Definitely not the best way to get off the start blocks, but that was to be expected with a team that has no strong time trialists and is led by someone who doesn't like prologues. Wink

L'Histoire du Jour
i.imgur.com/bUmgtbp.png
The pack kept control of things until the first intermediate sprint. Michael Matthews came ahead of Bryan Coquard and Niccolo Bonifazio to earn 20 points. Carlos Barbero was rewarded eight points for finishing in eighth.
i.imgur.com/5tSp4Y5.png
Afterwards, a breakaway duo battled for the first polka dot jersey. Sadly, Sebastian Henao got outsmarted by Gijs Van Hoecke (Sport Vlaanderen).
i.imgur.com/OAtZXW9.png
Marcel Kittel was the best of the lead sprinters at the second sprint. Once again eight green points went to our guy for the sprint, Carlos Barbero.
i.imgur.com/fmrqe50.png
As the duo out front were reeled in, our train approached Strasbourg city center in a good position. Although at its very back, we missed Barbero.
i.imgur.com/wIdi1Gq.png
The extremely close outcome was Nacer Bouhanni outsprinting Kittel on the line. Carlos could not make his way back to the fore, but Manu gave both Uruguay and the team their first Tour de France top 10 stage finish.

Stage 3/21, 218.7 kms
i.imgur.com/zpoKsT6.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/zYXGdIc.png
A group of 4 riders escaped on the first two climbs. Gonçalves could not keep up with the pace set by Van Keirsbulck, Roux, Drucker and Ligthart. Ligthart had taken 3 points, a provisional move into the mountain jersey.
i.imgur.com/LlqTnbk.png
Roux was the one to deny him that jersey by winning the 3rd KoM sprint. In the pack, Kittel was the best main sprinter at the intermediates. Pello dragged the bunch over the last 2 bumps when the breakaway was over. Ruben wasn't taking any chances, staying close to the front of the pack.
i.imgur.com/99yAu2p.png
Nearing the red kite, Dimension Data's train took the upper hand. Its last car, however, was Caleb Ewan. On the left-hand side of the road, Ruben tried to perform a leadout for Pello, Carlos was sitting way too far back.
i.imgur.com/pHsEq7I.png
The first to be caught by the finish camera was Nacer Bouhanni, who had created a promising gap already. Behind him, Degenkolb was try to bring Marcel Kittel closer to the man who'd already outsprinted him yesterday.
i.imgur.com/ppwcgRr.png
The French champion maintained his effort and Kittel's strong kick stayed away. Coquard made it a 1-2 for the French, Kittel's 3rd was sufficient to force Michael Matthews out of the Maillot Vert. Ruben concluded in 11th.

Stage 4/21, 214.7 kms
i.imgur.com/0uGkVnX.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/Gl32Bm5.png
Today's break of the day was a trio formed by David Helling, Pim Ligthart and Ian Stannard; Ligthart was best placed to take over the KOM jersey.
i.imgur.com/bHByKs1.png
However, it was a strong Stannard who picked up more points before the peloton caught them. Bryan Coquard won the last intermediate sprint, an action that would allow him to force Marcel Kittel out of the green jersey.
i.imgur.com/RzXEl9I.png
The long awaited attack from a vast bunch came on la Côte de Trintelen. Poels' acceleration on the penultimate climb caused splits but no GC men were caught behind. The Cauberg ascent didn't bring any big gaps either.
i.imgur.com/D60d0vD.png
Moreno Hofland, who had left a very strong impression on the hills, didn't find John Degenkolb in his wheel, so he started sprinting himself. Ruben was our sole man still at the front in the last home stretch in Valkenburg.
i.imgur.com/UpMb9ax.png
Hofland took a clear maiden GT victory while Kelderman, Boom and Poels made it an entirely Dutch top 4. Ruben finished in 6th; Adrien Costa lost over 6', his best young rider jersey went to Trek - Segafredo's Krigbaum.

Stage 5/21, 207.7 kms
i.imgur.com/cETfTHL.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/8Uvx2p5.png
Ian Stannard (QST) and Daniel Ealton (BMC) built up a gap after the first climb. The Brit had failed to pick up any points there, while Ligthart had. As Stannard could not make up for that on the next, this meant no points for him this time. Plus renouncing the polka dot kit for tomorrow's stage.
i.imgur.com/roszTuI.png
Omar bridged a five minute gap to join the leaders but the bunch always kept them within reach. As the escapees were about to get caught with 8 kilometers left, Ian Stannard attacked his 2 tired breakaway companions.
i.imgur.com/27RpIVs.png
While Stannard tried to hold on to a decreasing gap, our sprint train was split when a Movistar rider made Martínez and Barbero lose contact. At the left Fabio Felline and green jersey Bryan Coquard made an early gap.
i.imgur.com/arqnx9u.png
Coquard's advantage did not allow anyone to come back as soon as he'd overtaken Stannard. Sagan and Ewan took 2nd and 3rd. Our top finisher after a difficult sprint was Martínez, who finished just inside the top 20.

Stage 6/21, 222.9 kms
i.imgur.com/QY2lzc5.png

Short Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/jsDn8TN.png
A few stronger groups had been brought back by Tinkoff when four riders were allowed some space. That four consisted of Jempy Drucker, Wesley Kreder, Petr Vakoc and Shiki Kuroeda. None of them were jersey threats.
i.imgur.com/BBNALzT.png
The break never stood a chance and was caught on the local laps. Carlos opted for a different strategy this time and hopped on the wheel of Bryan Coquard. Things didn't look too bad until Sagan took his turn. From then on everything went too fast for Carlos; he quickly started to lose places.
i.imgur.com/RW4goov.png
Keeping the others behind him was no issue for Coquard, who took a 2nd stage win. Kittel and Bouhanni concluded on the podium, Carlos in 13th.
