A very wise decision to not set the bar too high this season. Just go with the flow and see what happens. Good start already!

Tamijo
Fine early season start, with a solid top 5.

And the start just got better!

February

The first of two races in February is in Murcia. This is followed by the Tour of Oman at the end of the month.

Vuelta Ciclista a la Region de Murcia

Valentine's Day!! The day of love! But there will be no love lost at the end when it comes down to the race win. I was given a free role with van Dingenen the assigned leader. Interestingly, the bookies had placed me as one of the top favourites. With 30 km to go, I took advantage of a lull in the pack to go after the break. I got away, but so did a couple others, including Shulga. I had support and I was happy to lessen the pace. WIth 25 km to go, the group had swelled to around 30 riders and there was only one rider in the break. The break was caught with 10 km to go. We came to the front immediately afterwards to push the pace. With 2.5 km to go, and van Dingenen not in our group, my teammates dropped off the pace and I attacked. I kept the pace high, and despite the chase being being red hot, they couldn't catch me. I won!! My first victory in a one day race.

Tour of Oman

Just three days after Murcia, and stil basking in its glory, I lined up to start the Tour of Oman as leader of Lotto.

Stage 1 saw three of my teammates being tagged among the favourites. van Avermaet retired halfway through the stage, the consequences of a fall early on. I stayed out of trouble and the stage came down to a bunch sprint. Theuns and van Staeyen finished 7th and 8th for us, respectively.

Stage 2

i.imgur.com/UzdCXJl.jpg

I stayed in the pack again. Theuns fell midway through the stage and never recovered back to the peloton. I attacked at the base of the climb to the finish, with just 5 km to go. I was caught and beaten by Alaphilippe, so close to a stage win! I held off the rest of the pack. There should have been some time differences but none were awarded by the jury. I was happy with the 2nd place and the fact that I was now in 4th place in the GC.

Stage 3 was tougher than it appears in the profile. I struggled to keep pace with the peloton and just about managed to hang on to the tail of the pack. I dropped a place in the GC, but avoided any major damage.

(I love this pic of me on Stage 3 with the White Jersey)

I was considered among the favourites on Stage 4. I stayed in the pack initially. Four riders, including me, attacked out of the peloton at the base of the climb. Barguil and Alaphilippe were out ahead, followed by Atapuma and then me. Tao Geoghegan Hart attacked next, caugth and passed both me and Atapuma. I was caught and dropped by two more riders and finished 7th on the stage and moved down to 8th in the GC.

Stage 5

i.imgur.com/96tYwhL.jpg

Billed to be a decisive stage and it didn't disappoint. A group of 10 riders, all GC contenders, went away on the base of the second climb. I caught back to them with the help of furios chasing by my teammates. The team dropped off soon after and I saw myself being distanced again. Tao Geoghegan Hart was also dropped. I teamed up with him, and soon we clawed ourselves back again. Tao was fried, while I attacked at the top of the climb. I went away with Barguil and Alaphilippe, being chased by four others. The two groups merged on the desecnt, but soon it split up again. This time, I was in the lead group of four with Alaphilippe, Oomen and McCarthy. I was dropped on the flat before the third climb. Alaphilippe was also dropped on the climb, and I managed to pip him to the line for 3rd place. I moved up to 3rd in the GC too!

Stage 6 fell on my birthday! I stayed in the pack throughout as MTN, Stella Artois and my teammates did most of the work chasing down the eleven man break. They could not catch the break. I attacked on top of the last small climb and gained time on all GC contenders besides the top two, who were alert and followed my attack will the finish.

Another good race to start the season. Another U25s classification win, which has almost became par for the course now. The course wasn't the easiest and I think I did well to finish on the podium here. I was really close to another stage win on Stage 2, but it wasn't to be. Once again, it remains to be seen if I can take my early season form into the business end of the season.

Tamijo
Good podium in a race that did not suite a stage racer that well.

We'll there were quite a few climbs, so that did help my case. I'm better at medium hills anyway with my current progress level.

March

Another two race month in March. The first, and second, World Tour race on my schedule.

Paris - Nice

Back in Europe, I headed off to France in what was the first step in my preparation for the Giro. As expected, a relatively strong field turned up. Would I be able to keep up my good form?

Stage 1 was a short prologue. I ended up 24th, losing 36 seconds to stage winner Dumoulin. Betancur was four seconds slower than me.

Stage 2 was flat and I stayed safely in the pack. Theuns finished 6th for us.

Stage 3 was a carbon copy of the last in terms of the profile, my role and Theuns's finishing position!

Stage 4 started and ended with horrible weather. Another mostly flat stage so little interest among the GC contenders. Theuns finished 10th.

Stage 5 again saw horrible weather at the start. Both Betancur and I were among the favourites. At the base of the last climb, Bardet attacked, while the rest of us chased. When a gap built up, Barguil, Dan Martin and I attacked. I couldn't keep up with them, Simon Yates went past and I fell back to the pack. Betancur was pacing me. I clawed my way back to Martin and finished 7th, losing some time. I went up to 9th in the GC.

I attacked on top of the last climb on Stage 6, having stayed in the pack till then. I had a 20 second lead with 7 km to go, but couldn't hang on till the end. I finished in the pack, with the rest of the GC favourites.

Stage 7

i.imgur.com/cE32pV2.jpg

Betancur fell early but recovered back soon enough. I attacked at the top of the last climb. I was caught on the descent by a group of 14 and soon we caught the break too. Barguil and Dan Martin then attacked. Only the former was able to get some time on his rivals, while Martin was caught. I finished in a group of 14 riders, in 7th place on the stage and moved up to 8th in the GC.

Stage 8 was an ITT and I was one of the favourites. I didn't exactly live up to that billing, finishing 13th on the stage, but lost only 29 seconds to stage winner Simon Yates. I did move up a place in the GC to end up 7th.

Another top 10 finish in a race which didn't offer a lot of chances to attack the GC leaders. I was one step behind the top 3 throughout and never really challenged for the win. The next seven were separated by less than a minute and we could've finished in any order. In the end, I was happy with my top 10 and another U25 classification win.

A more than solid start to the year! Already looking forward to the upcoming Giro. Smile

So am I. I've been pacing myself in the early season to prevent the tiredness which creeps in later. Hopefully this works!

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

Back to sunny Spain after a month and a half away. My last visit to this country resulted in a win, at Murcia. Will this race prove equally lucky? The competition will be fierce once again as the GC specialists have well and truly started their season by now.

Stage 1 started with Van Garderen joining the break! This was not something anyone had been expecting. I stayed in the pack with a ring-side seat to the collective shock in the peloton. Soon, everyone settled down and the chase was on. The lead was reduced gradually. At 35 km to go, Robert Power attacked out of the pack and joined what was left of the break - van Garderen and Julien Simon. The break was finally caught on the last climb. The peloton had shed some stragglers but were still a large bunch. Diego Ulissi's late attack defied the bunch and got him the stage win. The sprinters were left to rue a missed opportunity.

Stage 2 saw a long chase of the breakaway. On the second, and last climb of the day, I found myself in the third group on the road. Out ahead was the break followed by a two man attack of Dan Martin and Tao Goeghegan Hart. The break didn't survive but the other two did, giving Martin the lead in the GC. Betancur finished 4th while I managed 6th place. I was up to 10th in the GC.

I attempted to join the break on Stage 3, but was always going to be unlikely. Both the break and peloton kept shrinking as we reached the second climb. The break was down to just two riders on the third climb. Adam Yates attacked 1 km from the top of the climb but the peloton caught him and the break on the descent. I got dropped in the undulating finish by half a dozen riders. I did finish 10th, but lost time in the GC race.

Stage 4 started slow for the peloton. I attacked on top of the second climb and was followed by Kruijswijk and Martin. We were caught on the descent. The group was down to about twenty riders on the last climb. Aru mounted a late attack and won the stage. I lost some seconds again.

Stage 5

Bad weather greeted us on this important stage. On top of the second climb, a lone break held fort ahead of a four man group - Me, Aru, Dan and Ulissi). Me and Ulissi were dropped by Aru and Martin. We got passed by Eiking with 10 km to go. I took advantage of the flats at the end to catch up to the others. I finished 5th. And that was my position in the GC after this stage.

Stage 6 was without incident till three of my teammates was involved in a late crash, along with others. Zakarin and Eiking were involved too but they recovered. The stage was decided in a bunch sprint.

(That's me on Stage 6)

Stage 7

i.imgur.com/jLeOv2a.jpg

I attacked on top of the third climb, countered by only Landa. We were caught with 15 km to go. Aru attacked on the last climb and broke clear, not to be caught. I finished in the next group of around twenty riders.

Mr. Consistent, that's what you can call me! Another solid result, without being exceptional. Another U25s win and a high placing in the KOM classification. Strangely, none of the races so far this season have had a really high mountain stage, or have the team been keeping me away from those?

Ripley
Very good and consistent results. Maybe more of an advantage currently to not face high mountain stages.

Aquarius97
Top7 + both U25 jerseys in 2 WT stage races is really good. Even more if we remember that he will be peaking in 1,5 months, for the Giro

@Ripley: Thanks Smile. Looking at the schedule and the profiles, I think I'll be tackling the really high mountains only in the GTs this season. Interesting scheduling from the team I must say...

@Aquarius: Thanks again Smile. Concentrating more on higher placings in the GTs now. So controlling my instincts somewhat in the early season. Hopefully, this plan works out.

Seems like Sinha is turning into a specialist in Hilly stage races and classics, like a type Valverde rider

April

Amidst growing murmurs likening my racing style to the legendary Alejandro Valverde, I quietly approached April, trying to stay away from the limelight.

Was I flattered with the comparison? Absolutely! Valverde is my cycling idol. He is the guy I used to follow races for. In my childhood, the only race shown live on TV was the Tour de France. In the age of slow internet speeds and no interest in cycling from the media in my country, it took a lot of effort to keep up with this man's exploits. I was shattered when he was handed the two year ban for his role in Operation Puerto. I still have my reservations against the verdict, but will not go as far to say he was totally innocent. But then, cycling is a murky world and I can't say I haven't received such overtures in the past. With a strong management backing everywhere I've been, I have kept a clean slate throughout. I was overjoyed when Valverde came back and he continued as if he never left. His recent retirement was an emotional event for me, having got the chance to ride in the same peloton with him in a handful of races.

My build-up to the Giro d'Italia includes two of the three Ardennes classics. I was quick to dismiss any comparisons with my idol everytime the media quizzed me on the topic. Personally, I don't think I come even close to him in the classics. I have not achieved anything in the Ardennes yet. Moreover, my targets from the beginning of the career have always been the Grand Tours. I did not want to lose focus of my target. Did I want to impress my idol in the Ardennes classics? Sure. But I never set out to be the next Valverde.

Amstel Gold Race

Nairo, Betancur and I were all starting this race. Nairo was the team leader and one the favourites for the win. Me and Betancur were both given a free role. We set the pace through most of the race, even I helped with the same in the middle stages. As in most of the past Ardennes races, I missed the decisive break and was out of contention with about 15 km to go. The favourites started attacking each other. When the dust settled, it was down to four riders to fight it out for the finish. Alaphilippe used his sprinting abilities to claim the win. Lotto's best was Quintana in 21st.

Liege - Bastogne - Liege

No Betancur here as Nairo and my roles remained the same. The rest of the team was relatively weak after a couple of minor injuries earlier in the week. I was dropped for a bit from the pack halfway through the race but made it back soon enough. 17 riders went away with 25 kilometers to go. I was once again in the peloton with attackers split into three groups up ahead. Nairo found himself in the second group. With 12 kilometers to go, there were three riders leading in solo rides with a 15 man group chasing. I was in the fifth group on the road, chasing a lost cause. I finished mid-pack while Nairo lost his way at the end to barely manage a top 20.

I think these results show that I'm nowhere near ready to take up Valverde's mantle. I hadn't prepared to peak in these races and my performance reflected the same. I need to quickly forget this week and move on to my first target this year, the Giro. It starts in less than 2 weeks' time!
