Indeed the hills are a worry - could have sworn I sent Nzeke or Lloyd there to help/stage hunt but oh well Frown

Dependent on Davison? The Benelux challenged us too much...

i.imgur.com/Ksuqkky.png

Stage One | Prologue
No photos of our lads today but Tom Davison surprised everyone, not barring himself, to grab 6th on the day whilst team leader Diggle did well to place 30th, just 16 seconds down on our fellow African team, La Poste's Belgian winner Gaetan Bille, and by a single place the top Kiwi.

Stage Two | Flat
Clarke was just not fast enough today and disappointed - the hill proved too tough and he didn't have the legs. Unfortunately key domestique for all our stages MTK had to abandon after a nasty crash - luckily he'll be good for the next race. 7th is not good enough however Diggle came 9th keeping himself safe and in the chaos of the crashes Davison moved up to 3rd on GC - a small silver lining.

Stage Three | Hilly
We should have been better here, we were the dominant pace-setting team but we ran out of men and the solo break of Goodnews Clifford took the win, Badnews for us as guess who was the strongest team in the pack sprint (where Diggle failed to get a gap)? Us! Lloydy getting 2nd should have been a proud moment for us but it was nothing compared to what might have been and Diggle ruining his GC hopes. With Clifford taking the GC lead Davison dropped to 4th, however we moved to 2nd in the team classification with many of our riders making the selection.

Quick Quotes:
Robbie du Plessis, DS: "A bit under the standards we set for ourselves but some nice surprises such as Jam's good performances and especially Tom's GC spot and eventually leader role. Disappointed but not disheartened, the big worry was lack of attacking at any time, not what we wanted, not a single break
Tom Davison, 10th: "Yeah obviously I'd rather we could have delivered Tommy or Gez to a better result but I'm over the moon personally, this is one of my best ever pro results and it's quite special."
Jamalidin Novardianto, Debutant: "Not what we wanted overall but it was such an amazing feel to be racing at this level and to really turn pro. I did well overall but most of all I know I did the best I could for the leaders in every stage. Got my first crash too, I'm really a pro now! [laughs]"

"We need to re-think, re-focus, re-plan."

With the rumour mill beginning to get underway, at least in terms of the future of some teams - here at thecyclingreport.com thought we'd give you an update on Xero Racing p/b Octagon. With a slightly subpar start to their season there's been many a soundbite here, a tidbit of gossip there, to analyse.

Confirmed:

'We will stay in the African and Oceanian markets, as Octagon are pleased to announce they will be staying on in a major or title sponsor role.' - Wynton Burns, General Manager

This means that New Zealand will stay on as a main focus country whilst Africa could take a slight backseat - or stay the same. We guess promises may need to be made about better representation of Africans on the team.

'We already know with not many teams predicted to disband that to abide by our Xero vision of aggressive racing meeting results, and to promote by the end of 2017 with a good base for survival in 2018, we need to re-think, re-focus and re-plan our structure.' - Jackson Huges, Sporting Manager

We could have already guessed that this would be the plan but it just confirms Xero are already setting their sights on planning for next year.

Rumours:

Xero Racing are unhappy with the lack of young talent.

With their ambitions of developing New Zealand and African cycling this one comes as little surprise to be hearing and fits in with the "re-think, re-focus, re-plan" that Jackson Hughes has been talking up.

Cycling NZ are wishing to help develop cycling in the Pacific Islands and Xero is to be their vehicle for doing so.

There are Fijians in the peloton already but with this all but confirmed the only rumour is that Xero will be onboard, possibly with a Pacific sponsor, possibly just developing and sponsoring Pacific cycling themselves.

Xero will be the only Kiwi CT team next year.

Disbandment rumours are abundant later in the year but tidbits of gossip are circulating already - their Kiwi rivals Fox Sports and Spark have been tipped for folding, though obviously these are just rumours. Considering only 10 Kiwis are currently in these teams the battle for the hot new generation of Kiwi riders will be more contested than ever this could be a huge burden off the back of any team in this battle if one of the others were to disband.

Seems like somebody's trying to climb New Zealands CT throne. Also pacific sounds interesting. I love it! Good luck mate Smile

Decent race for us, not so pleased with points but very pleased with the manner in which they were earned - 47 points from attacking riding (others were Scully sprinting or TTing) the most of which coming from Hirschlein, a man who's publicly admitted he's fighting for his contract, and Jams, who is my favourite guy in the world right now, despite his lack of a win. Pleased with performance but results must improve, leading us into...

What a terrible terrible race. Salinas just generally not on the right level, Diggle having the racing IQ of someone who's played PCM once and never watched cycling. Our first KoM win is to be celebrated but not so much with how bad this was for us.

Goal accomplished and Kraftwerk taking it out with an OP leadout but Clarkee best of the rest makes it a very good race for us. 10m more and it would've been second but Clark3 finding the podium yet again is just what the doctor ordered.

It feels like a cheat with but one race but it was a good enough performance to merit the awarding of RotM so it's obviously

June Preview
Back into it after a May with only one race, June brings us 13 racing days spread across four races and one home and goal race in the form of the Giro del Capo.

Band reasons put us here and yes, the manager is a bit brain-damaged. The young riders will pick up some experience at a higher level over very tough cobbles and one of them will even get to lead.

The second chance this season to see Scully sprint must go better than Langkawi - a team 100% for him lacks a leadout man so he'll be on the back of trains on all 5 days. Lofty ambitions here but we really need it.

So we forgot about the MTT when scheduling - we have a good team for the hilly stages in a home race and a goal race for us, Diggle, Lloydy and Nzeke will be mixing it up on the hilly days for stage honours (so long as we don't go in the early break Tom) and also trying to give us another goal achieved in a top 10 overall. No sprinters here with a clashing classic so we'll be trying to stay safe for the first two stages.

Rankings Update - Mid-Year Mediocrity

We've had the third rankings update and though we're not smart enough to go into some of the detail some of our fantastic counterparts do, here's a mildly depressing overview of where we're at.
April

1pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.pngKraftwerk Man Machine391
2pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.pngFerrero - Samruk261
3pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.pngLa Poste - Mavic248
4pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.pngIsostar - Adriatic215
5pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.pngCarlsberg - Danske Bank212
8pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.pngXero Racing p/b Octagon163

As you can see here it wasn't a terrible month but a lot of races is the main reason we're a solid 8th here. This is basically the minimum for a regular month with the poor start if we want to have a real shot at our top 10 goal.
May

1pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.pngMOL - OMV Petrom239
2pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.pngKraftwerk Man Machine227
3pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.pngSauber Petronas Racing204
4pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.pngcycleYorkshire s/b ASDA-Savers163
5pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.pngSchuh powered by Wiggle152
20pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.pngXero Racing p/b Octagon42

Only one race and it went rather spiffingly. Not bad at all really but obviously 42 is a bit terrible any other month except January.
Overall

11pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.pngKraftwerk Man Machine1115
22pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.pngFerrero - Samruk857
33pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.pngPodium Ambition812

55pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.pngCarlsberg - Danske Bank674
1213pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.pngXero Racing p/b Octagon522

A slight upwards tragectory needs to continue but it doesn't look so with Salinas running out of days - 12th is not good enough at this stage of the season and we really hope this training camp over May will take effect fast and hard.
Projected

1513pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.pngXero Racing p/b Octagon522618,561027

The last and most important ranking is also, typically, the most horrifying. It's looking pretty morbid down in a predicted fifteenth - and judgin by Jonny's race days it may be being generous.

there is still a place to go towards promotion for you, man it's 170 points between #4 and #12 - and even more look at the projected rankings! 300 points can be found so easily with 2 good races...

Yeah it is tight and fingers crossed for a good few months coming up!

the_hoyle
Mediocrity is a bit of stretch for the team - you have done well and constantly scored well during the months so far. As croatia said, there is only 300pts between you and 5th place, so a high position and possible promotion is still on for you.

I tried to write a full rant on this but my wounds are too raw, but not bleeding, if you get my crappy analogy. Safe to say, Scully better figure out how one does tactics, because "you're leader" in a flat race does not mean "come 12th please Tom". At least we won the KoM, so here's a nice picture of that:

This is, obviously, a joke and it's an honour to be nominated Grin

The Backhanded Compliment Award

Well it seems we, more accurately our HQ as there's no way our team would be awarded anything good, have been nominated for some sort of award? HQ of the Year? It's an honour as really it's just our stream of thought taking the piss out of ourselves and wildly celebrating good things and taking a pessimistic view of our mediocri- wait that's what you enjoy isn't it. You people reading this, you like to sit there and chuckle as we slowly lose all hope of our team. You take great schadenfreude from this, don't you*? Well, I tell you what - next year, you won't because we WILL promote and we WON'T disappoint. We WON'T receive this backhanded nomination next year, because we'll be celebrating how good we are, and all you people want to do is enjoy our failures. If I've made you feel guilty, feel guilty and fall into the spiral of guilt that comes with laughing at a poor CT team, who only have a 22-year-old boy that they pay to make the troubles go away.

We mean Jamalidin Novardianto, of course. A rider. For our team. So there's nothing creepy about that last sentence.

*Feel free to vote for us anyway, we could really do with an award!

Shonak
You deserved it well. I also like your nomination for new manager of the year, given the last season. Wink
