My annual state of Origin post (I've probably posted about it earlier in the thread - shouldn't be hard to find)! Basically Australia's greatest sporting rivalry. NSW v QLD. QLD have won 9 of the past 10 series (of 3 games). Currently half way through the second game and NSW are leading 16-6. This is huge as NSW also won the first game, meaning they win the series if they win tonigh. Here's a stream for anyone interested:

Stream won't work in countires NRL is broadcasted in (USA, Germany(no idea why), UK, Aus). Can bypass with a VPN though. It's definitely worth watching, it's absolutely brutal.

My now biannual NRL State of Origin post
It's the DECIDER! The last game in a three game series between the Australian states of NSW and QLD - who don't like each other at all. It's an incredible and brutal sporting spectacle that would make great afternoon viewing for you European users!
It's currently half time (40mins out of 80) and QLD lead 12 - 0. NSW looking like staging a come back however

Queensland too clinical for NSW. Fifita and Woods very ineffective and the whole team coughing up too many errors. Pretty good game but such a slow play-the-ball.

NRL grand final has just started! Mmelbourne Storm v Nth Queensland Cowboys.
Melbourne finished the season first and were by far the best team by a country mile - near impossible to beat. The Cowboys are complete underdogs as they finished in the last qualification spot for the finals (8th), and only because another team didn't win their last game. They're also missing some of their best players, yet they've still made it to the final! They'll be the first team to win from 8th if they can pull it off. They have an *ok* chance at winning, they always show a lot of heart and tend to be behind for most games before coming back and winning at the death, very exciting to watch.

It's hopelessly depressing for most this year I think. Already had a guy break his leg and the referee interfere with a try by knockhimself my a player out of the way. Fun times!

18-0 for the half. Would love to see the Cowboys have a big second half, not out of it yet but Melbourne looking good and Cowboys a bit tired.

As a huge Melbourne supporter, great to see the "Big 3" play and win for the final time. They all had huge games and it was fitting for them to play so well and have such a good year. Commiserations to the Cowboys however who played with plenty of heart and determination, yet didn't quite have the quality (Thurston, Scott missing) to hold up against the Storm. |

As much as I'm not a fan of Melbourne, watching 3 of the best players of the last decade destroy the Cowboys in the final was pretty incredible. I really think the only team that could have tested Melbourne was Parramatta, but they couldn't even get past Nth QLD in the end. Would have been interesting however to see Thurston out there.

Agreed, have no love whatsoever for Melbourne nor for Cam Smith but that combo has been unreal. Billy Slater has done an extraordinary job to get back to this level. Cowboys just did well to get that far, didn't expect much of a contest.
And now fingers crossed we see Classy Cas at their best next weekend.

Brilliant from the Storm, as a casual fan they just never disappoint me. Cronk was an absolute superstar and he will definitely be missed, but they just seem to keep finding gun players to bring in to replace whichever star players leave.

Just posting here to say the RL World Cup is on at the moment, being co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand and PNG. After an unnecessarily complex group stage, there were a couple of surprises. The biggest news is that Tonga beat New Zealand.
Yes, you read that right. Tonga have had couple of star players from Australia and New Zealand "defect" back to their ancestors' country and have become the first second tier country to beat one of the big three (AUS/ENG/NZ). As a result, they have landed on the easier side of the draw and have a realistic chance of winning the whole tournament.
The other big upset was Lebanon defeating France. Lebanon was the lowest ranked country to qualify, with the team mostly consisting of semi-professional players from near Sydney who had Lebanese ancestry. Despite this, they won their first match ever at a World Cup and effectively eliminated a team who had reach the quarter-finals in two of their last three attempts.
Here's how the quarter-finals look. Fiji have to be the unluckiest team, drawing New Zealand despite winning their opening three games with a combined margin of +140.
A1 Australia
B3 Samoa
B2 New Zealand
D1 Fiji
B1 Tonga
A3 Lebanon
A2 England
C1 Papua New Guinea

It's been a good tournament thus far, some really good games (Tonga's particularly) and a great reception in NZ and PNG (certainly in comparison to the somewhat lukewarm response in parts of Oz).
Finals should be the best in years, Fiji NZ looks tasty although I imagine the Kiwi pack will run away with it, Lebanon's spoiling tactics give them a shout but again I figure Tonga will bulldoze them, PNG have played some good rugby and will be full of passion but with their error count and the match in Melbourne I expect England to win, while Samoa have been disappointing but will hopefully take the game to the convicts.
Whatever happens, Tongan flag manufacturers must be over the moon.

The Port Moresby atmosphere has been absolutely fantastic, the Welsh must have had no idea what was coming before that first match! It wouldn't surprise me if Garry Lo gets some kind of national award following the tournament.
There are some legitimate reasons why the Aussie reception's been a bit underwhelming. Part of the problem with poorer crowds in Australia is that we've been getting all the matches which don't feature NZ or PNG (except the Samoa/Tonga blockbuster) which were always going to be lower turnouts with less excitement. These have generally been played at smaller venues like Cairns or Townsville, or at cities which aren't traditionally big in rugby league (Melbourne, Canberra and especially Perth).
IIRC, the NSW government also refused to give any funding to the tournament, so there's only the one game in the state which is Australia's biggest in population and presumably participation rates.

It's been a pretty good tournament so far, one of my favourite moments was the
heated NZ haka v Tongan Sipi Tau before their game last week.

I think you're over-estimating rugby league's popularity in Australia a bit. Even though we've got the NRL's best team, rugby league in general wouldn't even be one of the top 5 sports codes followed in Melbourne. The 36K crowd for a group match was a pretty incredible result for down here IMO, but that was at a 50K capacity stadium. The Melbourne game this year was actually held at newer venue which has a max capacity of 30K, so the 22K turnout isn't too bad.
Having said that, I totally agree with the other two home games, people just don't seem to be turning up which is a bit of a surprise. The promotion doesn't seem to have been great, but the TV broadcaster has been doing a good job of advertising the Cup so it's not their fault. An AUSvNZ semi should still easily sell out if it happens.

Sorry for that misunderstanding.
I think that shows how low we're aiming, got 36k last time round for a pool game and for the opener of a growing event we stick it in a 30k venue so it can't be better, also making it seem like a lesser event. Melbourne may be AFL territory but it's a much bigger city than Cardiff and it's got a champion RL club with 20k members, it shouldn't be cutting the attendance in half.
Once they lost Michael Brown from the organisation it seemed to lose all impetus and the organisers just put the games on and hoped for the best. 7 seem to be doing a good job and the viewing figures are good. Fingers crossed for Brisbane doing well.
Not looking forward to getting up so early on Sunday though.
