Vuelta a Burgos

I was back to my favourite cycling nation after a considerable gap. The warm climate has always suited my riding style. No wonder, having grown up in such weather. This would be my first start in this race and I was looking towards making an impact at the top of the GC. I was picked as the leader of the team.

Stage 1 was a flat start. No major incidents took place as the favourites preferred to ride in the group. I stayed safe while teammate Fabio Silvestre came home in 5th place.

Stage 2 was an almost carbon copy of the first and the result was similar. A bunch sprint decided the winner with Egor Silin taking the stage. We stayed in the pack.

Stage 3 was where the race started to get exciting. The favourites rode in the peloton till the last climb, where the breakaway was caught, I was able to pull away from the pack for a brief while in the lower slopes. I was caught by the chasing pack of about 30 riders and settled in to finish mid-pack. Lilian Calmejane took 6th place for us as Gorkha Izagirre took the win.

Stage 4 saw me try another cheeky attack, this time with 6 km to go. I was unsuccessful once again as almost the entire pack finished together. Fabio Silvestre finished 4th to continue the good race for us.

The queen stage on Stage 5 lived up the excitement that was expected of it. Jesus Del Pino got into the break for us. The break was caught with 15 km to go as a group of 17 formed containing most the favourites. I built up a lead again, with 5 km to go. Unfortunately, once again, I could not keep the lead, as three riders caught and overtook me. I hung on to 4th place, finishing in the same spot in the final GC as well. Ruben Fernandez took the stage but second place Castroviejo took the GC on count-back.

Despite my best efforts on stages 3 and 4, the GC was decided on stage 5 and I wasn't quite able to hang on at the front. However, 4th in the GC and a podium in the U25s is a decent result from this race. I head to the colder climes of Norway in my next race. Hope to see you there...

Nice race - a GC top 5 is always worth the effort.

Yes it is Tamijo and it is with that good feeling that I head into the Arctic Race of Norway, a race absolutely not suited to my strengths.

Arctic Race of Norway

I will not bore you with details of this race, as basically, from my point of view, nothing much happened! Krieger took 4th place on the sprint in stage 1 while I got myself a 5th place finish on the slightly uphill finish of the last stage, stage 4. Besides this, I rode in the pack throughout and enjoyed the view.

September

Just two race days in September, but in different continents. First up, I was jetting off to Canada as a late replacement.

Grand Prix de Quebec

Coming in as a last minute replacement, I wasn't fully prepared for this race. I was given a free role and advised to ride my own race without worrying much about what was happening around me. Van der Heijden joined the break for us asI stayed in the pack, waiting for opportunities later. I attacked out of the pack with 95 km to go and caught the break soon after. At this point we had a four minute lead over the peloton. I attacked again with less than 30 km to go and went away solo as the others got caught. I had a minute and a half lead with 20 km to go. I was finally caught by the largely diminished peloton with 12 km to go. I got dropped from the lead group but till managed a top 20. Chris Froome won with a late attack out of the front group.

Grand Prix de Wallonie

I was back in Belgium a week, starting at Wallonia. I was surprisingly given a free role but I had made up my mind to target a win in this race. I stayed in the pack through most of the race and was protected by a couple of teammates. This gave me further confidence to go for it at the end. I went away from the front of the peloton just as the break was caught on the second climb, with 10 km left. The lead group caught up to me soon after. A group of nine riders, including me, went away from the others with 4 km to go. We reached the finishing straight together and it came down to a sprint. I finished in 3rd place to cap off an excellent race. Tim Declerq was the fastest in the sprint.

A good month heading into the last one for me representing Roompot. A good podium finish in Belgium keeps my spirits high as I try to finish off the year on a high. Meet you again in a couple of weeks.

October

And so starts my last month with Roompot. Three one day races will finish off my stint with this wonderful team. First up, we went to Germany and signed off with two back to back races in France.

Sparkassen Munsterland Giro

A free role was alotted to me in this race and I decided to have some fun. After not being allowed to go away into the break at the start, I attacked out of the pack with 140 km still to ride and caught up to the 5 man break. We built up a maximum lead of five and a half minutes as the peloton seemed determined to keep our lead in check. Three riders attacked out of the break with 45 km to go, when our lead had dropped to less than three minutes. I chased them with help from Bonnafond while the other rider sat up and waited for the pack. We couldn't catch the three up ahead and were caught by the pack with 8 km to go, and then dropped. The peloton caught up with the rest of the break before the finish. The sprint finish was won by Jakub Mareczko while Fabio Silvestre got 8th place for us.

Cobbles awaited us on the route. I was given a free role again but this time I stayed in the pack. I wasn't very confident of being able to sustain my legs till the end in the break on cobbles. The cobbled sections came well beyond the halfway mark> the first section itself saw the decisive move. The break was already caught before this point and a group of 14 riders went away from the pack. Dylan van Zijl was Roompot's only representative. I kept going backward as the race progressed, finishing almost 8 minutes behind the eventual winner. Further attacks in the lead group saw a group of five sprint to the line to decide the winner. Olivier Naesen took home the prize. Dylan van Zijl came 9th for us.

Paris Tours

My last race for Roompot brought me my first experience of finishing at the Champs Elysses! Perhaps, this is symbolic of the impending step up that I'm about to make into the World Tour...
It was quite ironic that I was assigned as a helper on my last outing after having led the team in quite a few important races. Nevertheless, I was happy just seeing out this race and moving on rather than throw a tantrum. Maybe this was a way of the team showing their displeasure at my leaving or maybe this was the team telling me that I'll have to get used to this role a bit more after I make my move.
The race turned out to be a dull affair for me and the team. The bunch sprint saw none of my teammates able to challenge for the win, Reguigui's 31st being our best position. Wouter Wippert won at the hallowed finish on Champs Elysses with Demare and Manzin finishing in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

A poor set of results to finish off my stint with Roompot. The races were not to my liking and I wasn't expecting a whole lot better. Stay tuned as I will come back in a couple of days to look back on my two years here and to look forward to my impending switch to Lotto. Till then, enjoy the off-season...

2017 Season Recap

My second year in the PCT was an eventful one. The biggest story of the year was my first stage win achieved on Stage 5 of the Vuelta a Andalucia! The best birthday gift that I've ever given myself. The rest of the year featured a couple of podiums and a couple of wins in the U25s.

The year also saw me debut in legendary races like the Amstel Gold Race, La Fleche Wallone, Romandie and Quebec. As a reward for my consistency and good performance, Lotto Soudal came calling and my dream of riding in the World Tour will be realised next year. Also, and by no means a small thing, I stayed injury free for the whole year. A relief after two horrendous injuries in the past two years.

And now for a well deserved rest...

As expected some bad results in the flat races.
Looking forward to some WT racing Smile

It's been a fruitful season, hopefully you can develop further in the WT next year Smile

WITH THE WORLD (TOUR) AT MY PEDALS

Not Quite a World Beater (Yet...)

It is two weeks now since the press conference announcing the new team that will represent Lotto Soudal for the 2018 season. It is hence two weeks that I've been living the dream on a daily basis...

The first week of training for the team was on flat roads, where we gently got back to race pace after the year end break. Things were looking good. I'd had my initiation with the team. I had to sing a local song as part of the process. I'm sure those who were present on that particular occasion can still hear a ringing in their ears! It felt too good to be true. Here I was, living my teenage dream, riding shoulder to shoulder and joking around off the bikes with World Tour bike riders.

Then week two came around and we headed to the mountains for altitude training. As always, I was determined to make a good first impression, after all, this was my preferred terrain. Like my move up from CT to PCT, the difference in training methods and the difference in rider abilities were stark. It took me some time to get used to the team's combined rhythm. How they attacked certain portions of the road, how they manoeuvred fast descents and how they bid their time in preparation for the perfect moment. The whole exercise was a masterclass in itself. And I felt like the luckiest boy alive!

I was riding with some of the best riders in the world at Lotto Soudal, as you can see for yourself here:

i.imgur.com/0t02eQa.jpg

Me being me, the constant nagging doubt of whether I'm good enough to ride at my current level never ceases. As you can see, I've improved a fair bit over the past year:

i.imgur.com/4oPOc2o.jpg

However, I'm not a world beater just yet. Lotto Soudal should be a great platform to get me there. This feels like the start something great...

Great to see Gilbert back in the Lotto team. WTF is Boonen doing there? Frown

Are you editing your stats in order to not develop so fast as everyone does in Pro Cyclist?

Nope, no editing. Just slowing down training intensity. I'm not sure how others do it, but I like how this is going tbh.

January

The first month of racing with the new team and in the World Tour. And where do you think I start off? That's right! Spain. It's good to be able to start on roads I especially like, given the situation. Only one race in January, and that's in the island of Mallorca.

Vuelta a Mallorca

I was chosen for a free role in this race. Louis Meintjes, Vuelta a Espana runner-up, was our team leader. This was his first race for Lotto too. It was a great learning experience, getting to know one of the best in the peloton from such close quarters. Our team had decent expectations from this race, going in with a strong team.

Stage 1 - This was a flat stage and I decided to stick to the peloton for this one. The early break was caught before the finish as the sprinters slugged it out for the win. Sam Bennett edged out Sagan for the win while former teammate Krieger picked up an impressive 3rd place for Roompot.

Stage 2 - I formed the breakaway with one other rider just after the early first climb of the day. We pulled out to a 5 minute lead but never had a free reign. We were caught quite early, with 55 km left. I managed to stay in the pack till 15 km to go. It all went downhill from there. I struggled with the race pace and ended up losing a massive 9 minutes on this medium difficulty stage. Davide Cimolai got 6th place for us while Sagan won the stage.

Stage 3 - Having seen the chance for a high finish evaporate on the previous stage, I decided to join the break once. This time there were a couple of other riders with me to start with but I managed to drop them all going up the first climb. From that time, I rode a lonely race at the front, picking up all the KOM points. The peloton never really chased hard, aware that I was no threat to the GC. They kept reducing the gap as the finish line approached. As I passed below the red kite, I had around 45 seconds over the peloton. I knew I had it in the bag now. This race had gone from extremely disappointing to incredible in the span of 24 hours for me! I won!! In my first race as a part of the Worl Tour peloton. It was an incredible feeling. What's more, I now had the KOM jersey too!

i.imgur.com/wsCTz7Y.jpg

i.imgur.com/rt6DfB0.jpg

Stage 4 - The last stage was all about self-preservation for me. There wasn't enough KOM points available on the road for anyone surpass my tally. de Gendt joined the break for us while I stayed in the pack. I managed to stay with the group of leaers as the peloton kept reducing in numbers. de Gendt was the last surviving member of the break, caught by the leaders' group of 9, which included me. I got dropped in the last kilometre and lost 2 minutes. But I wasn't bothered. I finished 10th on the stage, which was won by Conti. de Gendt finished 9th.

I didn't care about my GC position (which was 39th, ok I did care a little). I had won a stage and that's all that mattered. Spain, once again is my good luck charm. A bad race for Meintjes as he struggled to find his rhythm. But I' on cloud nine right now. A stage win, the KOM jersey and second place in the Points. Winning the lottery indeed!
