On the subject of running, does anyone know to get better at running Grin. I am honestly really bad and don't really know why. It's not like I am really fat or anything, but it just seems that I can't run very well. As well as this, I am an Australian so I play a lot of cricket and recently, fatigue has slowed me down when playing which was a bit disappointing, even though we won the game, finals will be coming up soon so I need to be fitter for that. Cricket does involve a lot of running and I guess I also want to get fitter for any sports I do in the future and just for everyday life.

Thanks for the help (in advance)!

Marathon at 5:00 hours, maybe I shouldn't have signed up only 2 weeks in advance without training. Bonked hard from 25 km and home, but what an experience!

Well who would have thought a marathon takes proper training. blaster-foren.de/styles/default/xenforo/smilies.blaster/scratchchin.gif

I remember mine, I was so weak afterwards. But what a great feeling it was that I clocked under 4 hours. Smile Right now, I am still trying to find motivation. From the injury, i am struggling to get in running rhythm and I did a few runs the past weeks but I am not burning with desire yet. Hope I can get into shape of things in March latest, which also depends on university and job commitments sigh

I've started running properly too recently, only really to make it less days on the indoor trainer in winter though. Pfft

I was wondering if anybody could give me an idea of what time/pace to aim for, ran 7km in 30 minutes (a bit over 4 minutes/km I guess) at my best so far, but have no clue how I'm really going or what would be a good time to aim for a 7km or 10km run by the end of (Swedish) winter. As it'd make getting out in the dark a bit more fun if I had a proper shortish term goal for my running. Smile

Hit a lifetime personal best in the 5K this past weekend. Ran the 5K on a track in 16:48! The guy who won ran an astonishing 14:54... where do these people come from

Finished my collegiate running career this past weekend. Ran a personal best 4:24 in the mile and won my race.

Ran a 17:12 in the 5K about 2 hours later, not a PR, but good day to end my running career at the college level. Will return to the local 5K scene here in a few weeks!

Well done, great results! The mile in 4:24 impresses me the most, that is fast.

Thank you! My previous record was 4:28 so I beat it by 4 seconds! My high school record was 4:39 which was 4 years ago, so I have improved quite well in my collegiate career! Grin

Two days ago I ran my annual half marathon of the year, Göteborgsvarvet. The race started out well and I passed 10k just a little faster than I planned to, 42:10. I had to pay for the quick start during the second half of the race though. My legs were filled with lactic acid during the last 10 km and I crossed the finish line with a time of 1:30:14, the second year in a row I'm less than 15 seconds from running sub 90 in the race. Disappointed!

Man feel sorry for you lakebeach. 15 seconds after 21km is literally nothing. Too bad. Sad

I have switched my training routine now. Since the injury I have not got a good rhythm since I am pretty occupied with jobs and university stuff. That's why I switched to running a weekly half marathon and after some suffering the past 3 times, today I had a new best time at 1:41. Happy with this. I'm aiming to continue this approach and mix it up with 10k ideally at tuesday. This is less than I ran the past year (usually 5x 10k per week) but it fits better with my schedule. The goal is to run a marathon before I maybe travel for 3 weeks to India, so around early september. Hoping to improve my marathon time to 3:40 as a far-out goal, this would literally mean that I improve by 20 minutes. This sounds a lot but back when I ran my marathon, with my mum as my sole supporter, I had a bad day and was pretty dehydrated. I'm sure in a real race I can get easily 10 minutes just by motivation alone and 10 more minutes by training long distance running.

Do you guys think this approach is valid? I wasn't convinced earlier but today was really good and this helps me get my stamina up to track, which has been lacking. I mostly got my stamina from doing 100k+ rides, I get this benefit has by now gone completely. Sad

You have improved a lot over the last few years. Your 5k time a seem to have improved a lot since I saw your first posts in here and the mile time is very impressive!!

@Shonak: I'm no expert for those long distances as I only ever really trained for the middle distance. However, I would recommend to include some interval training. Might not be as crucial as for my distances as long runs can do a lot for marathon training but I think occasionally replacing the 10k run with something quicker can help to make those long runs feel easier and imo it helps a lot to do some sessions in your race pace as preparation.

Some spontaneous ideas for intervals :

- 10x 400m in your 5k pace with 400m slow jogging as break in between (if necessary a longer break after the first half) (if you have a track available)

- 3x3 km in your target marathon pace with 2 minutes break (length and number of repetitiona of these depend on your shape)

As said I have no experience with those distances so I'd be cautious with my ideas. However, there are a couple do free online trainings plans online which can be an inspiration for suitable intervals. e.g. https://m.runnersw...263622.htm (German link)

It's been a long time since I last posted in this thread. Didn't really want to write about it because I couldn't train between October and February due to knee problems ( patella lateralisation ) that started in my training camp when I had a better shape / endurance than ever before.

Now I'm back again and the legs feel better with every week. Started the season early with a very disappointing 400m (54,6 sec) five weeks ago and a mediocre 800m: 2:03. That time was okay but I was still disappointed as that was the perfect field for me (most others were between 1:57 and 2:01).

Today I used some local meeting for the next test. No field at all (the next best was 2:06) but a team mate acted as my personal pace maker for the first 450m. I felt really well and clocked a 2:00,0 which makes me confident that I can beat my personal best (1:58:93) in July.

Today I ran 11:14 on 3k, which I am actually quite happy, considering my knee injury in the last year, as well as the fact, that I started running again around 3 weeks ago and my first try was only 500m, because I couldn't keep onto my feet for longer.

But on a sidenote, a good friend of my dad, Henry Wehder, who won the Transeurope-footrace some years back, decided to go nuts on his current challenge. He wants to run 10000 km(ten thousand), in 110 days(without rest!). That's an average of over 90km per day. Since he currently lives in Norway, he drove to the "Nordkap" and started running a few days ago. He used Strava for the first days, but apparently he can't really use it properly(he's over 60 already), so he will probably just run without it from now on.

He will run from the Nordkap to Germany, will compete in the "Deutschlandlauf" over 1300km through Germany on 19 days. That will have some serious climbing involved, since it will end on the "Zugspitze". The highest mountain of Germany. Then he will continue running through Austria, Italy, France and Spain until he arrives in Gibraltar. Then he will turn around and run on the coast until he arrives in Athen(Greece). He will then compete in the Spartathlon, which is a 246km race(on one day).

I made a quick picture how the route will look (not very accurate, just to give a perspective)

And also for our Americans:

If you want to, maybe follow him on Strava. Maybe I can tell him how to use it properly. (if he got the time at the end of the day)

Maybe it's time to update this little thread.

Once I was out of university and the part time jobs, I was living a while in Frankfurt where the regularity of daily job meant I could better focus on running, however it was also quite a bit wild still then. I did my (2nd) marathon after the injury plagued me earlier and ran around 3:51. Later on - as some may know - I moved to Delhi in early 2019, where I gained quite some kilos and did little sport except for some football with folks at the German embassy. Not really happy that I let my training drop so completely.

Once I arrived in Munich, then Paris in late 2019 I took my months in Delhi as a sign that I had to train hard again. Without aspirations for another marathon and the COVID pandemic coming up, I had initially quite some difficulties with my classic 10k runs which I used to do fairly easy. But gladly I got back in shape eventually, running through forests as well as up Sacre Coeur.

It took me around a year however to be in a good running shape until I felt ready to approach a marathon again. In early 2021 I moved to the western part of Paris, close to forest. The rhythm of daily morning runs and more intensive workouts worked really well, and in autumn 2021 I did the paris marathon at 3:49:00. I did it alongside a work colleague, was a really nice experience altogether. My issue however was that I clearly lacked the exp to go beyond 25, 30km. It just becomes really tough at this point.

Alongside my running, I also did a lot of cycling since mid-2020 again (before, it was too occassional sadly). Now I have even picked up swimming again in mid 2021 and have made some great progress I think, even thinking about ironman 70.3 in mid-2023.

I have had my latest marathon race two weeks ago, running 3:27:10 - a time I am quite happy about. I have scheduled my next marathon in late September, determined to keep the fitness level & motivation high and avoid any potential 2nd delhi disaster hitting me. I might even do a late autumn marathon in late November, to prepare already for Paris 2023 in early April.

Although I am much older than in my formative running and cycling years, I feel that my discipline nowadays makes me a better sportsman and can better strive for proper goals. It took some time sadly to realize that, a lot of athletes have this mindset already when they are like 17 or 18 year olds, esp nowadays it seems, but for me and my new hobby of collecting marathon medals it is quite a nice fit and happy to continue - and further improve my time - in the next few years.

Man, you guys are fast Shock

Been running on and off for the last 3 years or so now and haven't been able to break the 5 m/km pace even at 5km. And the pace gradually gets slightly worse with longer distances.

Congrats, Shonak. I can't even imagine running a marathon even more so with such a pace.

Thanks alex! Smile

Finished the marathon last weekend with a new pb of 3:12:18. Quite happy I managed to stay below 3:15:00. It was a nice route along the Loire however only few spectators but good nutrition stations and not too much noise. In that it was a rather humbling, meditative marathon. Personally I like some spectators but I find the music always a bit too much.

After an initial first km to catch up to the 3:15 pace group, I stayed with them for about the first 10 km. Then I slowly upped the pace, more out of convinence as the large bulk was getting a bit bothersome at the relais stations.

I have kept well in sight of the 3:15 until the half marathon mark when I noticed that I was still very comfortable. I tried to up the pace a bit but also struggled a bit between km 30 and 35, however I was always well in control and managed to still overtake many other runners. In the last 5-7 km I upped the pace again a bit, knowing I was going for a PB. In the end I ran the second half of the marathon only around 1 1/2 minute slower than the first, coming sorta close to a negative split, which I am very happy about it.

Especially the last 10km I felt still very strong, feeling easy I could continue hard. That was a first, as usually I was closer to bonking in the past. I am very happy that the past marathons and especially all the half marathons I did this year (approx. 30 halfmarathon in training + lots of kilometers on the bike too + 3-5x per week swimming) paid off in such a great cardio and fitness.

I will see how La Rochelle turns out, hoping I can replicate my prior performance and perhaps even up it a bit. Its also ok however if I run it rather slow. My ambition is now to definitely go below sub 3 hours one day in a race, perhaps even managing a NYC marathon qualifying time one day. Hoping I can maybe reach it already in April 2023 at Paris Marathon but it might also take me 1-2 years more.. its not important really, as I enjoy the training so much and keep motivated anyway.

With my first triathlon 70.3 planned for 2013 and then in 2014 an iron man I have also other goals besides the sub 3 hour marathon, lets see how that turns out then.

Shonak
2 weeks ago I did Paris Marathon and I am already off to my next goal, putting in cycling mileage for the Ironman competition in Mid-August and the two 70.3 triathlons preceding this event.

Paris Marathon was a check on my goals; I managed to do it the course in 2:54:34, another improvement on my last marathon in La Rochelle where I did it in 3:05:xx. More importantly I managed to reach my goal to achieve a NYC marathon qualifying time. Will be likely going to do that marathon next year then, and save Boston for some year as it is too close to Paris Marathon and I would like to give Paris a third go, presumably the last for a while.

I did half of the race with a mate who also managed to be slightly under 3 hours - a great achievement for him given it was only his second marathon, for me it was my 7th! At the half marathon mark he was too uncomfortable with our high pace (mostly around 4:00 min/km) and decided to ease a bit. I kept pushing for another 10km until I ran out of energy. Half marathon was also a new PB, clocking around 1:25 and 2 minutes faster than 1 month prior at the Semi Paris.

On top of that, my dossard came off on one of the stitches, so it was just supe rloosely hanging around! It was a real heavy wind that day, crappy clouds all the time, so I stopped and wantd to fix it - if it had flown away my time would have been gone too with the heavy wind at times! That said i didnt manage to fix it and lost valuable 20 seconds and worse, lost my rhythm.

It was stupid, and the race was clearly more difficult after that moment as I lost the pacing group I had kept with for 5 kms and was comfortable with it. Eventually I got back into but it got really too close for comfort.

At 40km there was a difficult uphill section - a friend and my mum who came from Tyrol were in that corner and cheering me on, precious support for my morale. I was digging already at the limit at that time and they saw that clearly.. 15km before I was still smiling and waving at them, no such thing this time.

However, I was doing the maths in my head throughout the last 10km and I knew I could make it. The tricky part is that my coros pace 2 watch tells me i am better than I am actually, and so it was not fully reliable to trust the numbers. Shortly before the hill section I decided I have to give everything as I would have been crushed if I ended up with 2:55 something... and missing out on NYC. So I paced before, and up the hill, and luckily the downhill was a long stretch, somehow getting back on a 4:04 min/km pace.

In the last corner there was some prick filming another runner and blocked the last corner, told him piss off and enjoyed the last 300 meters on the Avenue Foch, knowing that I had it clocked in. Great to celebrate with the mate who did sub 3 hours, and later on some work colleagues at brunch but the best was that my mum came to visit - really shows how precious support is in such a race.

Next one will be the royan marathon as a bit of an training marathon and won't be fully raced. Then Deauville 70.3 followed by Challenge Walchsee, culminating finall in Vichy Ironman.

Catch my run on strava here. https://www.strav...1/overview
