This can't be true...van Garderen has to find a way to loose it somewhere  a 2nd on a stage is something to work with, still some glory to reach this Tour!

And so, we reached the final week of the Tour. My hopes of a decent GC finish had been dashed on stage 14 but there was a slim chance of having a go at the KOM classification.
Stage 17 was a rolling transitional stage where van Avermaet joined the break. They did not survive and the sprinters took the prize.
Stage 18
I ventured into the seven man break with Kruijswijk, Vanmarcke and Craddock for company, among others. I picked up first place in the first three climbs, but was then dropped from the break. I was caught by Adam Yates and Dan Martin, who had escaped from the peloton, on the fourth climb. The duo contested for the win, with Yates taking it, moving to within 2 minutes of van Garderen. I eventually lost 5 minutes on the stage.
I joined the ten man break again on Stage 19. I had Polanc, my teammate, for company. I picked up no points on the first climb, but claimed first place in every other one. The break survived by a minute ahead of the pack but I only managed a 7th place. I moved up to 3rd in the KOM standings. However, this was the last stage with any KOM points on offer, which meant I could not move any higher in the KOM standings. I moved up one place in the GC to 28th.
Stage 20
The ITT was a last chance to redeem myself. I started off very well, going through the first two intermediates in first place. I lost some pace before the finish, the three weeks of racing taking its toll. Still, the timing screen showed 4th when I crossed the line. This would go down to 19th with a loss of over 2 minutes by the time the stage was wrapped up. Dumoulin took the win. I moved up another spot to 27th.
The ride into Champs Elysses on Stage 21 saw van Avermaet join the break to try his luck at glory. The break didn't survive and the historic bunch sprint was won by Sagan, who incredibly also finished 3rd in the GC. I did gain another place on this stage.

This is not how I'd imagined my first Tour going. I was consistently off the pace in most climbs, with breakaways turning out to be the only way I could stay ahead of the peloton. Being beaten by Benoot was not ideal, having made so much noise in the early season about beating both Meintjes and Betancur when we rode in the same race. On the second rest day, despite having finished 2nd on the stage the day before, I was doubting myself to no end as a GC candidate. On that same day, I took a decision which I thought would be good for my career in the near future, given how the season was turning out. By the time of the finish, I was calmer, but still not happy with my performance. I hope I can redeem myself in the few races that remain.

Just wondering how Abhishek’s TDF would have been, if he had chosen to stay with the team-mates to get some protection, save energy and only fight on the final climbs ?

By the time I got into the break for the first time on Stage 12, I was already 13 minutes down in the GC! Don't think trying to hang onto the pack would've helped much tbh.
Second place on Stage 15 was good, but I was aiming for accomplishing more things to remember from this TDF...

@Tamijo: Too many TT kilometers for mine and Lotto's liking. Pretty much put the race on a platter for TVG.
@Ripley and Aquarius: A strange race for sure! Too many of the top climbers were so far back after the TTT that their chasing only led to their downfall in later stages. You can see how many teammates are still stacked together at the finish, all because of that TTT.
Let's hope I can be as good as last year in the Vuelta...

I got a call from my agent the day after the Criterium Dauphine got over.
"Congrats on wearing the leader's jersey."
All I managed was, "Hmm."
"I'm looking for contracts for you. There has been some interest. Any preferences?"
"Grand Tour leadership."
"Lotto want to re-sign you. They're are offering you leadership for the Vuelta."
"Just the Vuelta?", I asked.
"For now, yes."
"Keep them on hold. See what else comes up."
"Sure boss, goodbye."

Lotto Soudal signed a one year contract extension with their rider Abhishek Sinha, who finished 2nd on Sunday's stage 15 of le Tour, behind Romain Bardet. The news doesn't come as a surprise following Louis Meintjes's transfer to MTN. Sinha was unavailable for comment but his agent said that this was a well thought out decision from both parties.
My performance in week two of the Tour had been the last straw. I had started to doubt my capabilities as a capable leader in Grand Tours. Just a month ago, I had put off re-signing with Lotto because they could not guarantee a Grand Tour leadership spot for me besides the Vuelta next year.
Lotto Soudal announced the signing of Nairo Quintana the week after the Criterium Dauphine. At that time, I had made up my mind to leave. Here I am, a month later, signing on to be his under-study!

I took a break right after the Tour to gather my thoughts. Ever since the Giro, it's been one blow after another after another, some good, most not so good. I have to be honest, it was a relief to have got the contract situation resolved early. The circumstances leading up to it were not ideal and I have to accept that and move on. Next season will be another challenge in my path to the top, but no one becomes a legend by taking the easy way to the top.
The prep race for the Vuelta. I was back as the leader of the team and going for the GC. The team was mostly for the flat with only the last stage featuring a significant climb.
Stage 1 was flat and the sprinters had their day. Sagan was so quick at the finish that he got eight seconds on the rest of the pack. de Buyst grabbed 4th for us.
Stage 2 was much of the same. de Buyst got 5th while Salomein, who was protecting me throughout the stage, finished strongly in 10th.
Stage 3 and again de Buyst was excellent, picking up 2nd place behind Sagan, who completed his hat-trick! Is there anything this man can't do? The first five finishers got 14 seconds on the pack. de Buyst moved up to 3rd in the GC and in the Points classification.
Stage 4 saw de Buyst take another 2nd place. Sagan was finally beaten, and finished 5th. de Buyst moved up to 2nd place in both the GC and the Points race.
Stage 5
This stage would decide the GC. The pace was slow in the first half but picked up as soon as the third climb was negotiated. After the first category climb, the break was caught and the the lead group was down to less than seventy riders. After the next climb, this number reduced to fifty. I waited for a couple of kilometres on the climb to the finish before attacking with 7 km to go. Miguel Angel Lopez did the same and caught up to me with 5 km to go. I could not hang on to his next acceleration and had to settle for 2nd place on the stage and in the GC.

My best ever finish in the GC. My first KOM win in a long time. It felt good to climb onto the podium. Sagan was up to his old tricks again, winning the Points classification and finishing on the podium in the GC again. Speaking of Points, de Buyst remained second on that classification. A good comeback for me but I was already looking forward to the Vuelta...

@Ian: Couldn't make a mark after a lot of talk from my side. A lot of it has to do with failing to live up to my own expectations. Gotta come back stronger, like you said.

To be honest, the contract decision was taken in haste, almost in self-loathing, but it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise...

After the good result in Burgos, I was keen to make a similar mark in the Vuelta. Last year, I had performed exceedingly well in this race, managing a top 10 finish. I had high hopes once again. Hopefully, I would be in good condition after coming through a tiring Tour.
Stage 1
We were poor once again in the TTT. We finished 18th, losing almost one and a half minutes to the stage winners. Team Sky won and Wout Poels wore the Red Jersey.
Stage 2 saw three of my teammates fall on the descent of the last intermediate climb. Two of them recovered but Merlier lost so much time that he finished outside the time limit! I stayed with the pack till the base of the climb to the finish. I couldn't hang on to the front and lost time again. Arredondo was the new leader of the GC.
Stage 3 had cobbles was one of the favourites for the win. As it turned out, the cobbles did not play a major role and the stage came down to a bunch sprint among the fast men. Davide Cimolai took the stage win for us.
Stage 4
I hit the front of the pack on the first climb. Uran and Sergio Henao had escaped from the pack after the break was caught and I led the chase. Slowly, the pack made their way back to the two attackers on the final descent but it was just a bit late. They held on without any time gaps to take the first two positions. Uran was the new GC leader. I climbed up from 29th to 21st in the GC.
Stage 5 was a much milder stage with an uphill finish. I stayed out of trouble and sprinted to 10th place.
Stage 6
A tough stage with a lot of climbing in the first week of the Vuelta. The peloton was down to a hundred riders after the first climb itself. I had only three teammates left. The pace continued to be high till the strong break was caught on the fourth climb of the day. There were attacks on the base of the last climb but none could get away. I was dropped on the climb to the finish, losing eight minutes to stage winner Arredondo, who re-took the lead in the GC, yet finished 15th on the stage. I even moved up to 13th in the GC and was the new leader in the U25s. Our team was down to 6 riders as both Cimolai and Demoitte finished outside the time limit!
