Groupe BPCE to sponsor new French Pro Cycling Team for the 2016 Season
Date: November 15, 2015
Category: French Cycling
Groupe BPCE, France's second largest banking group, have been announced as the lead sponsor of a new French Pro Cycling Team which the investment group promise will be ready to launch in time for the start of the 2016 season. The shock announcement has seemingly come out of nowhere, but team management insist negotiations have been ongoing since the end of the 2015 Tour De France.
A spokesperson for Groupe BPCE made the following statement: “The conclusion of the 2015 Tour marked 20 years since the last home winner of our great event. Looking at the French teams currently operating in the sport, there doesn't appear to be a clear plan to resolve this. We find this unacceptable. Our nation has long held an esteemed position within the sport of cycling, but in recent years this has come under threat due to a combination of mismanagement, scandal and under performance. This is an undertaking of national pride. The foundation of Team BPCE-Natixis aims to restore our nations historical place in the sport, and ultimately aims to produce the next home Tour De France winner within the next five years!”
Already the major sponsor of the French Olympic Team, Groupe BPCE are said to have been inspired by the success of the partnership between Team Sky and the British Cycling. In 2009 Team Sky formed with a similar aim of producing the first British Tour De France winner, and the project proved wildly successful with first Bradley Wiggins becoming the first British winner in 2012 and later Chris Froome adding two more titles in 2013 and earlier this year in 2015.
BPCE-Natixis have told CyclingNews.com that the reason for the delay in the team announcement was due to negotiations between Groupe BPCE and the UCI to try and secure the team a spot on the prestigious UCI Pro Tour. While negotiations ultimately proved unsuccessful due to the time scales involved, BPCE-Nataxis are not letting that discourage them.
“The time scale has been pushed back, but we still believe the project will ultimately be successful. We are investing heavily in the team, and despite only having a short recruitment phase we believe we have enough time to be ready for the 2017 season, and we still hope to achieve promotion to the Pro Tour at the first time of asking.”
The team will be competing in the Continental Pro Tour, a level under the UCI World Tour, but with most of the teams initial major targets already under contract with other teams for the 2016 season, Team BPCE face a huge task if they are to assemble a team capable of being competitive. Directeur Sportif, Alexandre DuBois, has promised a competitive squad with a “French core” will be assembled in time, with the teams primary aim being to develop home talent. This has prompted news outlets to link every French rider currently out of contract with the new team. One thing is for sure: Team BPCE-Nataxis will be very busy over the next few weeks a they prepare for their inaugural season |

BPCE-NATIXIS announce first signings on Tour De France quest
Date: December 12, 2015
Category: French Cycling
Spoiler BPCE-Natixis yesterday made a statement of intent as they revealed the teams first signings for the 2016 seasons. The team revealed four signings, with the stand our being the confirmation that 25 year old sprinter Adrien Petit would be leading the team for the 2016 season.
25 year old Petit has been widely rumoured over the past few weeks to be signing for fellow French Pro Continental outfit Direct Energie for the 2016 season. The fact that BPCE-Natixis were able to swoop in and convince the highly rated French sprinter to sign is a real coup for the new team, and will go some way to allaying the doubts of their critics. BPCE-Nataxis will be hoping that Petit can build on some solid form in the 2015 season, which included an impressive win at the Tro-Bro Leon, following his split from former team Cofidis.
At yesterdays press conference, Directeur Sportif Alexandre DuBois confirmed that Petit will be handed a leadership role within the team. “Adrien is exactly the kind of rider we wanted to bring in to this project. He's young, hungry and has proved that he can win races at the highest level. Over the past few weeks there has been some scepticism about what we're trying to do here, with questions being raised over whether we have time to put together a competitive squad in two months. Today's announcements should put any doubts to bed!”
DuBois has stated he aims to have a squad of around 20 riders ready for the start of the 2016 season, and tells CyclingNews.com that he has been in contact with dozens of French riders. While he admits to having missed out on some major targets due to the delay in the project, he remains bullish that he can assemble a competitive squad of French riders by the deadline. He points to the signing of Adrien Petit as proof of the drawing power of the team.
A big, powerful sprinter, Petit may be able to offer BPCE-Natixis wins, but he is not the next French Tour de France hope the team is searching for. DuBois admits that this search is still ongoing. “We have identified a few prospects, but most are already tied up with other teams and are off limits for now. This was always a five year project, so we have time to scout and negotiate to build our perfect team. Our main aim for this year is simple: Promotion to the World Tour.”
While Petit has taken the headlines, fellow additions Royane Bouhanni, John Gadret and Steve Chainel, should not be ignored.
Highly rated Royane Bouhanni rode as a stagiare for Cofidis for parts of the 2015 season, and was widely expected to join the French team for the 2016 season. However, much like Petit, BPCE-Natixis were able to lure the young rider away from a fellow French Continental Pro outfit and add the exciting young talent to their roster.
John Gadret and Steve Chainel will bring World Tour experience to what is likely to be a young squad. Gadret, 36, is a climber with a decades experience at the top level. After eight seasons at French World Tour team AG2R, Gadret has spent the past two seasons riding for Movistar. Released at the end of the 2015 season, Gadret was one of the first names linked to BPCE-Natixis following the teams announcement last month.
Steve Chainel is another hugely experienced rider, who has had spells with almost every professional French cycling team in the last decade. Signing for Bbox Bouyges Telecom in 2009, Chainel went on to have spells at FDJeux, AG2R and Cofidis. |

I absolutely love the beginnings of this project! Very well-thought sigings, guess we might have a lot of fun following this story and the build up of a new french cycling force. I might sense a wild Barguil incoming

@Shonak - Haha thanks! After watching this years Tour I got the urge to jump back into PCM Bardet and Barguil in particular has been incredible to watch this year, and in part inspired this project.
@Aquarius - Thank you for replying! I'm trying to keep some realism to the signings (who would be available at the time, no 'all-star squad' etc.), but I think I've assembled quite a competitive squad (roster will be posted shortly). While I don't think we'll be winning the tour year one, I think it's certainly doable within a few seasons if we can attract the right guys!
(edit) @Croatia14 - Thank you so much! I would absolutely LOVE to get Barguil involved at some point in this story (his riding at this years e Tour has been incredible!), but he's currently tied up at Giant-Alpecin in the game. I have a shortlist of guys I will be going in high for when I hit the Pro-Tour, so hopefully they'll all be making an appearance in coming seasons!
Thanks to everyone else who has taken the time to read this so far! I know the posts have been a little wordy, but I wanted to build a backstory rather than jumping straight in. Hopefully you enjoy the story!

BPCE-NATIXIS Cycling Team Roster - Season 2016
Introductions written by Directeur Sprtif, Alexandre DuBois
Spoiler
Team Leaders
Adrien Petit
Age: 25 Specialisation: Northern Classics
One of French cyclings great young hopes! A powerful sprinter, signing Adrien was a huge coup for BPCE-Natixis. Petit will be team leader for the 2016 season. Strong over the cobbles as well as the flat, Adrien will be key for the early season classics and the team will be looking to him to secure early victories and get the team off to a flying start. Formerly of Cofidis, BPCE-Natixis will be hoping Petit can continue the form that saw him win the 2015 Tro-Bro Leon.
Romain Sicard
Age: 28 Specialisation: Stage Races
Romain was a man we were really happy to get hold of. Formerly of Euskaltel-Euskadi, Romain has spent the past 2 seasons racing for Team Europcar. I first made contact with Romain back in September, when Team Europcar were having Sponsorship issues and got him on board with the project. A strong climber, Romain can also time trial well and will lead us in stage races throughout the season.
Steve Chainel
Age: 32 Specialisation: Northern Classics
Steve brings a wealth of experience to the team, entering his 10th season as a pro. Steve has ridden for almost every professional French cycling team in the last decade. Signing for Bbox Bouyges Telecom in 2009, Chainel went on to have spells at FDJeux, AG2R and Cofidis. Most at home on the cobbles, Steve will be a force for us in the early season classics.
Yannick Martinez
Age: 27 Specialisation: Sprinter
Yannick is a good sprinter, who has some good results under his belt – including a 3rd place finish at the Tour de la Somme. Amid questions around the future of Team Europcar (now Direct Energie) at the back end of the 2015 season, we were able to convince Yannick to joing our venture. Yannick's big strength as a sprinter is that he is also able to get over the hills, which makes him a good option for us in the hilly classics.
John Gadret
Age: 36 Specialisation: Climber
John is a hugely experienced climber, with over a decades experience at the very top of our sport. John rode eight seasons with French team AG2R, before moving to Movistar in 2014. His experience will prove invaluable for our younger riders, and his climbing skills will prove extremely useful to the team in the mountains.

BPCE-NATIXIS confirmed for Tour De France 2016
Date: January 24, 2016
Category: Tour De France; French Cycling
Spoiler Wild Cards for the Tour De France 2016 were announced this morning, with French teams dominating the selection. Cofidis, Direct Energie, Fortuneo-Vital Concept, and BPCE-Natixis were all confirmed for this years event. It is rare for all four wild card spots to be offered to French teams, but the organisers are daid to be hoping that the home teams will inject a sense of excitement and unpredicatability into this years event as they all chase the glory of a stage vicory at the teams home Grand Tour.
The choice of Team BPCE-Natixis has been the most talked about among many observers, with the team having been announced less than two months ago and yet to compete in a professional race. Backed by the nations second largest banking group, there are rumblings among some of the teams detractors that money has played a role in their inclusion.
However, BPCE-Natixis Direteur Sportif Alexandre DuBois has not let this dampen his excitement at the announcement. “We have stated from the outset that our ultimate goal for this project is to produce a French winner of le Tour within the next five years. For our young guys to gain experience riding the event this year will be a huge step in their development.”
When asked whether he thought it was fair on foreign teams that four French teams were handed the wild card spots this year, Du Bois commented that “having more home teams in le Tour can only be good for French cycling.”
Team BPCE-Natixis make their racing debut in the Grand Prix Cycliste le Marseillaise on 31st January. |

@Croatia14 - Glad you're enjoying the build up posts, I wan't sure if I was over indulging! Like you say it is no real surprise that it was all French wild cards, but it worked out well for the story.

Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise (1.1)
Marseilles, 138.9 km Race Strategy:
After only a few short months of preparation, Marseilles would be the stage on which Team BPCE-Natixis would make our bow. A hilly one day classic, we chose Yannick Martinez as Team Leader for our first race. We believed the race would be decided with a bunch sprint, so were fielding two sprinters in Martinez and Royane Bouhanni. However, a large hill just over halfway through the stage may prove too much for Bouhanni to stay attached to the peleton, so we decided to hedge our bets. Julien El-Flares and Anthony Delaplace were given license to attack and try to get into any breakaway that formed. The Days Action:
The race opened with an attack almost from the line, which caught out both El-Flares and Delaplace as both men were too far down the peleton to respond. This attack eventually formed into a six man breakaway that was allowed to get away. The breakaway was able to build their lead to almost 7 minutes at one stage, but as the slopes began to get tougher the peleton began to reel them in.
As the stage rolled on, the favourites teams moved to the front and really began to eat into the breakaways gap. The breakaway was eventually reeled in by a joint effort with around 6km left in the race. However once the catch had succeeded, the teams of the big favourites began to look at each other and the pace dropped. This drop in pace moved Julien El-Flares to the front of the bunch, and sensing a lull in the pace Julien launched an opportunistic attack with around 5km to go! Amazingly none of the favourites teams took up the chase, as they all continued to look at each other, allowing El-Flares to build a gap. The teams finally got themselves organised with around 2km to go, but El-Flares already had a lead of 50' at that point! Could he hold on? Amazingly Julien El-Flares was able to hold on for an incredible victory, as he crossed the line alone 40 seconds ahead of the peleton – securing a superb debut victory for Team BPCE-Natixis!
Despite the huge positive of El-Flares' incredible solo victory, it was not all good news for the team. Despite looking well placed a few km out, the sprint went very wrong for Martinez and Bouhanni. Martinez found himself boxed in with nowhere to go 1km out, and Bouhanni was unable even to kick around Romain Bacon who had bought him into position for the sprint. We will put this one down to lack of training and early season form, but there is certainly a lot of work to be done by our sprint train! However today belonged to Julien El-Flares, as he clinched the very first victory in the short history of our team! Congratulations Julien! Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise

Well, I would advise you to find your own style The layout is an almost exact copy of Kiserlovski01's Caja Rural story, and while it's completely fine to take elements from other stories you enjoy, this takes it a bit too far imo. Take some inspiration, but make it your own thing. The addition of the results of each of your team's riders is a good start.
