A WT podium is always welcome, and he was close to doing even better.

Vuelta a España (2.UWT) Stage 9/21, 183.5 kms
Juan Andres Pardo opened the GC debate on the first labeled climb of the day, the 3rd cat. Puerto de Cabigordo. Given that GC 19th was just 2'47" down, the pack upped the pace from this very moment; they caught him. Meanwhile 5 out of 13 breakaway riders reached the summit jointly; they were Hansen, Cameron Meyer, Briganti, mountain jersey Tomio & Power. On the next climb, Puerto de San Rafael, Alaphilippe dropped a first little bombshell. With over 6km to the top he put 25" into Sam Vandenborre. Wilco Kelderman and Rubén Fernández went with Alaphilippe right away. The GC group was thinned, but most of the contenders hit the final climb to Aramón Valdelinares together. The breakaway would have to defend a lead of 1'15" for six more kilometers but Hirt's attack finished their hope. Hirt was caught as well and nobody seemed to have much left. Chávarri left Sam's side with less than 3 kms left. Nineteen men left in this group. On the less steep final kilometer, Sam tried to anticipate. His early sprint surprised multiple riders and could even get him a second stage triumph. His effort was not enough to keep Alaphilippe from winning this stage. It was to gain a few bonus seconds on Dan Martin; Meintjes and Fernández were the main losers of today, crossing the line 33" later than the others. It's a good thing the pace didn't go too high, it wasn't Sam's best day. Yet he was still capable of bending things to his advantage.

I could expect that Sam would be in the fight for the GC win after his performances during the season, but this is beyond expectations

It's beyond anyone's I think, including his own. Time to get out clichés such as 'there's a long way to go' now. Especially when heading for Compostela.

Slip ups are often close when things are running almost too smoothly. Retaining focus will be as important the racing itself.

Great to see you've found some time to do so, and thanks for the kinds words! The results are pleasing too, but there's a long way to go.
