I really don't get this. I usually by default put all my riders on 99- maintain position.
As I understand it this means they will go to 99 effort to maintain position in the Peloton. But if the peloton is going slow it's not like they are using 99 effort.
I always understood it as a maximum- so there is no harm in maxing it out if you want to do your best to stay in a group.
If I have a poor climber on mountain I might drop his effort because there is no point in trying to keep up.
But if my Leader is in the first few on a Mountain and I don't want to attack or ride away why wouldn't I just put him on 99?
I have always played that way but I see experienced talking about the Dot. I know it can be useful for riding away but should I be consistently tweaking it? |

Because by using maintain position on 99 you spend more energy than by tweaking and paying close attention to the dot.

More energy doing what? Super maintaining position? |

Yeah, it simply works like that - especially uphill. If you maintain position on 99 you go as fast as whoever is relaying, taking you to the first positions of the group, but that's not really necessary when you can just go at your own pace and indirectly follow any attacks and changes of pace by increasing the dot.

Thanks it still seems a leap from logic to me though"! |

When you use maintain at a high level, your rider will follow attacks, etc. and especially uphill, you can completely wear your rider down by following all attacks in that way.
In previous editions, if you had maintain over 70 on flat stages and on maintain, your rider would always try to follow attacks until they effectively broke away from the peloton and it could take the first 5-10% of your energy. If you just put it to 70, you could sit at the front, he'd still try to follow early on, but since they ride so much faster, he'd drop it faster and not expend much energy. |

I used dot in route vlaanderen in cobble and hill sections. Thanks to the dot i always stayed in touch with the main favourites and arrived 8th only because Naesen has bad sprint skills compared to sagan kristoff and the other top riders. Very satisfied i'm learning |

Exactly, and if you increased your effort on cobbled sections you could've lifted the pace and tried to drop other riders before the sprint. Hard to pull off, but possible.
