The watt numbers over the whole Giro seemed quite low, whenever they talked about it...Gaviria winning a sprint with below 1000w, Dumoulin doing 400w over 5 minutes...that always seemed a bit low to me.

With the experience Tom D has gained during this giro, he will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Without his two big mistakes (poop incident and getting in trouble for riding in the back of the peloton) this could've been a more comfortable win. Heck, the poop incident alone costed him around 2 minutes. I could see him challenge to win a TdF if it's a route like in 2012. |

I doubt anyone can challenge Froome in the near future in the Tour. Only way he can actually lose it is if you throw 3 or 4 cobbled stages in the mix and by the third stage his AI will probably learn how to deal with those too.

They seemed high on Blockhaus and Oropa. Low on Stelvio stage and Ortisei.
Seemed the high pace of Movistar/Bahrein during the stages lowered the top end performance in the 3rd week.
But Oropa was totally crazy, even for a mono climb stage 6,6 w/kg during 20 minutes is absolutely insane. 1900 VAM. |

Congrats Tommy D and dutch fans, you have waited very long. 
I have to say i dont like these Froomesque riders that absolutely dominate TTs and in the same race are able to outclimb climber specialist, but that is probably just me, seeing dopeheads like that of the past , distant one and more recent. It just does not make sense...
My biggest hats off goes to Jan Hirt though...i have dreamed about top20 for him, but his third weeks was so awesome and 12th place is something from PCT team and his debut. Chapeau!
One great stat to show what he did:
#Giro100 Only @HirtJan of @CCCProTeam never lost a single place in general classification during the @giroditalia
His GC placing during stages were like this during three weeks: 116,76,74,38,38,38,36,33,26,25,22,

But he didn't out climb the climbers. He took all his time in the tt's and then hung on on the climbs.
It was more that the climbers didn't have the legs to attack than Dumoulin dominated them.

Yeah, that's great . As a Pole I was also looking forward to his GT debut as he is riding for CCC (at least now, after this Giro he might get a WT contract, good for him). Also, that's why I picked him to my Velo team. I didn't expect him to be 12th, but I was hoping for the top 20. If only he could be better in TT and not lose that time in first week. I think he might been even 10th. |

What about Stage 14 where he put time into the climbers on a climb? Put 14" into Quintana, 35" into Pinot and 43" into Nibali
EDIT - He also out climbed all but Quintana on Blockhaus as well

Yes, in the odd stage.
Overall though he put masses of time into the climbers in the tt's and then lost time to all of them in the mountains.
I know there was "poo gate" which skews the times a bit. But he certainly didn't dominate the climbers. He defended his position in the mountains.
Someone like Froome puts time into everyone in the mountains and in the tt's, and even on the flat and decents these days, which makes him very difficult to beat. Dumoulin can still be beaten in the mountains, given the right terrain/riders.
I think the issue with the route was that it was too back loaded with climbs meaning the climbers had no energy to attack and really light the race up. Had there been an extra mountain stage in the second week we may have seen a different result as the true climbers may have been able to make more of an impact.

If it was not for the SHITGATE that cost him extreme amount of power, he would loose barely anything on the climbs outside of Blockhaus. Anyway, my point is, that you cant really dominate TTs and stay with best climbers who are better physically built for it (and thus lack TT power), unless you are dopehead like Indurain, Armstrong or Froome.

Tenby literally changes from family holidays to hen party central at about 5PM on Friday afternoon Had to shield my daughter from a group of "police women" with a giant inflatable penis while walking through the town on the way back from our meal
