. Someone who injections fun and excitement back into the sport.
Did the journalist use "inject" on purpose after ranting about PEDs? If so, a pretty bad pun.
As for the story as a whole, I'll throw in the term Rashomon effect. I guess the story title was inspired by the movie of the same name. Color me intrigued. |

@Tamijo: There isn't going to be too much of going back and forth. For the most part, it's going to keep moving forward. But, from time to time, I'll change things up in an effort to make the story more interesting.
@Ripley: If you read the entry, you'll see the journalist never used the word 'inject.' But, it's a valid point that jandal7 made. And I had to look up the 'Rashomon effect' just now because I didn't know what it was, but yeah, it's kind of the same principle brought to the world of cycling with a secret left to be unraveled in the process.

Entry #9 | May 23, 2016: Conversation with Friend Mark Morren
Note: In the hotel room after Stage 2 of the An Post Ras.
Please, I'm begging you. If you don't do it, everyone will know for sure.
Alex, I just don't know. Wouldn't it be more embarrassing to get caught pulling a stunt like this than just coming clean and dealing with the aftermath?
Probably, but I'm willing to take the risk. We are about the same height, nobody would find out. I promise. This will work.
This is insane. So, you want me to follow you around, hang out with the team mechanic and just fill in as your stunt devil when called upon?
Don't look at me like I'm crazy. You know I'm right.
Maybe, but...
What other choice do I have? Ok, yeah... I could come clean, but as soon as I do that everyone is going to treat me differently. I don't want that. Please, I need your help. I'll do anything, this means the world to me.
Fine. I'll do it and I will be taking you up on that 'I'll do anything' offer. If this doesn't work, I'm telling everyone the truth. I am not getting in trouble over this.
Thank you so much! I knew I could count on you.
Hey, don't get too excited. You have to do your job first and put up the results.
No worries. You'll be standing on the podium tomorrow. I got this.

Asking his friend to get on the podium because he doesn't want that podium girl to kiss him? |

@Ian Butler: Getting warmer. You understood what Alex was asking for at least, but the reasoning behind it is way off.
@Tamijo: Exactly. Very outlandish.

Entry #10 | May 29, 2016: Observation with Mechanic Youri Hazelaar
Note: Looking back at a forgettable An Post Ras tour.
There is no such thing as a traditional work week in the professional cycling business. I can't remember the last time I didn't have to work on a weekend.
Yet, I wouldn't have it any other way. I couldn't survive working behind a desk and crunch numbers. I like the back seat of the team car just fine. That was true until this past week.
I'm the guy that gets called on when (explicit) hits the fan. And that (explicit) didn't (explicit) stop this past week in Ireland. I need a (explicit) vacation.
For a tour with seven flat stages and one hilly stage, you'd think the riders would have some fairly easy days in the peloton. It was the exact opposite.
Every day was (explicit) (explicit). Rain: Check. Crashes: Check. Broken bikes: Check. Trips to the hospital: Check. Wanting a new job: Check.
The first and most notable casualty was Alex Vogel on Stage 3. I didn't see it happen, but we heard it over the radio. One loud thump and a scream of agony.
When we got to the crash site, Alex was covered in mud and holding back tears. Team doctor Benjamin Clos rushed over and began assessing the damage.
Cuts, bleeding, but it didn't look too bad to me. So, I turned my attention over to the rubble that was once Alex's bike. All my hard work... Trashed. I was pissed.
I can be understanding and have sympathy if you get caught up in a wreck. That's a part of the sport. But, crashing on your own is a different story. I'm not saying Alex deserved it, but come on. Losing focus and hitting a curb is amateur hour.
While I'm sure the guys are going to have a lot of fun with this one back at the HQ by mocking the rookie, I'm left with a bike I have to somehow fix. (Explicit).
Thanks a lot kid. Enjoy your five week vacation... I mean rehab.

@tsmoha: Indeed. But, somebody has to call it how they see it.
@Ian Butler: Or lacks discipline. Or just struggles riding in the peloton. Or... It could be plenty of things. I'll let you decipher. Actions speak louder than words.
@Tamijo: Yep, so much for all the excitement and the nerves only to crash a day later. How quickly things can change.
@sutty68: Taking the side of the mechanic I see. (Explicit)

Entry #11 | June 8, 2016: Snapshots with Teammate Davy Gunst
Note: In the Rabobank HQ lounge after practice.
All the American sports get the best video games. All we get is FIFA (or PES if you're into that kind of thing) and, for us, we get stuck with Pro Cycling Manager. A bug-filled arcade game that is dressed up as a management game.
But, it still makes for a lot of fun when we have some down time.
Today me and a few of the guys were taking turns at this classic on PCM13.
Showing our loyalty by using team Blanco, my best result was a 5th by Bauke Mollema. Jan Maas took 7th with Mollema, and Peter Lenderink got lucky in the breakaway with a 4th for Luis Leon Sanchez.
We were about to end it there, but then Alex walked in. Peter, being the obnoxious guy he is, yelled across the room, "Does the injured princess want a turn?"
Arm in a cast, Alex glanced over and responded, "Don't ever call me that again. And it's your funeral if you want the disabled to beat your results."
Without hesitation, Jan said, "Come put your money where your mouth is then."
The challenge was on.
Alex took us all by surprise by getting Robert Gesink into the opening breakaway. It was a bold move. Then, bold quickly turned into crazy.
Instead of sticking with a 4-man group, Gesink cut the break in half on the first climb. Alex defended the action by saying, "Dead weight if they can't keep up."
Two turned into one going up the first ascent of Alpe d'Huez. I could tell this was never going to work, but props to Alex for keeping us all entertained.
Two kilometers into the second time up the monster climb, Joaquin Rodriguez had made the catch and Alberto Contador was closing in as well.
By then it felt like everyone in the HQ was gathered around watching Alex play and Peter couldn't help but brag, "Told you that would never work. Looks like I'm winning this one boys."
Alex quickly turned around and gave a smirk to Peter, "What? You thought I put all my eggs in one basket?"
The next thing we know, Mollema goes storming past Gesink for third place.
1. Contador. 2. Rodriguez. 3. Mollema. Alex had pulled it off.
All the jokes directed at Alex quickly were aimed at Peter. But, that didn't last long. Peter always had to have the last laugh.
"Hey, you might want to check the settings."
Alex's excitement morphed into anger. Peter had purposefully turned down the difficulty to easy to taint the result.
"I thought you needed some extra help... Injured princess."
