Nothing to write home about as yet indeed. Will be interesting to see how Sam does against better climbers that should be less well-rested. I have a feeling he's going to quit the safe side sooner rather than later. Smile

Thanks!

I never share full stats for any of my riders but this post contains some of the main ones for our highest OVR riders. Vandenborre's haven't changed since.

La Historia del Día
i.imgur.com/S67dTaa.png
The first, 12 men strong, group which featured Klever was chased down. The next one did take off as Emanuel Buchmann came first atop the cat.2 Boquete de Zafarraya. Vanmarcke, Hoelgaard, Lindeman and Tomio later fought their way back to the wheel of Quick-Step Floors' German champ.
i.imgur.com/m0YxPeH.png
Over the next cat.3 climb, Buchmann had dropped the others once more. Near the last sprint, both him and Vanmarcke saw the bunch at about 2'.
i.imgur.com/PigsVo0.png
The two remaining leaders came back together, but the peloton gradually reduced their lead. Inside the last ten, both parties peeped at each other through the trees. All would come back together near the La Zubia finish.
i.imgur.com/oS5Awjd.png
Klever intended to set the pace but an early acceleration compromised it all. Daniel Martin quickly put 35" into 35 riders without race leader Kittel.
i.imgur.com/FeXdBYK.png
Sam made his way to the fore to take charge of the chase himself. Nerz, Kelderman, Alaphilippe & Valverde all fought to keep up as Eder sat 7th.
i.imgur.com/MhdeU9r.png
Less than two kms to go now and Alaphilippe, Meintjes were about to be dropped as well. The rest sat 50" down, as Martin's lead'd shrunk to 25".
i.imgur.com/UkregU9.png
A new push made the two surrender. Martin kept 15" , 800m from home.
i.imgur.com/laNOjKz.png
Sam stood on the pedals one final time, almost bridging now; 400m left.
i.imgur.com/hCPnaBX.png
So did Martin, it was neck-and-neck 200m from the line. The first chasers were already losing a minute, an E3 group came at approximately 1'15".
i.imgur.com/CrN9RVQ.png
The ultimate margin was half a wheel, but that's enough. A summit finish win and a move into the red jersey are big achievements in a maiden GT. All fellow contenders concluded the day suffering a time loss of a minute.

So that'll be it for 2017. It's been a great year for me personally and for this story, having won an award. On top of that, reaching over 100.000 reads on close to 1.500 posts spread over almost 75 pages is way more than I had ever imagined when I kicked off this story.

Many thanks to all of you followers for stopping by so frequently in the past year. I'm hoping to see you back for lots of Ruralvía action going into the new year. All the best for 2018!

Many thanks for the kind words you two. Seems like I'm doing a good job, I'll try to keep it that way Grin

Wasn't expecting Sam to win either, yet the lack of strength of the contenders surprised me even more. Steep muritos early in La Vuelta often bias the balance of power though, so nothing's been decided as yet. Cool

La Historia del Día
i.imgur.com/8iTJ4ZR.png
Fourteen riders attacked right after the starting signal. Robert Power was the best climber on paper, Giacomo Tomio the first GC threat - 10' down.
i.imgur.com/mavf3al.png
Tomio was the first to conquer cat.2 Alto de Íllora, and reclaimed the lead in the mountain jersey standings; the others would return going downhill.
i.imgur.com/nI1xbPC.png
Tomio also won the next and last KoM sprint atop Alto Ahillo. Most of the initial group was still keeping up quite well. The pack sat at 3', 36km left.
i.imgur.com/gkXR3UX.png
The advantage did not go down fast enough, so the winner'd come out of this group. Ahead of the uphill finish in Alcaudete, Lindeman accelerated.
i.imgur.com/jEHN5hv.png
An incredibly strong Tomio left the rest behind, and passed Lindeman as well. Just before the flamme rouge, the Italian gapped the Dutchman and took 20" on the rest. The peloton started going faster, but still lost 1'30".
i.imgur.com/liplO4p.png
Daniel Martin tried an attack right outside the last 2km. Meintjes followed as Kelderman, Fernández, Alaphilippe & Vandenborre tried that as well.
i.imgur.com/3W2bGtC.png
Tomio eventually picked up a clear, very well-deserved first win as a pro.
i.imgur.com/HxfoG1j.png
Vandenborre got back to Martin; the above contenders all got the same time. Chávarri dropped out of the GC top 10, focussing on his stage win.

La Historia del Día
i.imgur.com/NFSyfHM.png
Aldo Lature joined the breakaway, that had been established by Matteo Busato (Cannondale), Eliot Lietaer (BMC), Patrick Clausen (Trek-Segafredo).
i.imgur.com/B33F413.png
Tens of boring kilometers later, several crashes coloured the final third of the day. The break lost Clausen, the pack's victim was GC 4th Bongiorno.
i.imgur.com/7NEIzef.png
Lature tried a late attack when the bunch was about to make the catch. The other three bridged, then Lietaer accelerated near the 5-to-go mark.
i.imgur.com/0xdjzlx.png
Vandenborre tried to stay out of trouble being a part of the sprint train. As Lietaer was reeled in, our train was split. Our sprint was over already.
i.imgur.com/RmomUvu.png
Coquard finished the job at the back of Sagan's perfect leadout. Giacomo Nizzolo & Marcel Kittel put their hands on 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
i.imgur.com/nsUIqMC.png
Today's schlimazel Francesco Bongiorno ended up losing several minutes.

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/IMdf7zg.png
Emil Wang took the first initiative for the break of the day. He was joined by Rosskopf and Duarte; they helped him get a maximum lead of 9 mins.
i.imgur.com/WSRShqf.png
Thomas Moses' acceleration allowed him to join the three men out front. The pace went up and the thoroughly thinned pack caught up right away.
i.imgur.com/k3glGp1.png
Nathan Van Hooydonck attacked next, nearing to the start of the last lap.
i.imgur.com/nYpQb5C.png
His plan didn't last very long either. What rested was a group of about 30 riders, including Ion Izagirre, Ochoa and Henao; less than 7 km to go.
i.imgur.com/wIZTB3V.png
Ion Izagirre's last-minute impulse on Côte de Ty-Marrec was not strong enough. Adam Yates took the fore followed by Lotto's Laurens De Vreese.
i.imgur.com/WtCp47A.png
Izagirre tailed this duo, yet all three were taken by surprise by Laporte, who'd launched from behind. Luckily Ochoa had chosen that very wheel.
i.imgur.com/WOIF0oA.png
Hitting the barriered zone, Diego surpassed the Frenchman. Adam Yates was challenging these two at the other side of the road; only 300 m left!
i.imgur.com/r9n4nTp.png
Too much for Ochoa and Laporte, as both had to settle for a top 3 place.
