The stage looked good until the last 7 km :/
The expected drop in GC happened quicker than I hoped

Alarcon = Bewley of the race, congrats to Hugo Boss.
Happy with Velits this time. Active, risk taking and delivering a nice result. Podium spot seems to be in game for him. Would be a great result to top his career as this is his last year before decline. Should be a great fight between maybe all 7 guys behind Alarcon in the current standings.
@Gustavovskiy I think Alarcon's ACC stat plays a role in Alarcon's advantage. But if a rider can protect him, while other favourites are spending their energy, it plays a big role surely as well.

I think its a good combination of the two. Both here and on the last hilly stage he benefitted massively from his team, catching his rivals for him and saving his energy for a laiter attack. Acc is really helpful for making an attack stick too.

Good stage for my team! Relatively speaking that is of course.
Scarponi back into the top 20, and Dzhus close to the top 30 now

Hopefully Grosu is alright after the crash. Brambilla with an outside chance to finish in the top 10 here, while top 20 seems to be the maximum Aru can get here. Hopefully he will go for some breakaways too in the final week. Expecting the same for Majka, who has been really quiet so far.
Alarcon is a monster. Securing Hugo Boss another year in the PT at the very least.

Well, at least Nibali can descend as his climbing's a fair way off here.

One of those stages my riders aren't good in. All those descending already did cost Olivier and Keizer a lot last year. One of those stats that became more and more important.
Hopefully he can gain back later on.
Nice report SN and give one with all those early moves. |

Oh come on, Alacorn. That's too much. I never liked such Armstrongesque stage-wins.. congrats though, also to Velits.
Morton did well too gain time on the remaining podium contenders. Obviously, it ain't smart to let Velits get such a big gap. But at least he did ride some strong 40kms. That's quite a thing actually. Here's hoping he will pull a Velits move like today somewhere in the last week. Can't accept another big loss on Velits though. Alacorn is in his own league unfortunately. But the battle for 2nd ain't over!
Dyball with a tough day to control the thing. Alacorn/Velits better not team up to repeat those tactics Come on, Lachlan! Keep on fighting!
Needless to say: stunning report. Even though I got extremely nervous when the gap grew so big with still so many kms to go.

That was not good. Vasyliv completely collapsed in the end after looking like a safe bet for a top 20 on the stage. Dropping to 23rd in the GC on a downhill finishing stage really isn't good.
Also getting bollocks from an early attack with a 74MO rider is sad. This was on paper a pretty good stage for Affonso to move up quite a lot. Instead he ended up with a similar result like if he wasn't going on the move. A bit of KOM points, though not enough to climb into the top 10.
We have to get a bit of Coquard luck to salvage anything here.

Sorry I haven't been able to follow this more closely the past week. Busy times.
Just finished catching up on reading all stages posted so far. First of all; great reporting! It's always clear where everyone is.
Then on to my team. Good start to the Giro by Formolo. At some point he was 10th in GC, beating some stronger riders. I'm afraid he has started to run out of steam a bit in the last couple of stages though. But great to see Kruijswijk making up for that with a brilliant performance in a stage that was absolutely savage in terms of gaps.
Sosnitskiy and Konrad are also doing a decent job. If all stay strong and don't crash out like Agudelo just did, we're going to score a nice amount of point from GC and Team ranking.
Very entertaining Giro so far. It also helps that I like Alarcon as a MG rider.

What a stage. Only downside is Vosekalns. But the perfect scenario upfront, with the awesome duo batteling out the victory. What a win for Alarcon, great racing from Velits too.

The gift that keeps on giving!
Was afraid that Alarcon would get hindered by his DH stat here but apparently not. No reason for him to wait with 65k either if noone wanna follow^^ Awesome colllab with Velits here too surely helped in the last part of the stage to hold off a strong Morton, pipping Velits for the Win was the cherry on the cake here. What a race already!

This is starting to look like one of those earlier Tours of America, when there were only a handful of teams taking part and Pellizotti taking one third of the stages
Another outstanding victory for Hugo Boss. Congrats dev.
It's impressive how every single mountain stage produces gaps and how wide these gaps come to be.
And what to say about another outstanding report. It makes the atmosphere so much more interesting. Thanks SN! Massive touch of class with the standings graph!

Indeed. ACC seems to be an important stat for a climber, but that should only matter for the duration of an attack. Alarcon's dominance spreads widely after his attacks, hence why I'm praising his squad. He seems much more fresh than anyone in the later part of these stages.
Brilliant tactical choices dev, I would love to be on your shoes!

Well, congrats again dev
Abal once again showing some great stuff, will be a nice fight with Monsalve!
My bet is on Monsalve. But starting to look good after Abal almost 2 mins down to Cattaneo. |

Cheers Gustav, I agree, picking all my good domestiques seems to help Alarcon alot here. If that was what you meant with tactical choices Excited to see if he can continue at this pace in the final week.
