 Amstel Gold Race 2019 (WT)  Limburg, 251.8 kms With the Brabantse Pijl now over and won by Dimension Data's Mathieu Van der Poel, attention turns to the first of the 3 Ardennes classics. The Amstel Gold Race is the traditional curtain-raiser of the triptych and the high pointof the Netherlands' cycling calendar. Whereas Philippe Gilbert used to dominate here all eyes will be on dual winner Alaphilippe today. A 6-man breakaway was formed surprisingly fast. In there were Tomio, Nardelli, Juul-Jensen, van Beusichem, Rota and Aidan van Niekerk. The gap would go up to a max of 8', before beginning to shrink, very slowly. Fast-forward to the steep Keutenberg 60 kms from the finish. The pace was dictated by Beñat Intxausti, who reduced the advantage to 1'50". Nardelli and Tomio were the first to get dropped from the breakaway. A small advantage of 1'30" for the other four, and 27 kms left in the race. The long-awaited attack of Alaphilippe came just after the penultimate ascent of the Cauberg. He flew by Juul-Jensen, the final survivor of the break with six kms to go. The others were literally nowhere to be seen. Adam Yates and Slagter launched a counterattack inside the final three kms. It seemed like the two of them were about to fight for 2nd though. The two gave everything at the final Cauberg climb, but didn't gain one second on Alaphilippe. No-one managed to bridge back to them either. Kwiatkowski attacked the reduced 3rd group in the slight descent before the red kite. Guerreiro was our only rider left near the front and surely seemed to be our most fresh rider to contest the sprint for a 5th place. Alaphilippe had whole seas of time to celebrate his third victory in only four participations. Aged only 26 he may already be on his way to equal or even beat Jan Raas' record of 5 wins here in the city of Valkenburg. Guerreiro beat Coquard, Betancur and Fernández for fifth place, while both Ochoa and I. Izagirre had to settle for a spot outside the top 10. La Flèche Wallonne 2019 (WT) Province de Liège, 197.6 kms Not only is La Flèche Wallonne the shortest of the Ardennes classics, it is also the least hilly one. It has been years since the last time the race wasn't decided in the final kilometer, and now that Alejandro Valverde's finally started to feel the weight of his age, a lot of people are pointing to Alaphilippe when asked who is going to kick away at the Mur de Huy. A small break this time with only Koretzky, Steff Hermans and Nemykin in there: a promising climber, an averagely quick sprinter and a below-average allrounder. The maximal map was around six and a half mins. A rather low pace in the peloton all day long allowed 192 riders to keep up, even after having dealt with the second Mur de Huy ascent. The trio out front had 1'39" with 33 kilometers left. Nibali then set a higher one. Fabio Aru attacked at Côte d'Amay, the third to last of today's hills. The IAM Cycling team however quickly chased down him and some that had responded to his attack. The leading three had 43" left, 17 kms to race. Chávarri used a short moment of hesitation to attack. Nemykin had lost contact with the break and our guy had to bridge a gap of 35 seconds. Eder reeled in Hermans and Koretzky, near the banner of the last five kilometers. He had created a more than promising advantage of 1'03". Chávarri left the others behind and crossed the bridge over the Meuse on his own. But the peloton was really raging, and his gap decreasing. Hermans and Koretzky were caught on that same bridge, where one of the Yates brothers accelerated, closely followed by Kwiatkowski and top favorite Alaphilippe. Chávarri was about to hit the Mur for the last time. Six hundred meters left and Chávarri still had 16". Could he resist and not collapse either? A. Yates and Alaphilippe started their sprint early... But Chávarri had also conserved some energy and triumphed atop the Mur de Huy after a perfectly executed attack. As Guerreiro and Ochoa sprinted to a top 10 spot too, Alaphilippe and Wellens scored a podium. We've already had a great classics campaign so far, hopefully we can make the sponsor happy one more time
As for Chávarri, he'll be leading our team at the Presidential Tour of Turkey, which starts today as well. Mainly because Ion Izagirre is too tired to race Liège or Turkey. I decided to let him and Vandenborre ride Romandie before they peak at the Giro and the Tour of California respectively.
So Chávarri can finally go for the GC in a stage race without a time trial before resting a bit.

Liège - Bastogne - Liège 2019 (WT) Province de Liège, 250.0 kms After today, the curtain will fall on the 2019 Spring Classics. But before that, a Monument is still looking for its winner. And it's going to have to be a real costaud. La Doyenne's both the longest and hilliest race of the Ardennes week, and the local weather forecasts look worse than awful. Only four riders in the break of the day: Stig Broeckx, Figueiredo, Bartl and Santoro. Between the raindrops they'd collect a maximal gap of 9'. The lion's share of the hills came in the final 85 kms, the opener of the zone being Côte de Wanne. The break was still together and had 3'43". Padilla set the pace at Côte de la Haute-Levée as the advantage of the four came down brutally. To only 1'16" with still 72 kms left in this race. The escapees were caught at Col du Rosier, as we had 48 riders left in the bunch. A second group, with some big guns, like Vakoč sat at 1'34". France's champion Thibaut Pinot and Klever, among others, suffered a painful crash. Our rider could carry on, but he struggled and continued at a personally adapted pace. The Ecuadorian would conclude in 111th. The pace slowed somewhat, which allowed a lot of riders to come back. Atop La Redoute 151 riders started the ultimate 34 kilometers together. Omar Fraile got tired of the laziness in the bunch and accelerated with 23 kms left. No reactions as he was approaching la Rôche-aux-faucons. At the climb itself, Fraile extended his gap to 53". Still no other moves. Kwiatkowski attacked with 16 kms left. Only Julian Alaphilippe followed. They quickly caught up with Fraile, and left him behind as well. With la Côte de Saint-Nicolas just around the corner, the duo had a gap of 35". At the Saint-Nicolas climb a seven separated itself from the peloton. In there sat Aru, Mohoric, S.Yates, Fuglsang, Valverde and Vandenborre. However the latter had troubles trying to keep up all the way to the top. Mohoric attacked the E2 at the final climb to the line in Ans. Just before the red kite, he had brought down the advantage of the 2 leaders to 9". The group with Vandenborre sat 30" back on the leading duo, and was racing for 4th. Fortunately Sam seemed to have got his second wind as more experienced riders such as Valverde and Fuglsang hit a little wall. The cameraman somehow didn't catch how Kwiatkowski strongly kicked away as he won ahead of Alaphilippe and Mohoric. About a minute later Vandenborre narrowly lost a sprint for fourth, against Bauke Mollema. Beñat Intxausti to retire at the end of 2019 Shortly after concluding Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 62nd place, dual Monument winner Beñat Intxausti has officially spread the word: 2019 will be the ultimate year of his fruitful career in pro cycling.
After turning pro in 2007 with the continental team Nicolás Mateos, the Basque went on to ride for Saunier Duval and its successor teams Scott and Fuji, Euskaltel-Euskadi and Movistar before joining Caja Rural back in 2016. Ever since things have taken a phenomenal turn for the better.
Intxausti won the 16th stage in the 2013 Giro d'Italia and claimed 8th in the general classification after having worn the pink jersey for one day. In 2016 he won his second Grand Tour stage at La Vuelta a España, as he also concluded the race in GC 10th, for the third time in six editions. But 2017 would become the real crowning glory of the Basque's career. He started off his second year at Caja Rural with an early win in Murcia, came 3rd, 7th and 2nd in Andalusia, Catalonia and the Basque Country respectively, as he won a stage and the points jersey in the latter race.
Winning a Monument racing for a pro continental team however, that is a totally different story. Still that is what happened at that year's edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, when he surprisingly outsmarted big guns like Gilbert, Alaphilippe, Valverde, Mollema, Pozzovivo, Pinot and Rui Costa.
And winning two Monuments in one and the same year, that is an even bigger story. In Lombardia Intxausti dropped everyone at the last climb and dealt with race leader Rafał Majka in the last kilometers of the day. The next season was more silent, maybe because of the age starting to kick in. After stage wins in Catalonia and the Basque Country he ended his year nicely: la Vuelta's KoM jersey and the win at Tre Valli Varisine.
Goodbye bike, hello team car?
Intxausti's had a contract with Ruralvía until 2020, but both the Spanish team and the rider have confirmed the deal has been shortened by one year.
Sources within the team have also confirmed that Intxausti's very likely to stay with the World Tour side, performing a diverse role off the bike.

Intxausti had a great career, with that outstanding 2017.
Winning Liege and Lombardia in the same year is something that only other 2 riders did it in the history: Merckx (twice) and Argentin. He deserved to be in a hypothetical cycling HoF
