Vuelta al País Vasco (WT) i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png
Stage 4/6, 148.4 kms
i.imgur.com/tUNpV9O.png
The second summit finish stage is shorter and less demanding than the first, with less climbs in general and an easier final one to end the day.
i.imgur.com/78JkyLQ.png
Tens of riders tried but only eight got into the break: Brändle, Busato, Schwarzmann, Vangstad, T. Ludvigsson, Rubio and once CX world champions Wout Van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel. A strong group but the peloton easily kept control, giving nothing more than 2' to them.
i.imgur.com/EtNtBpH.png
The eight got scattered quickly, way before the stage conclusion. At the third categorised climb, Andrew Talansky accelerated from the bunch.
i.imgur.com/hdUe5zT.png
In the descent of that same third climb, van der Poel continued on his own. Only Brändle could catch back up, the other six were out of sight.
i.imgur.com/GRC7i7t.png
While the pack was rushing through that very descent, world champion Gallopin and GC third Alaphilippe got involved in a crash. Both top 10 contenders close to several minutes of potential time loss, and two less domestiques for team leader Aru, who is the current leader of the GC.
i.imgur.com/F74ckBs.png
At the front Talansky joined van der Poel, while Brändle lost contact.
i.imgur.com/cXGO2Cx.png
Their ship would strand right at the second intermediate sprint, where Barbero narrowly bagged some vital points for the points classification.
i.imgur.com/XpjZulm.png
And he managed to do so at the last intermediate sprint of the day too.
i.imgur.com/A6IXDKw.png
Nothing happened before the final climb. Once there Adam Yates had to put in everything to keep up with, Jesús Herrada's attack. Katusha's Nairo Quintana tried to follow the latter as well. This trio grew a small advantage over the pack where our team leaders were keeping up well.
i.imgur.com/koNeypO.png
The last kilometer was a short murito. Herrada was still leading, ahead of Yates, but the Englishman seemed to be closing in. Behind them the peloton had bridged as Guerreiro looked the stronger guy of the team.
i.imgur.com/OqV7cUu.png
Adam Yates came very close but couldn't deny Herrada the stage win. Guerreiro beat Quintana for 3rd place as Aru keeps the yellow jersey.

Stage 5/6, 179.1 kms
i.imgur.com/NZQitRs.png
This fifth and penultimate stage is harder than its profile may look. The climbs feature steep slopes, so GC shifts can't be excluded beforehand.
i.imgur.com/rr1A5ke.png
It took awhile for a break to be formed but before the second mountain sprint 5 guys got a gap: Jacobs, Talansky, Hector Saez, Vangstad and Schwarzmann. The maximal advantage was about three mere minutes.
i.imgur.com/M47UdJl.png
The BMC duo of Jacobs and Talansky left the other riders behind at the longest climb. The pack had started closing in already so they had to do something. The remaining three slowed down and quickly got reeled in.
i.imgur.com/sv9QEh3.png
A heavily reduced pack reached the summit shortly after the BMC duo.
i.imgur.com/3HekH04.png
In the descent a crash took stage winner Jesús Herrada, Ulissi and GC second Simon Yates. Meanwhile, the last escapees were reeled back in.
i.imgur.com/1qgqQYj.png
Valverde, Pinot and Poels dropped out of the pack to wait for the British team leader, the Dutchman sacrificing his own ambition and his GC 5th.
i.imgur.com/AdzKK15.png
Chávarri struggled due to the speedy pace in the first group and would lose contact as the false flat after the fourth climb cost him his position.
i.imgur.com/UTj7xr1.png
Pinot and Valverde brought Simon Yates back, along with some others. However Chávarri couldn't keep up with them either. He missed out on rejoining the front group, as the cold & rain had taken much out of him.
i.imgur.com/veMM44R.png
Back at the front Guerreiro tried to anticipate at the last climb knowing that he would not be able to respond to attacks. At first he was alone...
i.imgur.com/05VnbLW.png
Kwiatkowski and Aru caught up and left Ruben behind a kilometer from the top. He looked behind him, and saw some others, closing in as well.
i.imgur.com/Gmen3qz.png
Aru and Kwiatkowski were both out of reach, but Guerreiro got stuck in the wheel of Mollema and Alaphilippe, group 3 was another 1'30" down.
i.imgur.com/xYtUve0.png
The two leaders sprinted for the stage, and their sprint was as exciting as the entire of the rained off second to last day in the Basque Country.
i.imgur.com/dmInNuC.png
The Italian (overall leader) showed off why he is the guy in that jersey. Sadly he'd also become the new points leader by 1 point over Barbero.
i.imgur.com/FrfElFr.png
Ruben had big troubles to keep up with his companions but a last huge effort resulted in him being granted the same time at the line. The blue young leader's jersey also became his due to the off-day of Chávarri...
i.imgur.com/VsFxYaF.png
The latter came home together with Barbero, as both lost 8' on the E1.

Good points for Guerreiro and the team with that 9th place.

Also, what an horrible TT for Aru. Luckily for him, he had almost 2 minutes on Kwiato

Incredible comeback from Guerreiro indeed Smile turns out the time lost at stage 1 cost us a GC podium and a sponsor goal though Frown

Aru suffered yet he's the deserved winner. Hopefully for him he'll shine in the Ardennes and at Le Tour too Wink

Paris - Roubaix (WT) i.imgur.com/OXwpbMJ.png
258.4 kms, 28 cobbled sections
i.imgur.com/8Fz9Ju2.png
Dust, crashes and an unmatched number of cobbles, that's what awaits the 200 riders at the Hell of the North. Classics specialists are eager to (hopefully) strike one last time ahead of a well-deserved period of rest.
i.imgur.com/cM7soFL.png
Too many attacks to count yet only 4 guys in the breakaway. Krigbaum, Navardauskas, Edmondson and Gidich opened a gap of 8'30" in the first hundred kms, before the inaugural of 28 cobbled sections in Troisvilles.
i.imgur.com/sNtSsgl.png
Three full minutes of the advantage melted away over the next 50 kms. The only noteworthy thing was Stybar and Kristoff suffering a crash just minutes away from the cobbled Trouée d'Arenberg, in the Forest of the same name. The Norwegian, who won 2 of the 3 latest editions, had no troubles in rejoining the bunch along with the Czech national champion.
i.imgur.com/DeI8EWc.png
The ever-tricky and extremely irregular cobbles reduced the breakaway by half when Edmondson and Gidich crashed. The two that escaped the fall couldn't wait and continued together, defending a gap of 5 minutes.
i.imgur.com/SVtNZ87.png
Navardauskas had to let Krigbaum go. As the Dane was forced to go on his own he saw his advantage shrinking more and more. At the cobbles of secteur Beuvry-la-Forêt à Orchies he had still 1'22", with 65 kms left.
i.imgur.com/BSWliSm.png
After he was reeled in 25 silent kilometers dawned. Benoot accelerated with 35 kms to go. Some followed to create a gap but they were caught within the next 10 kms. The compressed pack then contained 25 riders.
i.imgur.com/1S9Zkmr.png
Terpstra was the next to attack but his one came to nothing either. One 5-star section to go and nothing's been decided after a rather dull race.
i.imgur.com/VpaZELY.png
At the atrocious cobblestones of Carrefour de l'Arbre, the expected try failed to occur. However the E1 was not freewheeling at all. Cortes lost contact but Lature looked strong, picking a position near the very front.
i.imgur.com/tGZ2K74.png
Rowe, Sénéchal, Helling and Böger got dropped before the Velodrome as well. Benoot set the pace there and gave the ones at the back of the 18-man group big difficulties. Lature now had a single goal in mind: to remain glued to his wheel, as things started to look very bright for him.
i.imgur.com/5pEUnzi.png
Benoot went so fast that only Lature and Terpstra could stay near him. The other 15 potential winners had very few time to bridge, as the final 1000 meters were approaching, fast. Could Lature surprise everyone?
i.imgur.com/olehGug.png
The others realised they're about to sprint for the third and last podium place only. Right at the same time Lature wanted to leave the wheel of Benoot but he didn't get the chance. Benoot had this, only 500 m to go.
i.imgur.com/9ALkqD8.png
Lature had to bow his head for Benoot and watch how he won his first cobble, pulling off a great RvV-Roubaix double like Kristoff did last year and Boonen did in 2012. Lature secured a big second place, while Sep Vanmarcke reached the podium for the fourth consecutive year without winning a single time. And so the 2019 cobbled season came to its end.
