Gilbert would be great at Roubaix with he's current condition.
Sagan is always favorite..and will be at sunday Roubaix..van Avermaet, Tommeke with all Quickstep lineup, Trek guys. Damn that crash with vanmarcke today. He is made for Roubaix.
And always there will be few new names to come out after Roubaix finish. Who has been earlier hidden behind some top 10 places.
Will be fun as always.
2 races I can always enjoy most at cycling season..Roubaix and Giro.

Just in case you missed it or forgot in the excitement here's Gilbert in the wind before they even hit the Kapelmuur!

This Gilbert COULD win Roubaix, 2011 one couldn't. He has a bigger engine now and can just go on and on supposedly without losing too much. The younger Gilbert didn't quite have that same stamina (look at Flanders 2011, probably the best example on just that), but was incredibly explosive and could beat everyone in the world on a bad day on a Colnago from 1996 on the last hill.

Terpstra and especially Boonen will be better bets tho, but you never know.

Amazing ride from Gilbert. Huge slice of luck when Sagan took down the three riders who could have caught him. However, sometimes when you ride like that you deserve that luck.

Roll on Roubaix Smile

Great race overall and deserved win for Gilbert, who has super spring, the biggest star so far next to GVA. I dont doubt GVA would grab a triple if not for the Sagans crash, the strong group was destined to catch fading Gilbert. Still an epic performance from Phil, congrats. And the crash seemed totally fault of Sagan, he should not ride so close to the barriers, even his technique cant save him everytime.

Only thing that is sad is level of cycling discussion here on Daily, like 5 people all over again, with the hype for different riders all over again, depends who is currently better...the actual racing used to be discussed here, now like 75% of posts are only repetitive cheering for favourite riders...

What do people make of Boonen's swansong to date?
He's been unlucky in parts but also hasn't really shown any form which would make him a real contender at Roubaix. Has he really got a chance against the likes of Sagan, GVA, Gilbert and Terpstra this year?

I'm picking Kristoff as a dark horse. Coming into some good form without standing out too much to make him a massively marked man.

Well, as I said in a previous post, if Terpstra got back, I think Boonen could've come back as well. He was looking really good until his double mechanical. Though I think he's saving himself for Roubaix, which is probably the hardest race to win, so not sure if it's a smart move.

And if he has back luck in Roubaix again, he should not retire, it would be shit to end such a career like this.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Boonen would have probably marked Sagan/GVA/Naesen trio on Taaienberg which could have slowed down them because Sagan and GVA might not have paced Boonen all the way. Also the ascent of Taaienberg was really weird all people in front disappeared and Sagan was just at the front with Naesen on his wheel and GVA trying to bridge. Perhaps there was a crash in Taaienberg and Sagan just attacked when he realized he was alone.

And Gilbert was the leader in Ronde I think. And his attack on Kwaremont wasn't planned and when Phil heard nothing from radio he just kept going. So Boonen marked the others in the rest of the race till his double puncture.

Come to the Womens cycling thread. Only one person talks there but it's devoid of rampant fanboyism Pfft

I repeat: Boonen is the favourite for Roubaix. Its a completely different race to all the other cobbled races and he is surely a lot better here than the likes of Gilbert and GVA.

So yes. he got a big chance. It looks like to me that this is the year that he is closest to his 2012 form, despite the results not showing.

Sagan crashed because of the jacket in the public, not because of the barriers

So when was he better, 13, 14, 15 or 16?

Not from my view. It's inconclusive but it looks like either his wheel hit the barrier or his handlebar hit the advertising banner.

The jacket was completely innocent and just got mixed up in the aftermath.

Even if it was the jacket, Sagan shouldn't have been that close to the barrier.

Is not working for me the "Twitter button", but here you can watch that Sagan handlebar touch the jacket, and after that his wheel jumps over the barrier

https://twitter.c...8194673664

And I'm not saying that is not Sagan fault. Is obvious that if he was riding the other side of the road, he would not have crashed

Well, from that perspective, it could've also been Naesen that hit the jacket, or the wind, that blasted it around...

Still, it was 100% Sagans fault, riding on that spot.

I would say 13-14-15-16 he just had stuff happening that prevented him from being 100%. The 2017 Boonen is the best you'll ever see again.

And I don't care if Sagan hit a barrier or a spectator, he just should not have been there.

I haven't seen that view before, only the views that were a bit obstructed from the Eurosport coverage.

Either way though, Sagan shouldn't have been that close.
