Good going in Burgos so far. Last stage will decide it. Not so good in Pologne in the GC but the KOM is something worth hanging on to.

Good that Klever is still the leader of KoM standings. I think I understand what Ion wanted to do, but I think that "move" was not so "Klever" Pfft

It may look different in the picture but Klever's chances ended with a different GC rider attacking and Ion countering the guy.

Pologne was always going to be difficult with only few rested riders in shape available. Ion's strategy was probably a bit off too, yet a second place on the previous stage and a very probable mountain jersey are not bad at all.

Time to strike in Burgos now!

Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) i.imgur.com/xFpGiMO.png
Stage 5/5, 164.9 kms
i.imgur.com/uJ4gPUH.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/Mdb5VZB.png
Two groups of attackers merged to form an 8-man break of the day. Lok Cheung, Jelle Wallays, Rubio & Jay McCarthy were the best known faces. Cheung secured the KoM jersey on the first climbs before getting caught.
i.imgur.com/UzA77yw.png
Intxausti gave it a try on the third climb, but no-one bothered to follow.
i.imgur.com/KyiGMO5.png
He would barely make it to the next one. All together, 35 kilometers left.
i.imgur.com/kF0LIV7.png
The next attack appeared on the cat.1 Pasil de Rozavientos (5.3 kms, avg. 8.1 %). It's Burgos' Argentinean climber Juan Nicolás Martínez Madrigal.
i.imgur.com/omG3j0O.png
He was reeled in but accelerated once more on the final climb to Lagunas de Neila. Inside the last 3km, the elite group behind him was down to 28. Sam Vandenborre upped his pace from the saddle as he created a gap.
i.imgur.com/OTV7RpM.png
Martínez could keep up when Sam passed. He'd built a gap of 25" on the other favorites when Rafal Majka attacked them; about 1.8km to the line.
i.imgur.com/W0j7K2k.png
Majka kept closing in on Vandenborre. Only 14", with 700 meters to go.
i.imgur.com/hscGgpz.png
Fortunately, Sam could go stand on the pedals one more time. Majka did finish in the same time, which means he is the winner of the overall due to better finishing positions in the other stages. Ruben came third today, concluding Spain's only Hors Catégorie stage race in a solid sixth overall.

I was really surprised that Sam's climbing so well already. It's nice to see his efforts are rewarded with a win and a jersey. Smile

Imagine going to la Vuelta with two HC overall wins in the bag! Still the legs are good for sure, let's stay safe in Eneco now. Smile

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) i.imgur.com/OXwpbMJ.png
Stage 7/7, 132 kms
i.imgur.com/XllIHLc.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/3llBnZq.png
Angel Cerezo joined the breakaway. Within the group, Gianni Meersman had, by far, the most dangerous sprint. The riders in this group were six.
i.imgur.com/Ew7G8wm.png
Their lead came to less than 35" on the final lap. Cerezo went double or nothing 5km from the line. None of his companions could counter swiftly.
i.imgur.com/aT8kX7Y.png
Meersman brought the others back, and the lead sprinters would join the mix too, under the red kite. Angel had to start his sprint from 1st place.
i.imgur.com/piqDqEG.png
Not too many riders could pull him back in the end, as Demare secured a second stage win and the white points jersey. Kudus missed the boat and lost his young jersey; Ion Izagirre improved 2 places in stoppage time.

Stage 2/7, 178.5 kms
i.imgur.com/Q6PeLLL.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/WWfbch0.png
The first part was stuffed with narrow ditch-side roads, where the bunch was looking to keep control. Afterwards, 5 riders broke away: Lindeman, Donato, Simon, Spengler and Roompot's Goeree in the very last position.
i.imgur.com/IBHePlP.png
The high pace and crosswinds caused several splits within the pack. Koch and Mullen ( GC third and second respectively) were both caught behind.
i.imgur.com/svBhER3.png
Cobbles specialist Spengler won all three intermediate sprints, then went solo heading into the final 15 kilometers. His lead over the pack was 55".
i.imgur.com/J8d13fu.png
Sunweb'd take care of him, then upped the pace even further. Our riders struggled to follow and started to disappear towards the rear of the pack.
i.imgur.com/Puusoww.png
Lars Boom created a gap on the Grebbeberg, a short climb 3km from the line. Teammate Cavendish and Kittel were limiting the Dutchman's lead.
i.imgur.com/yqVIAsT.png
They caught up with him under the flamme rouge. Out of view, Fernando Gaviria, Caleb Ewan & Magnus Cort Nielsen were following close to them.
i.imgur.com/AUgN2qB.png
The Colombian had an impeccable timing and he powered through to the win. Our day was silent but we made it without suffering any time losses.

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/6D83fIX.png
Two French riders became today's escapees. In the pit along the course, Julien Simon & Flavien Dassonville had increased the advantage to 5'30".
i.imgur.com/5Zl8Ljs.png
Around 100 boring kilometers later, Simon was the last man standing. As he was about to get caught too, Sam Vandenborre guided our train for Juan Sebastian Molano towards the finish, close to the city of his birth.
i.imgur.com/gSd5L0p.png
Our guys hung on quite well, until Degenkolb's turn blew everyone away.
i.imgur.com/FR8nGwP.png
Marcel Kittel easily finished the job as he won by a huge margin. Molano handled himself well finishing among the best 10, along with Fede Zurlo.

Story of the Day

Nine riders attacked early on this year's cobbled stage. Sergent, Broeckx, Lietaer, Van Emden had joined the group ahead of the Holleweg cobbles.

Many mass crashes occured on the slippery, narrow roads in the Flemish Ardennes. Among others Lutsenko, Boom, Vandenborre hit the ground.

Next to impossible to keep track of every crash, split and favorite caught behind, so we skip to the last 20 kilometers. Seven of the initial escapees still had 2'30" over this reduced bunch, 30 men strong. The sole difficulty left was the second Oude Kwaremont ascent. The elite group contained 4 of us; we were missing guys as Lutsenko, Phinney, Terpstra & Lampaert.

Ian Stannard, set to return to Team Sky for next year, powered away on the renowned cobblestone climb. He soon got the escapees in his sights.

Cortes was the next to show off his good legs. He would quickly put 30" into the GC group he'd just attacked from, passing a guy from the break.

Cortes caught up with the survivors from the break, but came too late to counter Stannard's next attack. He wasn't getting any cooperation either.

Cortes recovered a little and missed another attack from the breakaway. He had to push again inside the last two as the GC group almost bridged.

Stannard's gap at the line was almost a minute, enough to move into the white leader's jersey. Lorenzo Rota concluded in second place, 58" down.

A fully recovered Stig Broeckx beat Cortes for the third place, as both of them failed to gain time on the group with the contenders for the overall.
