Garmin Velothon Berlin (1.1) Berlin, 186.0 kms
Three non-WT riders established the break of the day. Bacon (Tirol CT), Van Den Brande (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Kosse (Team Roth-Skoda). LottoNL's Reinders joined them inside the last 25km. The gap was 1'20". As everything came back together the next attacker came in the person of Thomas Moses (Sky). Catching him was a real handful for the bunch. But they did, and afterwards everything went according to plan for our train. Until the Sunweb rider dropped back near the middle of the road. Martínez lost Molano's wheel, a disadvantage he would not be able to make up anymore. We've been really unlucky in mass sprints this year. Eventually Bokeloh sprinted to flowers on home soil, ahead of Bosman. Giro Stage 20: Another monster, good to see Ion limit his loss and holding his GC.
Berlin: Too bad with the train, still 3 in top 10

Overall it's been a great Giro indeed. Ion finished two places lower in a field that was way stronger than last year's. Now we just need a little more luck and concentration in the mass sprints.

I've have read the 5-6 pages that I was missing:
Sam dominance in California
How is his calendar looking ahead of his prime objetive, Vuelta a España?
Ion will finish sixth in Giro. A great result despite the debacle of Stage 19.
Also poor Majka. Where is he now in GC?

Probably:
GP Gippingen | Belgian NCs | Prueba Villafranca | San Sebastian | Burgos, or Poland | Eneco Tour |

Sixth is only one spot off what I had a mind as the perfect GC position, and we could've had it if not for that one stage. Still the team and Ion should be proud of what they achieved.
As for Majka, I don't think I have ever seen a rider collapse that brutally; I might have failed to spot a crash or something. The next and final stage will be up soon along with a race recap. You'll be able to see for yourself then.

Giro d'Italia (WT) Stage 21/21, 197.9 kms
Is This the Way to Brescia? The final breakaway of this Giro included five riders in Ochoa, Eriksson, Canty, Magner & Kerkhof. All of those are strongest on bumpy courses. Just as the bunch was about to hit the local circuit López and Kennaugh got held up by a crash. It took Quick-Step quite awhile to get him back. Luckily for the Colombian they did the job. In the meantime Ochoa was the first to get dropped from the front group, 14km from the finish line. Movistar's brutal pace started to cause splits inside the last 10km. Once again Miguel Ángel López foud himself pedalling on the wrong side of it. While the Maglia Bianca sat close enough to bridge, lots of others were less lucky. Among those forced to battle the headwind themselves were Formolo, Nibali, Mollema, Craddock, Pinot, Kennaugh, Latour and Nerz. At the front Gaviria dispelled any doubt on who was the best sprinter in this Giro by winning his third stage. That way, he also took over Landa's Maglia Rossa. Izagirre finished inside that first group. The organization generously bailed out many contenders by putting all of them in the s.t. 2019 Giro d'Italia Stage 21/21 1 | | Fernando Gaviria | Movistar Team | 4h28'51" | 2 | | Mark Cavendish | Team Sky | s.t. | 3 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Elia Viviani | IAM Cycling | s.t. | 5 | | Sean De Bie | Lotto - Soudal | s.t. | 6 | | Andrea Guardini | Team Katusha - Alpecin | s.t. | 7 | | Sonny Colbrelli | Orica - Scott | s.t. | 8 | | Kevin van Staeyen | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 9 | | Nikias Arndt | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 10 | | Davide Cimolai | Team Katusha - Alpecin | s.t. |

Coming second in Romandie should've been a good sign, but the Swiss youngster's totally flopped at his first Giro d'Italia as the clear leader of his team. Fortunately IAM Cycling saw Rodrigo Contreras (11th) step up.2019 Giro d'Italia Fact sheet - 10 different riders have worn the Maglia Rosa
- Riders from 6 different countries have won a stage
- Majka was the first ever Pole to wear the Maglia Rosa
- Quintana won the Giro without one single stage win
- Gaviria is the first ever Colombian to win the Maglia Rossa
- Vuillermoz is the first Frenchman to win the Maglia Azzurra since 1984
- López is the fourth ever Colombian to win the Maglia Bianca
- Majka lost 1 hour in only two stages

I haven't been around much in the story section as of late, but I'm going to be catching up on this over the next few days! I love the style of the reports, it's just so visually pleasing plus, I have a soft spot for those reviews, and the Giro one is amazing!

A really good result for Ion considering just how tough this Giro was. Poor Majka, must have had a stomach bug or something, though possibly Quintana would have proven too strong in any case. |

Thanks a lot for stopping by cunego! I have been looking for a style that I like myself for a long time but now that I have found it it's a simple case of keeping the templates in .txt files and inserting new pictures/tables. Hope you'll have a fun time catching up!

I'm more than satisfied with 6th and so should Ion. As I said to other followers, 5th could've been possible without the horrendous Stelvio stage but hey, that's cycling.
It's still unclear what caused Majka to hit such a gigantic wall, but I think he could've been very very close to the overall win or at least a podium. Not even time will tell this...
For me Quintana was not the best climber in the race either, but Landa had two very bad TTs, losing 2'58" in total. Then look at the final overall standings.

Three in the top ten at Garmin Velothon Berlin is a very good result
You should be happy with Izagirre's performance at the Giro too
And good luck at the Dauphiné ! |
