Good start by Tinajero and I hope Izagirre isn't too injured either
Ion felt a bit tired after this stage, but should be fine. Hopefully he will be tomorrow, as he's a vital link in this TTT squad.

We have a leader peaking for this race and an extremely weak field, so we''ll only be satisfied with nothing less than a podium.

Amgen Tour of California (2.HC) Stage 1/8, 173.4 kms
The first breakaway of this 2019 edition consisted of four riders: Steven Lammertink, Matthew Brammeier, Eugenio Alafaci and David Williams. LottoNL-Jumbo had a awful start to the stage. First team leader Boswell crashed. He returned just to suffer a new crash. Being severely grazed, he caught up with the pack. Once again. Silvio Herklotz, one of his main domestiques, couldn't continue though. First abandon, after only 60 km. The break of the day ended on the climb combo halfway the stage. The pace remained high until the next climb. The cat. 1 Kneeland climb saw Carter Jones tearing apart the pack. Only Sam Vandenborre and Steff Hermans kept his wheel. Our men could have bridged but let the others chase. Those who tried couldn't do it, hence why the trio easily set sail. Cooperation stalled in the front group, and BMC's Briganti joined them. A single major pull by Vandenborre at the climb after the intermediate sprint caused Jones to get dropped. All others sat at least 1'20" behind. Sam had some incredible legs today, and his pace was just too fast for both Hermans and Briganti. He left them behind near Anderson Ranch's summit. It did not seem like anybody could still deny him the stage win. Vandenborre had no problems conquering the last difficulty of the day, Liscom Hill. While he was taming the 1.9 kilometer climb with its slopes constantly at over 10%, literally everbody refused to work together with each other. Sam would easily triumph, the gap being multiple minutes. Thanks Jakstar, nice to have you stop by! No bragging but the win itself wasn't that difficult. The field is rather weak and +5 daily form is not a disadvantage either.
Could be the case, but so much can happen along the way road.
Some days, everything goes according to plan.

A good start could be a half-won battle, but there's still at least another half left.

Looks like a rather big time loss indeed, but Quintana (KAT) lost even more time and Landa (MOV) lost 52". Want to point out that the only Pinot has an interesting advantage after today.

Amgen Tour of California (2.HC) Stage 2/8, 161.5 kms
Novo Nordisk's Cesare Benedetti survived the longest of the breakaway riders. He was reeled in on the banks of the Sacramento river, 25 kms from the line. The earlier climbs had given birth to a mouse as a nearly complete bunch hit the long descent to Redding, including Marcel Kittel. Our sprint train for Molano opened a small gap on one of the false flat streets in the city of Redding. Sadly, Molano somehow had been forced out of Cortes' wheel. We could not wait, Cortes prepared for the sprint. We lost a bit of pace in the wide last corner and saw Rohde passing by, out of nowhere. He had Kittel, who looked strong, chained to his wheel. Kittel easily held off Cardis and got what he flew to the US for: a stage win. Cortes eventually did great and came home in third position, three spots ahead of Molano, who'd done very well too, not having had help. We didn't expect too much from the flat stages here tbh but this was not bad.
