Stage Profiles

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/profiles/pt/pt_cdl.png

A good mix of stages to make every kind of rider have something to look forward to in this race. We start of with two categorized flat stages with a flatter TT sandwiched between them. The sprinters will want to have their fun at this point because they'll be struggling going ahead. It is a safe bet to assume a TT rider will have the leader's jersey at the end of Stage 3. We start going uphill from Stage 4, and the profile alternates between mountains and hills till we round out the race in the Queen Stage on Stage 8. The climbers will be top favourites to win here. The punchers should enjoy themselves on stages 5 and 7 but they are likely to lose huge chunks of time in the mountains. Only one former winner riders this race this year...

...and he is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Thomas Dekker, who won the first ever edition of this race, back in 2007! He should be the top contender among PT riders, combining his strong climbing, with near-top puncher and TT skills.

However, top favourite for this race is in fact a PCT rider, whose team is here on a wildcard. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Romain Sicard is the best climber in this race, and he is also the best puncher among the favourites! On paper, he should be the overwhelming favourite to win this race. However, his recent form has been a little sketchy, so he will need to step up his game. Not that it will matter though, wildcards don't give the riders and teams any points to take back to the PCT!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Abal hope to collect much needed points for their teams in this very weak field. All three should be surefire top 5 favourites, and this could become the battle for the final spot on the podium. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Monsalve is better in the hills, the other two are much better TT riders. It remains to be seen which terrain proves more important.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali is a solid climber with all-round good abilities but his acceleration means his best shot at winning races is to attack from distance. Otherwise, he has the skills to challenge the above trio, and is perhaps even better than them, as a package, going uphill.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Keinath and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig are interesting picks for this race, who will want to utilise their their overall abilities to try and challenge for top 5 places. Generally, neither of them would be very high up the favourites' list in a race like this, but such is the luck of the draw, and this is a great opportunity for them to get a good result.

The other riders who can challenge here are mentioned in the table above.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.pngCarapaz80717271767764

The riders mentioned above are either all-rounders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kangert who can be competitive in all the important terrains in this race, or like the others, who are strong in a couple of terrains but quite weak in one of them.

With the best of the best stage racers slugging it out in Switzerland, this is the perfect opportunity for the PT teams racing here to gain some valuable points over their rivals. After all, with more than 10 riders with >83 climbing abilities on the startlist in the Tour de Suisse, some of them will surely under perform and/or be unlucky.

With three mountain stages on offer, the climbers are sure to enjoy themselves in this race. They will also be the favourites to win this race because of those three stages. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard is the strongest here too, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Cattaneo likely to be his strongest competition. The likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Galta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Nerz, Reis (Porto-Prio) andpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz will have to ride out of their skins in the mountains to put themselves into a good GC position, because of their relative weakness elsewhere.

Most of the punchers are unlikely to be near the top of the GC unless something drastic happens on the hills. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png McCarthy are much stronger than the others on the hills. The fact that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard features here too, just goes to show his strength going uphill.

Although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek is the fastest man in the race, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Kennaugh's backups put him at a slight advantage to the German for wins in stages 1 and 3. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vandersbiest is likely to be their strongest challenger. The abilities of all the sprinters behind them are quite similar and it is a hard choice to choose one above the other. Perhaps pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauff's superior acceleration will see him get an advantage.

Big PCT startlist here. Obviously a lesser (Pfft) race than the Tour de Suisse in regards to the riders but still, much better sprint field. Should be a very entertaining race, looking forward to the reports!

Would love to see Haig and Dekker do well, Hirt with a big opportunity to score Moser some more comfort points, Vlatos is Festina's biggest hope for points so he has to get that stage win. Obviously, go Siskevicius in the hills! Thanks for a very nice preview Abhi!

This GC startlist is night and day to Suisse Shock Great for me though, if Mattia can get a poduim here it would be awesome. Best case scenario is if he wins stage 2, like he did in the Giro, but there are some good TTers here that might hinder that.

Looking forward to this Grin

Big chance for us to score much needed pts here. Abal fighting for Top 5 atleast, some good places on the ITT by our guys hopefully.
Cort Nielsen for a decent GC. Bystrom either go for a stage or drag Abal to the finish on those hilly stages.

Thanks for the preview.

Funny startlist. Orange should be very much unbeatable with this scenario. They are definitely going to poach a great amount of points from PT teams.

We couldn't feature a strong enough team here, so we decided to lay almost all our eggs on Suisse. Reis to try and fight for a valiant top10 and the rest to maybe try and go for a break.

Good luck everyone and thanks for the preview Abishkek!

With our nightmare in the Tour de Suisse still staying alive, we really need a good performance here!

The setup looks good. Except for hills, we have a contender for every terrain: Haig as a threat for the Top-10 if he delivers in the ITT and can hang on in the mountains/hills.. would really really love to see him doing well again - while I regret my comment, that I would prefer a better result for Haig here over Morton in the TdS.... please, do something of note here.

And Durbridge then... amongst the two best TT specialists.. this HAS to be a podium at least and I would very welcome his first (!) ever stage-win for our team. It's about time, really. His season has been a joke so far. It feels like he is a 76 TT rider, who can't even go for a random TT win at some point Sad

Saber amongst the possible options for bunch sprint as well. Definitely not as promising as Durbridge (dare you, if you fail once again), but maybe also him can finally do something notable for us... other than that, I hope Lowe provides some depth/support in the mountains and maybe Haig's non-existend favorite status will allow us some breakaway appearances (which doesn't seem to happen in the TdS at all).

Hard to see past Sicard for the GC win. I wouldn't mind, obviously Smile If Haig somehow goes to Top-10 this race, I will be fine (even though only a miraclous top performance could make up for Morton's rocky horro picture show in Switzerland).

Thanks for the preview!

The startlists of this season is just all over the place. I think I could have won the PT by just swapping two races for Lecuisinier this season. Giro instead of Vuelta and Dauphine instead of Deutschland.

Incredible how most teams did end up preferring Switzerland... We have nothing in either races in order to gamble on the PTHC races this season. Seems like a bad choice.

Very gracious startlist here, opening up chances for a good result.

Nerz looks capable of finishing Top 10 as long as he survives the hilly stages well. I'd put a question mark over that but performances by similar riders in similar stages this year make me hopeful he can do that.

The big news is though that Ciolek arrives at the best sprinter of the race, a seal he'll certainly fail to convert into success.
There won't come any better chances anymore though, with his trusted leadout at his side and in action for maybe the last time ever? I can't imagine him getting preferred status by the game in another race this season.

Overall, I hope we have enough support for Nerz here in Heider, Mager and Chevrier to fight for a Top 10 in GC, and I'd like to see Ciolek raise his arms once or finish on the podium twice.
Assuming Herklotz can somehow stay on his bike and ride it decently fast over in Switzerland, this would complement the points gained there perfectly before we head into the TdF.

Eritel were going to have a wildcard here rather than Suisse, until CT returned his wildcard application late. Pity Pfft

Opportunity knocks for Keinath then, to see what he can do. All round stats going for him but will need to keep up in the mountains.

Gastauer may hinder the GC chances on the hill stages, but I like seeing him as top puncheur in a race. And some opportunities for Van der Lijke too.

Decent enough by Van der Lijke for 4th.

Presumably Gastauer crashed? No other reason for him to lose that much time.

It´s kind of relaxing to not have sent a sprinter to the same race as Abal for once, Abal can just ride easy in the peleton instead of in the front of the pack and chasing the break Smile

But the next stage I want to see a very good Abal!

cio93
What a fucking joke. Easiest stage win ever if Lander just led out his own sprinter instead of a random Evonik guy, who will go on to outscore us in another race with another pathetic lineup.
