Renewals and transfer availability
An atmosphere of mixed emotions was felt by the media waiting outside of the Puma HQ after the most dreaded day of the season passed one more time in Herzogenaurach.
A clearly not entirely happy, but yet relieved manager made several statements regarding the future of Team Puma - SAP.
A quick glance at the new wages show that both Kelderman and German wunderkind Herklotz are aware of their worth to the team in the past and especially in the future, and we did not take any risks in order to secure their signatures for another season. Herklotz obviously made significant progress in the off-season and should still be very much worth the money.
The same goes for Arnaud Demare, who got compensated for bringing the team's first national champion jersey to the peloton in 2017.
On the other hand, some money was able to be saved on the contracts of Blythe, Ciolek, Daniel and Arndt.
Those measures were unable to offset the wage increases however, and adding to that is the big bunch of valuable domestiques who know their roles in the team are appreciated and/or improved since last year and therefore asked for slight increases.
Last but not least, we want to thank Victor Shishelov for his efforts in his tenure in Team Puma - SAP. We were always happy to have his abilities at our disposal, but both sides agreed that he deserves more opportunities than he would get here.
Since we did not want to hinder his chances to find a new suitable team, we agreed to terminate his contract.
In the end, those values amount to a total wage that exceeds the PT salary cap, which results in a transfer fine but more importantly, the availability of several good riders in the upcoming transfer season.
Gerald Ciolek and Maxime Daniel are the big names that are facing an uncertain future, both are riders who can lead a team in any division and make the difference between an mediocre season and a spot in the media headlines.
Furthermore, Jocelyn Bar, Patrick Bercz and Johannes Heider are cheap-but-effective riders that may join your team for a reasonable transfer fee this season. All of them certainly sport a wage that cannot be achieved in the FA frenzy, and are very valuable as domestiques in the upper divisions or outright leaders in CT.
Obviously we also encourage inquiries into all riders indicated as possible or unlikely to leave the team. Riders we gave the "no" tag are not entirely off the charts either, provided the situation and the offer are right.

I count 8 better TTers in your team. What for?

#1 He's not gone yet

Just because it's him. I've been following his RL career for a while now.

Looking at the riders and composition of the team, it's a very likeable one, like it has always been, really. Looking forward to see how you navigate in transfer season, seeing that you're slightly above the wage cap and probably would very much like to bring in some money to use on training. |

Understandable, but his skillset is way too valuable especially on 50k wage. We rather need more TTers than fewer anyway.

I'm looking forward to your PMs

Thank you very much, and I do expect it to be rather boring this time around with only a few moves in and out. But who knows?

After a very successful 2016 season, transfers were in all likelyhood going to be a rather quiet affair for Team Puma - SAP, and indeed there were only 5 moves total being made by the team.
We bid farewell to three very appreciated riders that we wish the best of luck in the future.
Maxime Daniel was signed in our first PT season and loaned out in his first two years with the team to help with his development. He made sure that would pay off by surprisingly winning Gent-Wevelgem in 2015 ahead of legendary Tom Boonen and went on to provide valuable points last season in our fight for a Top 5 in the highest division.
We struck a good deal with SPAR who will provide him with the perfect environment to win many cobbled races in PCT and maybe even PT again soon.
Jocelyn Bar has been with Puma ever since the team was founded, which made him one of only 4 riders to be with us along the whole way.
We signed him for a very small fee in 2012 and have been exceptionally satisfied with his performances ever since, having led Bennati and Ciolek to many sprint wins and podiums.
However, we had to decide that our sprinting depth was a bit too much after a 2016 season in which Puma trains have been a rare sighting, and we have found a great new home for Bar in our friends at In-n-Out who have given many Puma riders chances to ride for themselves in the past.
Judging from post-transfers buzz, they are a big favorite to promote from CT and we hope Jocelyn can help them achieve that, which would be the 3rd promotion campaign he'd be a part of.
Going the same way as Bar in a double-deal with In-n-Out is Patrick Bercz. Signed in 2014, he's been a faithful domestique and occasional train element wherever needed.
We do feel he deserves a slightly bigger role in a team, and due to his chemistry with Bar we are happy that both can support Marco Haller in the upcoming season.
Only two new riders were greeted at the Team Puma - SAP headquarters last week due to cap space limitations, but both of them were our top targets for their respective roles.
Colin Stüssi joins us for 60k wage. The 24 year old will be a familiar sight in our lineups for the biggest races once he has gained some more experience.
Already being very well-rounded, he'll develop into a great stage racer who can provide support for his leader on the flats, in the mountains and in TTTs, a discipline we have historically lacked firepower in. His secondary stats will also be well above average, ensuring he'll be on top of his game at any time during a race.
| Colin Stüssi | 2.00 | Stage Racer |
Fl | Mo | Hi | TT | St | Rs | Rc | Co | Sp | Ac | Fi | DH | Pr | 70 | 71 | 69 | 69 | 73 | 69 | 72 | 55 | 63 | 65 | 64 | 69 | 63 | 71 | 77 | 73 | 75 | 77 | 73 | 78 | 55 | 63 | 66 | 65 | 69 | 69 |
Sean McKenna is our first stagiare signing since 2012, and a perfect fit for that role. He'll bolster our Irish contingent that we have started with Conor Dunne last season, and despite only having 15 race days this season, together with Avenir that'll allow him to exactly reach level 3.00.
We cannot promise him a contract for next season, but we see the potential of a great uphill domestique in him, and his great acceleration could see him challenging for many KoM jerseys.
| Sean McKenna | 2.46 | Climber |
Fl | Mo | Hi | TT | St | Rs | Rc | Co | Sp | Ac | Fi | DH | Pr | 69 | 69 | 69 | 62 | 67 | 69 | 68 | 61 | 64 | 71 | 67 | 69 | 63 | 70 | 75 | 75 | 62 | 68 | 72 | 72 | 61 | 64 | 77 | 73 | 70 | 63 |
All things combined, this means Team Puma - SAP will look like this in the 2017 ProTour season.

Our only stage race victory last season (or maybe even ever) has been upgraded to PT HC status this year. A brilliant Silvio Herklotz aged 22 took the yellow jersey early on and never lost the lead, stunning the cycling world.
With the route being identical, Herklotz will return much stronger to defend his title, but we also expect the startlist to increase in quality with more points to gain for teams. The pressure will be high either way considering the circumstances, so we figured we might as well aim for a repeat result.
A goal returning from 2016, where we messed up the strategy completely by sending both Ciolek and Demare, which resulted in neither of them being anywhere close to achieving it. We won't make the same mistake twice.
Adam Blythe took great 4th places in the velodrome in 2015 and 2016. We are confident he has the ability to go one spot higher and make the podium this time.
The second goal we kept from the last set of 5, this time not due to horribly failing it like MSR, but due to Dominik Nerz giving us exactly that GC position in the end.
With very limited TTing in this year's tough route, we might give Bongiorno full leadership in his home GT though and employ the German in other races.
Again we aim neither for the top nor to simply avoid the bottom, so we figured a Top 10 result in the PT standings would be quite a sensible goal. Obviously we gladly take any spot above that, but we see no reason to get sponsor expectations into the way of our riders' focus in all races and not just the four mentioned above.
| Arnaud Demare | | Sprinter? Puncheur? |
Fl | Mo | Hi | TT | St | Rs | Rc | Co | Sp | Ac | Fi | DH | Pr | 73 | 66 | 77 | 61 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 63 | 80 | 81 | 70 | 63 | 61 | | | ↓↓↓ | | | | | | | | | | | 73 | 66 | 79 | 61 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 63 | 80 | 81 | 70 | 63 | 61 |
It never was a surprise so this isn't a revelation: Arnaud Demare spent an excessive amount of time at our training facilities in the off-season to become an even more dangerous rider next season.
The decision wasn't an easy one, but together with Arnaud the staff decided to work on his punch uphill first instead of his top-end speed.
Gerald Ciolek will remain our main sprinter for another year, while Demare will try to be in the mix in the tougher stages and classics.
