Could this be the tightest and perhaps most dramatic GT of all time.
I can't really remember any since the 80s, but then my old memory is slipping fast.
4th place jumping up to the win on the very last stage. Hard to see that happened before.
So glad for Tom D, since he lost the Vuelta last year.....
Cobo 2011 veulta didn't he win by 13 secs or something
2012 Giro, 12" win by Hesjedal. That was more dramatic.
2005 Giro, 28" win by Savoldelli. That was a good one with Basso trying to fight back.
2007 Tour, 23" win by Contador. That was a good final time trial with Evans blowing the race apart.
1989 Tour, 8" win by Lemond. Always an utter classic, yes 80's but my god legendary.
2003 Vuelta, 28" win by Heras. Great final climbing day.
1993 Vuelta, 29" win by Rominger. Drama on the final few stages between Zulle and Rominger.
2017 Giro was a good close one, but there have been better i think

What?
Climbers had enough stages to make a difference. One day they decided to play weird tactical games. lasr weeks they did not had legs left
Take an honest look at the mountain in this years Giro, 6,5-7% and ALL of the them for some reason go flat the last 4-5 km to the top. so a clear + for a roleur like Tom
Blockhaus, Stelvio were defo not "easy" climbs.
Then almost every climb had up to 12-15% steepness.
And how did Blockhaus go?
12-15 steepness for 500 meters, and then climb ended with 4-5 km flat. |

Jeez what more do you want than Blockhaus and those other beasts they climbed on. Riis said it perfectely about Nibali and Quintana. Maybe Pinot could have made more impact who knows. Not every GT has to be a zoncolan jerkfest where they just grind it out. GTs need diversity!

3-4 times the last 40 years at the Giro we had 3 riders within 1 minute, but this time it was 4, then even the 5th and 6th was within 1m 30s.
Coming from 4th the last stage was a first time. Well done Tom D.
Yes Lemond winning by 8 s was a nail biter, that is correct. A similar tempo finish.

Plenty of stages, but Quintana was under par. Nibali was about as good as you could expect, but Tom was incredible always minimising the damage and even winning on Oropa. That said, many stages could obviously have designed to give a better show, especially that Dolomite stage where they did a pretty pointless loop to Pontives.
Chapeau Tom, the most interesting is now whether Prudhomme sees Dumoulin as Froome's biggest competitor and design a TT-heavy course.
How do you expect the to make a difference on these gradients? The mountains they rode is suited for roleurs. If you are going to have 70 timetrial KM, then climbers need better terrain then what they have been given this Giro
Dont cry i think it was good route ..okey more time trials. But it was known beforehand
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

Quickstep won 5 stages in the Giro white and points jerseys and still no sponsor for 2018. Cycling is fucked up. |

That's total nonsense. Climbs are for rouleurs, when they are peaking at 5-6%, but most climbs peaked at 12-15%.
So 500m of steepness makes the difference. Means nothing. When Tom got 4km of 3-6% gradient to work with at the end + for some reason a flat part of around 10-15 km on at leat two stages. |

That's only less than 1% over Savoldelli's time. I guess that's close

Pretty sure it would have to be a good sponsor, not just a sponsor. Kind of like Columbia.

Blockhaus, Umbrailpass and Piancavallo was for pure climbers. Very hard, long and all pretty to very steep climbs.
Anyways, as I said before, I agree that the route could have been better - if thats what you mean. |

There is a reason there was a seperation between the two lines, because i was answering two different things.
And how did Blockhaus go? (Quintana attacked and put time onto them all)

Dude stop with the denial. There were plenty of steep climbs! Just look at how many TTist are in the top10 Pozzovivo, Pinot, Zakarin, Quintana. All rouleurs who benefited from these minor lumps on the road...

Don't think we are going to see 100% eye to eye. So let's leave it at that. I thought the race lagged one or two more stages like Blockhaus with proper gradient not just lasting 500m. Seemed like they tried to make the perfect race for Nibali to win, and then Tom came in from the side at took the win with a superior timetrial. Don't think they saw that one coming |

But seriously, lets wait with the complaining about routes to Tour de France this year. Take a look at the stages - its pure dogshit.
Interesting if Tom is going to the Vuelta.... |
