What a start
Bennett in fourth caps it off... I'm so excited for seeing how three of my favourite riders in the peloton can do in this Giro. Aaaaaah be glad I wasn't watching it live, we could be missing bananas for a while
Also, their celebration was weirdly hilarious. They both did their most standard celebration so the winner's photo looks photoshopped a little

That wont happen I think. Finally, Froome is in a position where he has to make up time. Thats good. I think after last few years he is not used to it. Also, he cannot fully rely on that TT which will come later. I am really curious how Froome will be riding.
And another point, maybe its too soon to say this but I think that SKY is not so powerfull. Or at least, Astana is also very strong and Mitchelton - scott too. So I am hoping that there will be much less "SKY trains" .
Tom Dumoulin is riding similar as last year I would say. But how he will tackle Zoncolan thats what I am keen to see.
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

That seemed particularly chaotic, gladly no-one seemed to crash. Great win for Bennett, finding then coming so strongly off Viviani's wheel in the last 50m.

Viviani still looks like the strongest, but it's all about picking the right wheel at the last moment. |

Villela for Astana in the break, first of many stage wins for the squad inbound and reach mythical 2015 output. Minimum 5 to equal 2015. Lulu would have been better option than Villela though. Hirt tomorrow then.

Looked like a nailed on break but Mitchelton have stabilised it and are even chipping it away under 5 minutes. They might be after another explosive finish from Yates for bonus seconds...
