Team Sky, Done Right: Paris-Nice
TheManxMissile
General Story Writing Background
Spoiler
The multiple Award winning writer, TMM, is back!
Anyone who read my main story, Karl Hammarling, and dipped into other not so long last efforts will know i don't focus on racing and reports. This story will have many of those personality and individual storylines, but i will also cover most races and many stages as well. So think of a hybrid mixing those personal styles with traditional team stories.
I have not played PCM properly in at least two years, if not 3 or 4! So expect some bad 3D racing, but that just adds to the challenge and drama.
And we all get to re-live and rediscover PCM10 and all it's quirks. This was my first PCM and it's sparking my love of the series all over again.

Specific Story Introduction
Spoiler
This is a story on Team Sky. The major changes will be detailed in the first few posts, and then we'll be off on our journey. The aim is to run through 8 seasons, bringing us from that first year in 2010 through to the modern day 2018 season.
Will Sky still get a British Tour winner? Will they still become the dominant force in Grand Tour racing?
Will TMM manage to write a story and not include a Hammarling?

Great to see you back in story writing! Grin I have read Karl Hammarling's story at least twice, and if this story is only half as good as Karl's, it will be an awesome story. Also, doing things "right" with Sky can be really interesting Pfft

An Idea Is Born

9th July 2007
Dave Brailsford: The National Cycling Centre has been a real success, we've shown this growth in our results at the '04 games, the World Cup races since then, and in the number and quality of the road riders we're starting to put out into the pro road scene.

James Murdoch: I can't deny that, and that the work you're doing looks on course to deliver a very successful Beijing Games. Everyone knows our association comes primarily with football, and we want to change that and become a real controbuting force.
Then there's the size of the crowds over the past few days, reports are pushing 1million in London and several tens of thousands more through the Counties.

DB: So, can we take this as a sign you and Sky will move forwards with the sponsorship scheme?

JM: We will support British Cycling and the National Cycling Centre. If we see further improvements in the road side over the next year to 18 months then you'll get the funding for a pro team as well.

Risky move due to the currect events, or will TMM incorporate the doping news into the story? I have a feeling he might dare it.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

TheManxMissile
A Focused Plan

1st September 2008
James Murdoch: This shouldn't be a long meeting, i think the actions of the past year speak loud enough!

Dave Brailsford: Two Road Medals, Seven Track Golds, 3 Track Silvers, 2 Track Bronzes and 6 Grand Tour stage wins from one of our graduate road riders. Yes, i'd say that speaks for itself.

JM: You've got your Pro Team funding Dave. We know it won't come together in time for 2009, so that gives you over a year to get everything ready. Team Sky will hit the ground running in January 2010.
There are some conditions from us though. Sky refuse to be linked to doping! We've seen what Operacion Puerto has done to teams and their sponsors. Team Sky will be clean.
We also don't want our support of the Track team harmed, so whilst we are happy for you to help set the team up, you cannot run it. Find a dedicated manager for it, and you keep running the NCC and Track programmes.

DB: That sounds reasonable. I have a few names in mind, and i'm certain such an attractive project will be easy to fill with talented managers. Let's meet again in the new year and i'll present my recommendations for General Manager and associated staff.

Brave Men Indeed

6th February 2009
James Murdoch: Hi, I'm James. So you're going to be the Manager of Team Sky?

Aleksander Hammarling: Yes. I'm Aleksander Hammarling. Dave and i have had several meetings and interviews, going over the concepts and laying the foundations for a new Team Sky.
Marcus Ljungqvist is an old friend of mine, and is in his last year of contract with CSC. I want to bring him in as a Sports Director.
Scott Sunderland has been recommended by Dave to come in as our Senior Sporting Director.
Brian Smith we've spoken to, and he's interested in the project and coming in as a Sports Director.
Julian Winn is the final name on the shortlist, having managed the Road teams in Beijing he would fit well as Sports Director.

Dave Brailsford: I've agreed with all the suggestions, and Aleksander and I agree these are the men who'll make up the backbone of the staff.
We've also made contact with Pinarello to supply equipment, and with Adidas for clothing.

JM: Well i guess i'll have to agree. Funds will be made available ASAP for you to start working on contracts. A first official announcement will be made on the 26th. Lets get to work gentlemen.

DB: We'll have another major meeting in September to go over the final confirmations with you, James.

AH: And between now and then we should have everything sorted out and signed up.

This will probably be a little rough around the edges, been a long time since i really wrote properly for Daily. Just hoping it can be a bit fun and different.
"Right" should be fairly clear, none of this shady business Wink

Well, we might get there in a few more seasons time. Or perhaps the team can keep itself on the right track from the very beginning Wink

@Jandal - But will there be more than one?.... yeah, probably....

Final Preparations

25th September 2009
James Murdoch: Ok Aleksander, run me over the current state of things.

Aleksander Hammarling: Scott Sunderland has agreed to join us as Senior Sporting Director. He'll act as my #2 and keep us on track through this first season.
Ljunqvist, Smith and Winn all signed on as Sporting Directors and will help with planning and races in the usual ways.
We've agreed terms with three full-time trainers: Armand de las Cuevas, Arturas Kasputis and Ismael Mottier. We'll have a 5 strong scouting network targeting the next generation of talent. And we've got two full time Doctors heading our physio and fitness department: Manfred Stiegler and Rasmus Daugaard Kristensen.
Our HQ offices will be out of the NCC for the time being, with Logistics in Deinze, Belgium and Ops in Quarrata, Italy.

JM: So the backbone of operations is set up. Run me through the roster.

AH: Kurt Asle-Arvesen, Michael Barry, Sylvain Calzati, Kjell Carlstrom, Dario Cioni, Russell Downing, Greg Henderson, Nicholas Portal and Chris Sutton are all signed up for 2010 only.
Chris Sutton, Steve Cummings, Juan Antonio Flecha, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Hayman, Thomas Lofkvist, Lars Petter Nordhaug, Serge Pauwels and Morris Possoni are signed up through 2011.
John-Lee Augustyn, Edvald Boasson-Hagen, Chris Froome, Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Geraint Thomas, Davide Vigano and Bradley Wiggins are all on three-year deals to the end of 2012.

JM: What about Mark Cavendish? or David Millar?

AH: Mark is under contract at HTC for 2011, and he's very happy with them. We'll monitor him of course, but we might have to accept The Missile won't be a Sky rider. David is also under contract, and when he becomes available i'd rather push for him to join as a DS than rider.
I understand his doping past, but if we said no to everyone linked to drugs we'd have roughly 6 people on the team. He could be a valuable player in a few years with his experience.

JM: And your plan and goals for the team?

AH: We'll obviously confirm our year-to-year goals every Janurary. Long term i want to get a Sky rider, hopefully a Brit, the Yellow. I'd like to add Pink and Red as well. A Monument inside 5 years as well.

JM: So we're all set heading into the Autumn and off-season?

AH: We are, and you'll get a full preview along with the wider world at our January launch.

@purepasd - Far too many hours spent with Team Sky back then. Flecha will be key to success in the first couple of seasons, can we get him the big Classic win he's missing?

@jandal - Henderson will be the main sprinter this first year, but may not last much longer than that if the transfer market is favourable. Want to work on Cummings FTR but he's a perfect workhorse rider. And naturally EBH is exciting, let's get him a few monuments and maybe something Green Wink

@Raziz - Thanks, i hope it will be

Cycling Weekly Interview

15th January 2010
Cycling Weekly sat down to a pre-season talk with the new Team Sky manager Aleksander Hammarling, and his main team leaders of Bradley Wiggins, Juan Antonio Flecha and Edvald Boasson-Hagen...

Cycling Weekly: Aleksander, what are you hoping to get from this debut season?

Aleksander Hammarling: I think the Tour Down Under will give us a better feeling. If we can put 10 wins on the board i'll be very happy, and just generally being competitive. The best guide will come once we get to Paris-Nice and Tirreno where i want to get in the Top10 of both. Juan can certainly challenge the big cassics, and Top5 in de Ronde and Roubaix are reachable.
But the big goal is of course the Tour and Brad.

CW: So Bradley Wiggins, all in on the Tour?

Bradley Wiggins: Not quite all in, but it's the big goal. I'll test my legs at Paris-Nice and maybe Catalunya/Pais Vasco/Romandie. Lots of training before getting a good tester in the Dauphine.
I want to go one better than last year and crack the Tour podium, and my year is designed around that goal. But with just one long time trial it will be a challenge.
After that, i'd like to come to the Tour of Britain and shoot at the Worlds ITT.

CW: Juan Antonio Flecha, you're the teams cobbles man and one of the most experienced riders.

Juan Flecha: Yes, and it's no secret the races i'll be aiming for early in the season. De Ronde and Roubaix are the biggest and most prestigious, and i want to try and win them. At least a Top5 if the win doesn't happen, and that can depend on the form of Boonen and Cancellara.
But we've also said i'll crack the Ardennes trio as well, certainly i want to try and put a cat amongst the pigeons there.
And we're thinking i can go to the Vuelta hunting a stage win or two. That'll keep the sponsors happy, but i'm also excited to shine on home soil.

CW: Edvald, you joined Sky off a very good showing in 2009 and with plenty of excited followers.

Edvald Boasson-Hagen: Yeah last year i got several big wins under me, but Sky is such an ambitious and exciting place to be! I'd like to defend my Wevelgem title, but with a rider like Juan alongside i don't feel pressured to do so.
My year plan is a bit mixed. Some classics, one-days, a few short tours. Bradley and Thomas [Lofkvist] can go for the GT leadership, i get some freedom to challenge a variety of the Pro Tour classics right across the year.
And i think the Worlds course really suits me, so i will be peaking late on for the trip to Australia.

CW: Thanks for your time gentlemen. Best of luck starting out on this new adventure with Team Sky!
