The threads aim is about to discover many climbs that are simply ignored by race organizers.
The climb should be reasonable for racing(e.g. no Scanuppia)
Some photos,the place of the climb,the possible connections with other climbs and which races could use it would be good.
I am starting with Plateau de Solaison.
Plateau de Solasion (also known as Col de Solasion) is an awesome climb located above the Arve valley.It has several ways to approach it, the hardest of them is this one from Thuet which I will be talking about:
It is 12.9 km at %8 and it has its stepest gradients at the beginning.The later kilometers are still hard though and it has a flattish last km of %2 before reaching the top.

The road is awesome and it is one of my favourite climbs.
Also there are many ways to connect the climb to other climbs.
You can make a queen stage with using Col de la Ramaz,Col du Romme,Mont Saxonnex and finishing in Plateau de Solasion.Though it has to be said that it only uses the last 10.3 km of that climb.
One of the users in velowire(Olivier73) have also made a stage finishing at Solaison and the stage looks like this.
I have also made a stage that finishes in Solaison that uses these last 4 climbs.It also has Forclaz de Queige,Aravis and Glieres at the beginning.

It can be an awesome queen stage with a MTF in Tour de France.

Used a few times in Tour du Pays Savoie and also used once in Tour de l'Avenir 2014 where Ilya Davidenok beated Sam Oomen while Miguel Angel Lopez dropped everyone and took the GC lead.

I've ridden the Solaison, lovely climb up especially the lower parts and the very top, slightly sketchy descent on the way back down though. I'll post some up here when I have time.

Passo di Pramollo/Nassfeldpass is the 2nd climb of this thread.It has 2 sides to climb from,one from Tröpolach (Austrian) side which averages %8.2 over 11.2 km and other from Pontebba (Italian) side which is 13 km at %7.5.
Now lets look at the Tröpolach side:
It has it first km at %5 but then gets up to %8 and it has it steepest km avergaing %11 between 7 and 6 km to the summit.Then it still continues with with gradients around %9.5 with a km between 4 km to go and 3 km to go averaging %10.5.The last 2 kms average %7 and are a bit easier but this is a very hard climb nonetheless.
You can precede this climb with the Egger Alm climb(10.34 km at %8.2) though it has some flat between these two climbs.
You can succeed this climb with the easier side of Passo del Cason di Lanza(though it has some false flat between Nassfeldpass and Cason di Lanza) and then harder side of Forcella di Lius with finishing in Paluzza.

I have made a stage which uses Egger Alm-Nassfeldpass/Passo di Pramollo-Passo del Cason di Lanza and Forcella di Lius with a finish in Paluzza.

Now lets look at Pontebba side:
It starts with easier 4 km that averages %6.25 though it has a km of %8.5.Then it gets much harder with 5 km at %9 before easing off to %7.5 for a km before it gets to %9 for the next km.The last 2 km are %5a average.It is still a very hard climb even though it is easier than the Austrian side.
You can make an awesome mountain stage with Crostis,Zoncolan,easier side of Forcella di Lius(it has some false flat between Zonc and Lius),harder side of Passo del Cason di Lanza and use Passo di Pramollo/Nassfeldpass as the final climb and either finish on the summit or go donwhill to Tröpolach.

PS:Don't know if Tröpolach or Vorderberg can host a stage finish.Then again from the Pontebba side there can be an awesome MTF stage so it is not that big of a problem.

Yes but it doesn't have the other side of the climb for example.
And the main reason is that I have to save the photos firstly to photobucket, imageshack, tinypic etc. while I can just copy and paste the image from cyclingcols. I will use the Spanish sites like Altimetrias for the climbs in Spain though.

BTW the climbs map is always in development, I'm sure they'd appreciate if you submitted the missing climbs

I think I should make a bump since Solaison, the first climb of the thread, was used by Dauphine.
Another unknown climb for cycling fans, Picon Blanco will be used in Vuelta a Burgos this year. A brutal climb , and can be preceded by the other climbs in that area (Lunada, Alisas etc.) (It would be awesome if the other side (the 5 kms of dirt road to La Sia) gets asphalted, because then you can do a Picon Blanco-Lunada combo or going all the way up to Picon del Fraile.

I just discovered that thread, but what's wrong with the Scanuppia? I haven't heard of that one...is it gravel only?

Too hard for a professional race. (7 km at %18 and a km at %25, and the max percent is said to be %45) Also the road needs resurfacing. (part of the road is concrete and the concrete part is narrow and on a very steep road (constantly at %20-25 and max at %45))

Yes, but it is so steep for a 7 km climb that realistically it won't be used. Also the space for a stage finish is a problem, logistics etc.
And tbh, I don't see the point of using this climb in a pro race. |

Solaison is a really good climb. I won't bet against ASO using that now they have seen it in Dauphine, its a perfect MTF.
Awesome climb in Burgos, I always follow that race but recently the MTF has been a waiting game in that race o the legendary Laganus de Neila, so good with a shake up.
And there are sooooo many climbs you rather see in the Giro than Scanuppia because its frankly unrealistic and Italy have a boatload of great, great climbs thats rarely/never used in the Giro. When we are at extremely steep stuff, why not Punta Veleno - used in Trentino 2012 when Pozzovivo won? its this brute, very similar to Zoncolan, but a little shorter, its awesome: https://www.cyclingcols.com/col/PuntaV...untaVeleno |

Or Colle della Fauniera, only used two times in the Giro, a long and high altitude climb you best can compare to Stelvio from its hardest side. Only used 2 times in the Giro, most recently in 2003 in a legendary stage Dario Frigo won. Savoldelli won in 99. Best from Pradleves.

If you wanna go full retard you can throw the much more known Agnello or Lombarde (a finish in Vinadio like in the Giro of 2016 would be great) in the mix but frankly, there really isn't need for that. Those two climbs in rapid sucession should be enough.

Passo San Marco is another climb I really like, its not as hard as the 3 aforementioned climbs, but its up there. Very comparable to Tourmalet: https://www.cyclingcols.com/col/SanMarco
Its the location which make it great, you can make a very tough Lombardia-type course around Como/Bergamo with this climb.
They used it in 2007 when it made for a very, very good stage in the Giro, a tough medium mountain day which Garzelli ultimately won ahead of Simoni and Bettini. |

And the last climb of the day from me is another brute, Passo di Pennes/Penser Joch which also is a pretty underrated/underused climb in the Giro, only used 2 times. The great about thimg that climb is it links absolutely perfect with Monto Giovo/Jaufenpass which is mostly known for Pantani's great exploits. Its a combo you shouldnt ignore:
From Vipiteno, not from the easier and longer side. Its very akin to the finishing climb on the queen stage of this year's Giro, the Umbrailpass, only 2 km longer.

You can further combine the climbs with Timmelsjoch and Rettenbach/Tiefenbachferner, used 3 times in a row in Tour de Suisse (despite being an Austrian climb), by going over Timmelsjoch into Austria and finishing on Rettenbach which would make for, probably, the hardest stage in GT history. The Schleck Fan can probably map that one out to show just how brutal those 4 climbs in sucession will be as Im a noob when it comes to designing stages and such. |

Its not completely unknown obviously, the climbs mentioned above have also been raced a few times, but the Romme-Colombiere combo is money, Romme is what made this stage. One of the only hihgligts of the atrociously badly designed Tour de France 2009, this stage was carnage, some people might remember it by Hushovd's green jersey herorics, Sastre's last effort to brake it apart in the bottom of Romme (as he won the previous Tour and needed to show himself), Contador's attack which dropped Klöden and effectively put Armstrong on the podium who struggled mightily that day or F. Schleck winning in LGB.

Not as hard as the climbs above obviously, but a relatively short and steep climb, only followed by a few kilometres of descent before starting to climb Colombiere.
