As much as I like and root for Movistar, their national jerseys are simply abominations and it really bothers me, for one... I really hope they clean it up in 2018 with the new blue look, because yes, they are winning the Spanish NCs again. |

Cycling is a popular sport in Spain and Movistar want to advertise their brand in Spain. It's as simple as that.
From what I understand, Movistar are a fairly major company in Spain and the Hispanic World. I doubt very much they would take on a major sponsorship deal because "someone in the marketing department likes cycling". They will be doing it for the business benefits. As soon as those benefits don't justify the amount they are paying to sponsor the team they will pull out, like most sponsors do at some point.
Do Movistar do anything in Spain to promote Cycling?

I agree that at a lower level there are instances of "fans" sponsoring teams. But at the pro tour level the sole purpose of the sponsors is to advertise their brand. They wouldn't pay millions of pounds to basically fund a cycling team if there wasn't any financial/business reward.
I think we're getting slightly off the topic of horrible national championship jerseys anyway

Movistar surely will have some interest in cycling, meaning some high executive prefers it over football etc. At the moment they are the only spanish pro tour team with the only two spanish pro tour stars. Actually their continued investment is (as far as I know) largely linked to South America and Nairo Quintana's presence on the team. They want to expand their market presence there and gain share, so a poster boy like Quintana who is a symbol for south american rise in sports is most welcome. I suppose a cycling team with its 20 mio budget is a sound investment for them. It's definitely better than to be just a brand on a football club shirt.
Similar situation is with many other cycling projects. IAM, BMC, even Sky is a result of a high-exec having a passion for cycling. In all instances however the projects needs to have a high sponsor value and eventually bring an economic benefit to the company. Same can be said about teams suc has Astana and Katusha that were born out of passion for cycling and/or some megalomania. Both teams are not necessarily going to exist in say 2-3 years, I recall there was already some discussion back in the day. Hm, come to think of it, not even a legitimate maniac but at least cycling enthusiast such as Tinkov, who by all means is a crazy dude but also crazy rich dude, saw his investment into the sport merely in a sporitive sense but was always rambling about sponsor value etc.

But owning the exclusive broadcasting rights to La Liga, Formula 1, MotoGP and bunch of other tournaments for Spain (and other countries) is a lot of better deal than investing in cycling alone.
Make no mistake, in every sport where commercial branding is prevailing you will always see the corporate colors than the colors of the British, Italian or hell even the Greek champions. There is no other sport that uses this system for national championships. Sure, in wintersports (FIS, IBU and FIL to name a few) implement a similar system where the bib is in different color (yellow or red mainly), but they are to designate the current World Cup (or Discipline World Cup) leader, World Champion, Olympic Champion or Tournament leader (Tour de Ski, Four Hills, Raw Air etc.) and DON'T HAVE bibs for national champions (although seeing someone like Kamil Stoch or Johannes Boe wearing custom NC bib during competition could actually be interesting)

Can't believe no-ones commented on the TDF Wildcard announcement!
Wanty, Cofidis, Direct Enegie and Fortuneo. Three french teams plus the top PCT team. No spot for Vital with Coquard.
But we do get Guillaume Martin with Wanty, Vendee based Direct, Barguil with Breton Fortuneo and Bouhanni with Cofidis.

Because it was the case when Sojasun and especially Bretagne rode their first TDF. Since 2014, they seem to fucus more on the best PCT teams, like Wanty or Bora until 2016. When Bouygues, Cofidis and FDJ left the WT, it was very difficult to get a wildcard as a non-french team, only super-squads like BMC or Cervelo got it.
