[CT] Repsol - Honda 2017 | Rider Evaluation. Leaders
Shonak
Sick mountain domination incoming in the CT. Having Cunego in the team was surely the wet dream of many managers during the years, and you got him now riding for a debut team. I'm also happy that my former rider Gilbert has found a new good home after his 1 year stint at Strava. Nice work on that team.

@Shonak I had Cunego really high in my pre-list of FA rider so being able to sign him was great. Also having Gilbert is great. I hope that between both can take a few wins and score good points for the team in the hilly races
Hopefully Valls can deliver and dominate the mountain, although same late deals have brought even more great climbers to CT that could challenge Valls

MEXICAN NC JERSEY REVEALED
When we announced that Ignacio Jesus Prado would be riding this season in Repsol - Honda in a loan from Becherovka we forgot to mention that he is the reigning Mexican champion, so in the last few days we contacted Norwegian designer hanspetter61 to make the Mexican NC for Repsol - Honda. So this is what Ignacio Jesus will wear during the season. Stunning, right?

FULL SQUAD REVEALED

i.imgur.com/tlzNenh.jpg

In yellow loaned in riders, in blue stagiares

Team manager has revealed the full list of riders who will ride in the inagural season of the Repsol - Honda team. The manager is confident about the squad he has built, and that they will be able to achieve all the goals that he set for this season.

Promotion is not the goal for this season, although if we are able to promote, we won't deny it Pfft The actual goal is to finish inside top15, so with this team we really believe that it should be a easy goal for us.

The other four goals are all in Rafael Valls' hands. He has to win Vuelta al Tachira, in his first race for the team, make it in the top5 in both Tour of Bulgaria and Tour d'Andorra and in the top10 of Giro del Trentino. Of these goals, the only one that we might not achieve is the win goal. Rafael might be the best climber in the division, but you never know what will happen in a bike race. Anyway, we'll find soon in the season whether or not Valls is able to win Vuelta al Tachira

The other big question is if Damiano and Philippe can work together to maximize the points gained. We don't expect lots of wins from them in the hilly races, but an ocassional win will be welcomed.

Also, Morgan Kneisky should have a lot to say in the TTs this season. He is not the best TTer, not even a top5, but with his great back-ups, he should be a lot more regular than other better TTers

For the cobbles we only have Marco Marcato, who should find himself more confortable in the hilly cobbled races that end in flat, where he could show his good sprint to even win a race.

The other guys are basically domestiques, so we don't expect too much of them

Repsol - Honda looking like they are in good shape to immediately make an impact in the CT. Good strength on hills and mountains, and Marcato may be solo but should do a competent job in the hillier cobbled races. The obvious gap here is the lack of sprint options which will need excellent race planning to overcome. I'm confident that Repsol -Honda has leap-frogged straight over a number of established CT teams and expect will be one of the strongest new CT entrants. Top 15 should be comfortable, although pushing up into the top 8 or 10 might prove tough.

Valls is a fantastic team leader in CT, and in any previous CT season would be the stand-out stage racer. In 2017 though, there are going to be quite a few contenders for the title of "best climber in the division" that Valls publicity department is churning out Wink. Mr Eastman (Azteca), Mr Suaza (Edie Stobart) and Mr Penasa (Kulczyk - DMTEX) all might have something to say on the matter.

Personally, mountains have always been a favoured terrain of mine and you've got that terrain covered! We at Philips have stayed away and I'm glad we did that. Add a couple of MG legends and you've got a team everyone will keep an eye on. You should be challenging for one of top spots I think.

@Scorchio If I don't claim that Valls is the best climber, he might think that just doing some top 3-5 results will be fine for the manager, and that's not what i want Pfft

Me when trying to sign an sprinter
pbs.twimg.com/media/Cy1RHVSXUAEha4P.jpg

@Eden95 I hope it also Wink

@Abhishek My feeling is that my team is like a safe bet to be around 8-15 places, with a solid leader as Valls who will score great, and teams like yours, which depends more on depth than in a leader, might go higher or lower depending on what PCM decides  Anyway, the actual goal is to achieve all 5 goals, so i'll have a good base to achieve promotion in the next season

Martii_Scots01 If you want Pozzo to be included in that list, i won't do anything against that Pfft

PRESENTING OUR TALENTS
JAIME ROSON
We have two Spanish riders with full contract his season who are yet to be maxed. Actually, for those guys it's their first season in the MG, and Jaime Roson is the best of them, and also the most promising rider.

Here we have his current stats, and the four possible combination of stats that he might have when he is maxed. My prefered choice is the first one, but the other possibilities are still on the table. By that way, i think is the best training for him, as he is expected to be a domestique and not a leader, so more RES should be important

4.100 67787361727376535471717258
CRISTIAN RODRIGUEZ
Cristian is the other talent who is on a full-contract. His training can go in only one way, the hilly training, which should benefit him the best, as currently his best stat is HIL. No other trainings will be considered, as the hilly training is the one who maximise his abilities

ALVARO CUADROS
The 22-yo is the first of our stagiares, and he must earn himself a contract for next year in the few races that he will take part starting from August. He should max as a good lead-out men for sprints, so he has two possible trainings; the "normal" sprint, and the track-sprint one.

XABIER SAN SEBASTIAN
The last one of our "talents" and the second stagiare is this Basque rider.

He should be a good asset for a hypothetical future TTT roster, so the timetrial training is the only logical choice

knockout
For Roson (very nice talent!) I'd prefer the second version. It will turn him into a strong domestique on two terrains which is an important asset that cannot be undervalued. Also the extra accelerations offers a little extra bonus when he goes for KoMs.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Have to agree with knockout - higher acceleration and much higher hill stats is much better for him and also gives him second best rec - whilst res and sta aren't overly high that way it's not the end of the world

@Knockout, @Jandal As I said that's my prefered training right now, but obviously until I have to make a decision I might change my point of view and go with the training that you have suggested.

I think that as a domestique it would be better to have higher RES so he could last longer protecting the leader, but i see also the advantages of the second training

PARTNERSHIP WITH SUOMY
i.imgur.com/MCG1p4i.png
Repsol - Honda is glad to anounce their latest partnership with the helmet's Italian brand Suomy.

With 20 years of experience in motorcycle helmets making, they have decided to jump in the bicycle helmets market, and when searching for a helmets supplier, a deal was reached inmediately.

The deal is for just one year, but there is a clause of a one-year extension which needs to be accepted by both parts

INTERVIEW WITH RAFAEL VALLS
Yesterday, in Spanish main sport newspaper, MARCA, an interview with our team leader, Rafael Valls, was published in where he talks about the upcoming season, his move to Repsol - Honda and his future ambitions

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Romandie/MG15_Romandie_4_007.jpg

Rafa's only MG win in his career, in Romandie's stage 4 two years ago

Journalist: Hi Rafa, thank you for welcoming me. Let's start. You are the team leader of the new Spanish team, Repsol - Honda. Is this the oportunity that you were looking for?

Rafa Valls: Yes, this is exactly what i was looking for. Although in Euskaltel I had leadership in a higher division, I was never in position to win anything, so for me it's a good move. I'll have the chance to fight for the win in all the races i'll race this season

J: You know that all goals of your team relies in you, doesn't that put you a big pressure in your shoulders?

R.V.: Well, you always have pressure in cycling. No manager wants you to under-achieve. Obviously, having to win my first race with the team won't be easy, but the other goals should be "easily" achievable, as i can't see 5 climbers being able to beat me in mountains

J: Talking about your possible rivals, who do you see as the other big climbers in CT?

R.V.: Eastman will be clearly my biggest rival. He is better in TT, and maybe a bit better in pure climbing, but i'm better in hills and have better back-ups. It will be a great fight all season with him. Other big climbers should be Suaza, although he might suffer at the end of stage races, and when there's no big mountains. Italian's duo, Penasa and Cataldo should do it great, and I can't see any other climber who can be consistently in the fight all season, although I'm sure i'm missing someone who will be my nightmare this season.

J; It's obvious that you will take part in all 4 goals race for your team this season, but which will be the rest of your schedule?

R.V.: Yeah, i'll start my season in Venezuela, with Vuelta al Tachira. Then I'll go back to Europe to ride Giro del Trentino. My first part of the season conludes with Tour de Langkawi. Then I'll have a busy summer, with Costa Rican classic, my first outing to C1 races this season, before the last teams goals in Tour d'Andorra and Tour of Bulgaria.
To end I'll race the only C2 mountain classic, Colombian Venteaux, and another outing in C1 with Tour of East Java

J: So which are you real expectations for the season, in terms of wins and points?

R.V.: I expect to win at least one of the 5 CT stage races i'll take part, without slipping outside top 3-5 in any of them. In terms of total wins, 3-5 wins is what I can expect if things go like I expect. And points... it's more like a wild guess, but being close to the 500 points mark would be an out-standing season for me

J: Do you think that you have enough help in the mountains, or that you'll have problems with that in the future?

R.V.: I think I have a great support in the mountains. Both Hideto and Rafael will be strong domestiques who should be able to last until the key moments, and Damiano, who should be with me in some races can be a great helper when needed. I don't think I need a super-train

J: It has been a pleasure to talk with you. Hopefully we can talk again when you take your first win of the season

R.V: That would a pleasure for me

Nice interview with Mr Valls, and a good calendar has been set out for him. I would be very impressed if he tops 500 points this season, and would make him a challenger for the individual rankings standings overall.. If he surpasses his (v. expensive) wage/1000 (i.e. 375 points), I think that would be a more than reasonable season for him. Previous seasons 500 would be a reasonable expectation, the competition is tougher this year imo, hence a number of riders will 'keep getting in each others way' so to speak. Definitely one of the top 'new' teams, with potential to trouble the top 10 team rankings in CT this season, although a lot hangs on Valls. If Rafael's wage can be brought more in line with his overall value for next season, an excellent basis for promotion or even title tilt in 2018. Smile

Well, close to 500 i'll consider everything over 400 Pfft And something around 400 i think is reasonable, and i'll be happy with that.
Valls' signing was in the line of achieving all my goals for the season, so i could put myself in a great situation for 2018 season, with a big leader and lot of margin to improve
