Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/isqNPZu.png
The breakaway consisted of Gougeard, Lander and two of the expected Italians in Zardini and Chirico. Soon though it would became clear that several formations wanted to acquire Cavendish's pink jersey. His team Sky may allow attacks at the end, so they don't have to control already.
i.imgur.com/iKVj5s5.png
Zardini was the strongest in front, but he was reeled in before the first summit. Just like the others he had got literally nothing out of his move.
i.imgur.com/Jhh7PsY.png
The first climb claimed its victims. Approximately 60 riders were caught behind, including surprising names such as Latour, Spilak and Formolo. It was unclear if the leaders had experienced a crash, been held up by one or if the entire group simply could not follow the pace, losing 1'15".
i.imgur.com/NmlumDo.png
Cavendish had to let go three kilometers from the last top. Surprisingly, the majority of Team Sky dropped back to assist him. Even team leader Pinot, co-leaders Kennaugh and Carthy, Bottura and Rohan Dennis did.
i.imgur.com/hGY8Grj.png
Ochoa attacked at the exact same moment. Team Sky was not there to chase him down, and no other team seemed to feel like taking over the job. While some rejoined the pack from the A1 our Colombian escaped.
i.imgur.com/kWVTs9L.png
Ion Izagirre came to the fore in the descent, trying to limit the pace in the peloton even more. The line was 16.9 kilometers away. Ochoa had 2'40", and keeping that gap'd mean a move into the pink jersey as well.
i.imgur.com/gm3ipzu.png
Some accelerations came in the background, but a reduced bunch was given the same time, 1'24" after the newly-crowned pink jersey Ochoa. What a great way to claim your second win since joining the pro circuit!

Congrats on pink and a great victory! Zardini didn't finish?
Also, do you mind sharing the entire teams' stats or does it take the imagitation of the story away? Keep it up

Good result for Diego and let's hope he can defend the Maglia Rosa Smile

Thanks purepasd! Zardini indeed didn't finish, our medical staff is currently working on a report.

I'm not dead against sharing stats but I don't feel like sharing them all. I shared some before in this post (https://pcmdaily.com/forum/viewthread....st_1212955). If you want to know anything else, just ask. Wink

Thanks sutty! Keeping the jersey for a while will be a utopia as his form is alreayd going down. But tomorrow's going to be a nice day for sure in that jersey. Smile

Shortly after the conclusion of the third stage in this year's Giro d'Italia, we learned that Edoardo Zardini would not be able to finish this edition.

DNF

In an exciting stage finale we missed what exactly happened, due to a lack of actual video footage. Edoardo got involved in a crash along with, among others, Irishman Mullen and Belarusian Koshevoy. That is what he told a staff member himself. Right after, an ambulance took him to a local medical center. His main discomfort was a severe chest pain.

Diagnosis

One X-ray later, Edoardo was diagnosed with a fractured rib. The injury will keep him off the bike for a bit less than one month, until early June.

Message for the fans

Edoardo is doing well at the moment and has left you guys a message:

That's an amazing win. Stage + Pink Jersey. Wherever happens in the rest of the Giro, it will be already a good debut in the Giro for the team.

I guess that Zardini's DNF is about CyaTroll striking back

Edit: I was just a minute late with my message after the injury report came outRolling Eyes

Amazing win, a bit thanks to soft racing though. We've achieved our sponsor goal so Izagirre's GC is our next concern.

Not sure if you meant debut as in first participation or start to this edition. This surely isn't our first participation here, you could read a summary of last year on this page (https://pcmdaily.com/forum/viewthread....st_1185229). Smile

Totally missed Zardini's crash myself, but Cyanide's not to blame for everything. Pfft

I meant about team's first Giro, because I forgot that last year you rode it.

It's always Cyanide fault Grin

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/qYyEjqT.png
Three guys attacked soon, and nobody stood in their way. Piotr Kirpsza, Jimmy Duquennoy and Sylvester Rio showed the Hincapie Racing Team, Vérandas Willems and Team Jamis jerseys respectively. The gap never was promising, teams that brough a sprinter timed the chase perfectly.
i.imgur.com/4999Kvx.png
The three were caught five kilometers from the line. Molano chose the wheel of Romain Cardis, as both jumped on the back of Sunweb's train for Kittel. Degenkolb left the front and Rohde was the last to do his job.
i.imgur.com/ZAxDyMD.png
All of Molano's energy had been drained whilst he was simply sitting in one's wheel. He'd finish way down the field, Kittel won ahead of Cardis.

At the same time doing very well at Tour of California

Congratulations

Our First Ever Day in Pink
i.imgur.com/mytSQow.png
First of all, let's take a brief moment to enjoy this splendid sight while it lasts. And truth it is: from time to time, pictures are worth 1000 words.
i.imgur.com/fxUEy4W.png
Our first ever day in pink started off with a five man breakaway created by Gilbert, Gradek, Lecuisinier, Nathan Brown and Sterbini. Exactly like in the last couple of stages, the gap would never reach the point where it could have become promising. The pack was running the whole show.
i.imgur.com/04Zjvdu.png
Trek and Katusha led the pack going up the climb. Maybe their leaders, Craddock and Quintana respectively, had revealed their legs were good today. Ochoa had only little strength left and told the others not to wait for him if he were to get left behind by the bunch on the upcoming hills.
i.imgur.com/QEu06N3.png
More than 120 riders survived the Vibo Valentina climb until a big chunk hit the asphalt in the descent. It was a small miracle no GC contenders were involved in the crash which brought down 60 riders, more or less.
i.imgur.com/PByDaBZ.png
The pack was thinned out by the efforts of Katusha. Still Vuillermoz felt like it wasn't going fast enough. The attack came 6.6 kms from the top, and Katusha didn't try to reel the Frenchman back in. Izagirre came to the front himself, in a long attempt to keep the advantage manageable.
i.imgur.com/aqVnpiD.png
Just over the top Izagirre created a tiny gap as Vuillermoz had started to go slower. But, had Izagirre already managed to get close enough?
i.imgur.com/70bmoZx.png
Less than 20" as we're inside the last 1000 meters. Vuillermoz seemed to be running out of stamina only a few seconds early. Go get him Ion!
i.imgur.com/LgPmgbG.png
Heartbreak for Vuillermoz, back-to-back stage victories for us! We may have lost a pink jersey, but Izagirre's first win of the season makes up for that. We continue without having a guy in the overall top 10 though.

He's definitely in great shape, I'd dare to say he's racing better than he was last year at this point. Ochoa's form is decreasing, it's logical he lost the jersey so soon. At least our GC leader is doing well too. Smile

Defending the Jersey
i.imgur.com/P23wRs4.png
The initial five man breakaway approached the final difficulty of the day with a 1'20" gap. Monitor Pass (14.9 kms, 6.6% avg) was that difficulty.
i.imgur.com/5mXpI8A.png
The American Ian Boswell attacked from the foot. Being 13'21" down in the overall standings must have been a massive letdown for a pre-race favorite. Because of his current GC position, Vandenborre decided not to react because Boswell definitely wasn't a danger to him. Responding to each and every acceleration could cost him lots more than the stage.
i.imgur.com/mTPOLxh.png
Tim Roe tried to go with Boswell at first, but did not have the necessary legs. An intensive pursuit later, Malaysia's Muhamad Othman caught up with Roe. Boswell had almost 2' on the duo and 2'40" on Vandenborre. There were still 4.4 climbing kilometers left to be done for the chasers.
i.imgur.com/KCSGujs.png
Five kilometers before the line, Vandenborre upped his own pace. His main rivals in the GC could not follow him, except for GC third Briganti.
i.imgur.com/eGo1uoe.png
Boswell landed a fully deserved stage win that made him move into GC 8th. Two whole minutes elapsed, no other riders had crossed the finish.
i.imgur.com/9JBPebv.png
