Chaves seems the likeliest to me though, for a first timer. Given Orica's team and his recent results. No repeat for Kruijswijk I'm afraid.
He's TDF-ing, which I'm still a bit split on. Adam Yates riding Giro with Simon just in the last 24 hours switching to Tour to help Chaves who might only comeback from injury for Dauphine, I'm excited about that after Vuelta last year. The real Chaves hype is La Vuelta with both the Yates brothers after over three years of waiting <3
Guess Adam can push the top 5 Giro for sure, but this year rather than progressing in being able to hold the wheel with bigger guns it'd be nice to stay at the climbing ability that got him 4th but all he was able to do apart from things like the inflatable banner stage attack earlier in the race was wait until Froome goes in the last kilometre and be consistently best of the rest rider (nothing outright wrong and it worked), likely from Giro -> Vuelta or even pre-Giro it'd be nice to see him be able to make stuff for himself a bit more (maybe he already can in Giro/Vuelta, we'll see). Simon was fantastic in the Vuelta in service of Chaves and though the Tour is a different beast (higher quality field, Sky Train stages) it'd be nice to see a similar dynamic of him having just enough freedom to go for the odd stage and be part of daring moves and end up 6th (maybe not but yeah ) but also help Chaves to the podium.
As for going to Sky, please sweet merciful everloving god no

You avatar makes me wanna watch Mortirolo or Zoncolan stages from 2010. Good lord an amazing race that Giro was and Basso on Zoncolan, grinding everyone into dust and making Evans cry. <3 |

Anybody remember this stage from that very same year? 262 km pure evilness by Zomegnan in freezing rain. Probably the most epic stage along with Gardeccia the year late in 11r: https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/G...Val_di_Fas
And this Mortirolo stage from 2010: https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/G..._18_Aprica
Giro hype! Amazing timegaps. |

And Landa will probably be Sky Train-ing for Thomas! That leaves us with a Frenchman and TVG (!!)

I have little doubt that Landa will absolutely demolish Thomas when they actually hit proper mountains, so I don't think that. |

I think that's what Porte used to think about Froome earlier too

Difference only being Landa top level is miles above Geraint Thomas whose best result in a GT is 15th. The only steep climb he has faced yet was Lo Port in Catalunya, in very good shape and as the captain, where he cracked. A neo-pro put 30 seconds into him. And that was a relatively easy stage beforehand, a mono climb stage which suits Thomas well. And not super hard everything considered (the climb to Lo Port).
The climbs in Trentino and Terminillo in T-A haven't been steep enough. Wait till Blockhaus, Stelvio etc in the Giro, that will be fun.
Edit: I think he will survive Etna decently well because its a climb where its hard to make a huge difference, but Blockhaus is a completely different beast on stage 9. And if Thomas doesn't crack completely if he by that point isn't out of the GC on stage 16 over double Stifilserjoch, Im gonna change my avatar for 1 year to Thomas (losing +5 minutes to the best GC-rider).

If Porte beats Froome in Romandie, Porte could win the TDF as this is as much mental than anything. Also, would love to see Froome be domestique for Porte in the Tour repaying all the work a Porte did for him. I know neither of these things will happen, but as a Porte fan it would be great . |

Porte winning the TDF would be quite something! But that's unlikely. Meanwhile, TVG is almost on the verge of losing his Giro leadership to Rohan Dennis! That will probably not happen, but what a step-down from a rider touted as the next big American champion.

Well this question has been answered
Anyone else with a chance later this year? TDF looks doubtful, maybe Chaves or Landa at the Vuelta...

Porte will win the Tour (Froome will crash out), so he is next GT champion.

Froome wins of course, because he's Froome and he is in top shape in Tour!
Porte always has a day where he fails.
Quintana has already lost after the first mountain stage and is too bad on time trials.
Contador is weak and overrated.

Looking at his Dauphiné, I bet Benoot would be on the table if Alakagom were still here |
