The TTT was definitely good. The fitness did have an impact on the Prologue but it has improved over the first week. So I don't think that should be a factor.
It's the 2000 variant according to the cdb file.

We started off the Tour well, sitting pretty in the GC after a promising TTT. Now it was time for the harder stages to start.
Stage 6 was another flat stage. A lone break stayed away for the entire day and was caught just a kilometer from the finish. I stayed out of trouble.
Another flat stage on Stage 7 and more of the same. The break was cuaght 5 km before the line and the result was from a bunch sprint.
Rain greeted us on Stage 8. Four riders were a part of the break. Pantano took the lead in the KOM by taking enough points on the climbs. The break were caught again and the sprinters took the win.
I woke up feeling heavy-headed, and in general a little uneasy before Stage 9. It was probably the rain from yesterday. I tried to ignore it and thought I could ride it off. Nothing untoward happened on this day. The early break got caught again, and the sprinter fest continued.
Stage 10
Wouldn't you know it, the first mountain stage of the TDF and the perfect moment for me to fall ill! It wasn't bad enough to consider retiring but I was pretty badly choked up.
The race started with a twelve rider break was was reduced to five after the first climb. Phinney fell on the descent but recovered. More riders attacked on the second climb, but they weren't among the top contenders. The peloton was reduced to just 22 riders at the top of this climb. More riders attacked on the .HC climb but the GC favourites were still riding together. We were still down eight minutes to the break. Barguil, Formolo and Van Garderen were still in this group. The peloton was now 36 riders strong when starting the fourth climb. With 14 km left, the break had a four minute lead on us. Duteil was the only big name dropped as we started the climb to the finish. Nairo Quintana attacked first with 12 km left. Formolo and some others followed. I found myself riding with former teammate Dumoulin. I didn't have the strength to attack myself. The illness was taking it's toll. Quintana dominated the stage to win. Formolo finished 4th. I finished 9th, losing over four minutes. I was 7th in the GC with Formolo up to 5th. Pigeon took the lead in the KOM standings. We moved down to 4th in the team standings.

The off day did not help. I was still under the weather and could not take part in much of the warmup ride on the rest day.
Stage 11 had a couple of intermediate climbs but ended in a flat section. Only one rider was in the break of the day. He was caught on the final climb. The sprinters survived the climb and a bunch sprint decided the stage.
Stage 12
I was not among the favourites for this climbing heavy stage. I was feeling better but still had not fully recovered. The eight rider break became one rider less on the third climb. Another was caught just before the final climb to the finish. Yet another was cuaght with 16 km to go. The rest were caught 2 km later. I still had four teammates with me at this point. I was dropped again when the top contenders made their move. Formolo was in the second group on the road. Barguil and van Garderen were in the third group, all ahead of me. I finally caught up to their group with 3 km to go. There were six riders ahead of us. I finished 9th on the stage, losing nearly three minutes once again. Formolo finished 2nd to move up to 4th in the GC. I actually moved up a place to 6th.
Stage 13 was slightly hilly. The five man break were not caught and they took the win. The GC contenders stayed out of trouble.
Stage 14
Nine riders formed the break on this stage. Riders started getting dropped from the second climb itself. I did some of the pace-making on the third climb and managed to reduce the peloton to 50 riders. We still had five riders in this group. Two riders were caught after the descent of the third climb. Petito, the U25s leader, attacked 11 km from the top of the fourth climb. Aru and Nairo Quintana followed suit. Another breakaway rider was caught as more attacks materialized. Formolo got dropped, showing the first signs of weakness in this race. Barguil was stronger here and was in one of the groups ahead of me. I caught up to the Barguil group after attacking. At the top of the final climb, we were chasing the two remaining riders from the break and six riders who were my rivals in the GC. Formolo was a minute down to us. We were not able to catch up though. I ended up losing three minutes again. I lost a position in the GC, so did Formolo.

A shame that the best realistic result you could get once you recover from sickness is a 5th place. It's obvious that you aren't having the "Luck of champions" that it's needed to win a race like TDF

@Aquarius: Target is the top 5 for now unfortunately. Hopefully this illness goes away soon. Else things won't improve I'm afraid.

With my 'ill-timed' illness playing spoilsport to my chances of challenging for the GC win, it was all about damage control as I headed into the third week of the Tour. I was still not back to full fitness but definitely a little better than a couple of days ago.
Stage 15
Formolo was among the favourites for this tough mountain stage. I was hoping against hope that my body held up better than the last couple of days. The day's break was eight riders strong. Van Garderen did most of the pace-making on the second climb. When he got tired, Barguil took over. The peloton was down to only 35 riders at the top of the climb. Only Barguil and Formolo were left in the group among my teammates. Aru, Power and Kwiatkowski fell on the descent and couldn't catch up again because of the high speed of our group. The peloton slowed down for a few kilometers with around 15 km to go, allowing the earlier fallen trio to catch back to us. We sped up again with 9 km left. Ibanez was dropped, and eventually Barguil too. The break was caught with 6 km left. Power's crash was having it's efect as he was dropped next. Nairo Quintana and Jungels were the ealy aggressors. Meintjes and Adam Yates chased them. Yates caught up to the front group and left them behind eventually. I caught and passed Meintjes before the finish to cross the line in 4th. Formolo lost time and dropped to 7th in the GC. I moved up to 5th.
Stage 16
The rest day after the last stage helped me to finally get back to my best. the illness was behind me and now I wanted to see how far I could push on in the standings. The six man break built up a sizable lead. the peloton was down to less than a hundred riders on the third climb. Three of the break were caught on the fifth climb. Aru attacked, followed by Quintana and Yates. I didn't counter. The peleton soon reeled back Quintana near the top of the climb. The peloton split up with me joining Quintana, de Plus, Power, Lopez, Traino, Jungels, Meintjes and Kwiatkowski in the third group on the road. Formolo was dropped again. Soon the break split up and Yates dropped Aru ahead of us. I finished in the same group, 7th place on the day and held on to my GC position.
Stage 17 was a transitional flat stage. The only moment of excitement came when Meintjes crashed. he did recover and finished in the pack behind two men, who survived from the day's break.
Stage 18 was even more docile. The eight man break survived and fought it out for the win.

With the final weekend approaching, I had one final chance to make up places in the ITT. This was however, unlikely, despite it's length. I was nearly five minutes down on Aru in 4th! I had it give it my best shot.
Stage 19
Phinney and Palik were among favourites for this ITT perfectly suited to the specialists. I was one of the better Time Trialists among the GC contenders. Jungels and Kwiatkowski were the best among the top 10.
The weather alternated between dry and rainy all through the day making it very hard to maintain a rhythm. Times were slow but the fastest man in peloton still set the fastest time and won the stage. That man being Dumoulin.
I went past Meintjes in my run, having started a minute behind him.
I also went past Formolo in the final sector, who had started a further minute before me.
I finished my ride 4'18" behind Dumoulin but still as high as 16th place on the day. I gained 2'35" on Aru, but it wasn't enough to gain a place in the GC. There was no change in the GC top six. Formolo dropped to 8th, overtaken by Kwiatkowski in the GC. Our best on the day was Palik, in 11th.
Stage 20 was an ill-placed flat stage before the final ride into Paris. I was unwell again. A group of seven breakaway riders stayed away for the entire day and took the stage win. The easy ride in the peloton meant I did not have to expend too much energy.
The ride into Champs Elysses on Stage 21 saw four riders try to ruin it for the sprinters from the break. They were caught with 10 km to go. I tried an attack with 5 km left but couldn't get away. Mads Pedersen won the stage.

Yeah, clear green jersey winner. As for Sinha, on paper I feel this should have been a podium, the old champs past their prime, the new crop not quite ready yet. Shame about that illness. |

Seems like I missed quite a lot since that awesome classic win. Decent result, and a good showing overall. In the coming years the tour may be even more successful, let's hope for that

@Tamijo: 5th is ok but should've been higher. Mads left everyone in his dust!
@Ripley: Yeah it should've been a podium for sure. The second week was ruined because of the illness. Talking about the competition, Nairo is on his last legs at the top. Will start declining rapidly from next season. Aru is still up there but I have beaten him before. The Yates are the problem really. It's very hard to beat them in their respective first GT of the year and they've still got a few years left at the top. So expect more me vs the brothers duels in the future. No one else seems to be in a position to really challenge in a GT at the moment.
@Croatia: You missed three months and a couple of stage wins in that time. But the big one got away this year. Hopefully what you said comes true in the future!

A Top5 was the goal since the illness and at least you got that. Maybe it's time to reconsider if it's worthy to "crash" every year against Tour, and instead try to win both Giro and Vuelta
