For clarrification: micro-transactions have a place and a right to exist. But that place is in a free-2-play game, where the mtx's are the only income stream. Not in a full retail £60 game.
This - that's the platform they were created for. I also think micro-transactions in a full priced game are fine as long as they are cosmetic or only give new perks/features that don't influence the gameplay of others. That's when I think they ruin the game.
I still disagree with the last part. Microtransactions have no place, at all, in a full retail game. Doesn't matter if they are just cosmetic.
Because again, it's things that used to be standard in gaming. It was a huge part of gaming that cosmetic changes would be a reward for completeing certain actions or difficulties. Now instead of that we have to pay for them.
It's like taking Goldeneye, from the N64, and charging you money to play as Sean Bean instead of Pierce Brosnan. No gameplay change, purely aesthetic. Used to be free, now it would be a paid extra.
Or Mario Odessey. Contains like 15-20 different outfits all for free. You earn them by exploring the game, not by paying extra money. What Nintendo have done is provide that extra content for free, made it look really cool, and incentivised me to play the game more.
Compared to 2K's view, where they are incentivising me to not play the game and just by those options instead. [Not that Nintendo are perfect].
Or i could wider to a game like Forza, where certain modifiers and skins/paints/decals were included in the game and unlocked via progression and specific challenge completeion. But now are locked inside paid boxes or in DLC.
Hey, I'm not saying I like it. I really don't. I think it's ruining the progression system in games quite a bit, and I may not buy the games because of it. I'm certainly not going to buy any microtransactions in them. But, I think it's a smaller problem than when the games basically become P2W even when you've paid the full price tag.

Don't get me wrong here, I DO NOT like them and am not arguing that they are good for the gaming community. I am just simply saying that if someone WANTS to spend extra money on a game they have that right to do so. Surely its not necessarily fair to other people that either cannot afford to or do not want too.
To your point #1, I agree with you on that one. However, I also think that in game achievements should not be ridiculous like achieving max rank online or defeating 1000 opponents online (Which took me almost 150 hours of gameplay on WWE 2K14 and I am one of only 200 players that even got the platinum trophy).
To your point #2, yeah it gives richer or lazier people an advantage, so skill isn't exactly as valuable as it used to be which sucks. I hoped that 2K would not follow what EA did but it looks like this is becoming the new way of gaming unless things change.
Question to you, what about games like "Golf Clash" on iOS and Android? It's free to play but you are able to purchase in game "boosts" to give you better golf clubs and golf balls, giving you the edge on an opponent. I spent $4.99 on a pack 2 weeks ago and finished in the Top 10% of the tournament, where when I did not purchase anything I was in the Lower 20%.

@TMM
what do you think of microtransactions in games like Overwatch?
They are to buy lootboxes which give out cosmetic rewards and in game currency to buy the cosmetic rewards you want. There is nothing in them that gives you any in game advantage over anyone else and the revenue gain from the microtransactions seems to replace the DLC method of other games as they still update the game adding new maps, heroes, cosmetics and even a new gamemode for free as part of their patching, not just the free balance changes that you would expect with that type of game.
Lootboxes themselves could be a whole other discussion so I'm more on about how the Microtransactions are used as an alternative to paid DLC, meaning everyone has access to everything for the game, the microtransactions just get you the cosmetics quicker than earning the lootboxes through gameplay.

@Jdog - I think mtx's have a place in F2P games, because that's how those games make money. But again, i value skill in games over being able to buy boosts. So i don't like the idea you can drop $5 and jump to the top end of the leaderboards, but because it's F2P i'd be less annoyed at someone doing that against me because i've not paid anything for the experience.
@Sammy - Overwatch charges a full retail price. That's why mtx's shouldn't be in it. Any full retail game has no business including mtx's. At all. Full stop.
The pay off for Blizzard is that constantly releasing new maps and heroes is in keeping the game fresh to attract more new players to them and in building out a strong interest to generate more Esports opportunity.
Almost all Overwatches added content was preplanned before original launch, so the money generated isn't needed to fund that development and support. Equally they make enough money off the basic retail price to cover the original development and contuined additions.
The fact it's cosmetic doesn't matter. Because this is something that would have been standard included content at release only a few years ago. Many other fighting games and moba's include alternate skins at no cost and without using a lootbox system.
The quicker argument i don't get. It's saying that the game isn't fun and the better option is to not play the game and just buy your way forwards. So for your £60 you get a game that is so fun, it's better to spend another £5 to not play it and skip to the reward. I don't get it.
Lootboxes are a slightly separated issue, only slightly, and Overwatch i hate for having them. It would go a long way up in my mind if it cut Lootboxes and just offered skins at a straight price. At least then it's not encouraging gambling in kids.

Micro transactions are overpricing a product, nothing more, nothing less.
People are tricked into paying more for the same content by exploiting some flaws in the human brain. |

Not if its an exclusive DLC, then the only way to obtain it is to buy it.

Well there goes the Americans internet access. At least we're no long talking about how Alabama nearly elected a paedo, or how Trump set Middle East peace back decades Throw enough sh*t on a fire and it all smells the same.
But seriously, damn Ajit Pai for ruining it for all of us (and yes, this will affect all of us...).
Also Disney bought Fox.
wtf, today's been really bad for consumers...

@Jdog - Yes they are, just waiting for Law to catch up with reality...
In other news: Uber officially a taxi company, declared by the European Court of Justice.
That's brilliant news as they will have to conform with transport regulation across the EU in full. Anything that makes Uber a more reliable, trustworthy and just overall better company is good. Because my word are they still f*cking terrible.

Nice to see you stopping by, Avin. Was just going to nominate you for the most missed member award. Guess I don't have to, now that you are still around
I'm busy as hell with a way too big christmas party tomorrow. I hate family at times at least when they are all visiting at the same day and time.
In Sagan we trust. Have a nice christmas, mate.

Good to hear from you, Avin! I sympathise all too well. Life certainly drags you in all kinds of directions and some things you have to leave behind.
That said, reading a ManGame report during my lunch break always fills me with good feelings. Even though I'm not overly active commenting, I still enjoy very much following the action! |

So for Christmas i got a copy of Lizzie Deignan - Steadfast (her autobiography), which was cool. Going to be a great read and she's one of my favorite cyclists.
But the best present, maybe ever, was a copy of Half the Road by Kathryn Bertine... and it was autographed!!!! So goddamn amazing!!!! And then i got her to tweet me!!! Amazing
Did anyone else get any good cycling presents?
