Too bad none of the exhausted escapees could help him near the end. Couple of tricky stages left though.

Today's succesful breakaway attempt featured 5 riders: Federico Zurlo, Giovanni Pedretti, Rik Beugnies, Michel Koch, Flavien Dassonville. Fede's partners in crime all favoured the flat routes. The peloton took a day off. The pack gave up to 12 minutes. They'd remain out of the office until the last 30 kilometers. The only overall contender to be caught off guard was GC 7th Alexander Kristoff, who'd end up outside of the top 10 as a result. For an unknown reason, Zurlo lost contact with his group inside the final 10 km. He would have to dig deep in order to keep the four within reach. Fede did make his way back right when the sprint for the victory started. Despite being the main sprinter of the group, Federico ended up paying for the earlier efforts. He came home second, behind Michel Koch (Bora). 1 | | Michel Koch | Bora - Hansgrohe | 5h05'31" | 2 | | Federico Zurlo | RuralvÃa - Seguros RGA | s.t. | 3 | | Giovanni Pedretti | FDJ | s.t. | 4 | | Flavien Dassonville | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 5 | | Rik Beugnies | Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise | s.t. | 6 | | Marcel Kittel | Team Sunweb | + 2'21" | 7 | | Fernando Gaviria | Movistar Team | s.t. | 8 | | Caleb Ewan | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 9 | | Magnus Cort Nielsen | FDJ | s.t. | 10 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Dimension Data | s.t. |

The peloton didn't spare any effort to prevent a 13-man breakaway from escaping. Afterwards, we had to wait until the second Ardennes climb for a new attack; breakaway habitué Lindeman left the pack behind for now. Federico still had yesterday's stage on his mind and impulsively decided to bridge. He'd soon lose track of the climbers in Lindeman and Pedretti. He managed to catch up again once, until reinforcements joined them on the second ascent of La Redoute. The fresh forces were Berry and former GT contender Porte, along with climbing talents Williams & Le Lavandier. Berry (look near the motorbikes) survived the longest until Kiserlovski, Van Gestel and Herklotz flew by, 12 to go; no moves to change the GC so far. On the last lap, Herklotz was dropped. Vliegen bridged, then got dropped as well. Tiesj Benoot, who is a potential GC threat, dug deep to catch up. Neither Benoot nor Van Gestel had anything left to really challenge IAM's Croatian veteran for the stage win, which was his first ever in a WT race. Sam was our top finisher in 10th, yet he had already given up on his GC. Ednaldo managed to finish in the same time as he finally moved into the top 10 thanks to a 6" bonus picked up at one of the intermediate sprints. 1 | | Robert Kiserlovski | IAM Cycling | 3h37'02" | 2 | | Tiesj Benoot | Lotto - Soudal | + 10" | 3 | | Dries Van Gestel | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 4 | | Jasper Stuyven | Lotto - Soudal | + 52" | 5 | | Zdenek Stybar | Team Katusha - Alpecin | s.t. | 6 | | Caleb Ewan | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 7 | | Michal Kwiatkowski | IAM Cycling | + 1'11" | 8 | | Fabio Felline | Tinkoff | s.t. | 9 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 10 | | Sam Vandenborre | RuralvÃa - Seguros RGA | s.t. |

At 19 y/o in this field of sprinters rising above themselves? I'll take that.
Could be a tricky one if there's real racing, we're up for it.

Roy Windhorn was today's first attacker, as he founded the final break of the race along with Fabio Taborre, Julien Simon and Jack Haig. Their gap over an easy going pack grew to a maximum of eight and a half minutes. The climbs inside the last third of the stage featured narrow roads, so we made sure to hit them sitting at the front. The gap had shrinked to 3'10". The breakaway remained together until the 2nd intermediate sprint. The first to get dropped was Fabio Taborre, 28km left. These three had 1'55". Only a couple kilometers later, Jack Haig went solo. It was him against a 40 man elite group (including Sam, Juan Sebastian, Ednaldo & Aldo). The overall top 10 was in for a change because Flakemore, Boom'd been dropped and Geraint Thomas had been forced to abandon due to a crash. In the last 5, Lorenzo Rota (125) was the fourth out of 10 to lose contact. The overall contenders group was 25 at the finish, but they came too late to deny Haig a well-deserved first win of the year, previously having won Montréal. Caleb Ewan, Fernando Gaviria both sprinted to a podium place. Ednaldo and Aldo finished near the back of the elite group, and the two of them climbed the final overall classification of our maiden Eneco Tour. 1 | | Jack Haig | Team LottoNL - Jumbo | 4h54'41" | 2 | | Caleb Ewan | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 3 | | Fernando Gaviria | Movistar Team | s.t. | 4 | | Marcel Kittel | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 5 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 6 | | Magnus Cort Nielsen | FDJ | s.t. | 7 | | Giacomo Nizzolo | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 8 | | Jasper Stuyven | Lotto - Soudal | s.t. | 9 | | John Degenkolb | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 10 | | Alexander Kristoff | Lotto - Soudal | s.t. |

A very good race for him overall. Great to see that the smartly snatched 6" from that intermediate sprint made a difference.
