Tosh Van der Winning in Berlin

Coming straight off Dunkerque, Van der Sande continues his roll of form at the Berlin Pro Race against some of the best sprinters. Whilst his newly named archrival Vantomme has been missing, Van der Sande usurped the dominant sprint trains of Eritrel and Wiesenhof, sneaked past a blockade in the last few hundred meters, to take a clear victory on the slightly uphill route. With his quality in the flat and hills, this win still comes as a lucky surprise, one we can't get enough off though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Berlin/berlin_16.jpg

Strava was at first cautious about our chances, and we were hoping for a showdown instigated by Baugnies and Langeveld, looking at the recent history of this race. However Van der Sande confirmed his new found killer instinct by taking his third win of the season.

I've heard back-to-back promotions in the first two years of a team are possible. Seems like you might be on track to do exactly that Grin

Van der Sande in impressive shape recently. Congrats on another fantastic victory!

Tosh is on a more than decent run; but so is the whole team - great to see from one of my favourite teams and managers! Smile

Van der Sande where actually in my thoughts during transfer when I noticed that SN was about to sell him but his role would have been a leadout man and not leader in my sprint squad...Funny how things can go..

But anyways congrats to the win and his and the whole teams season so far! Smile

PCT Rankings May

Great news!

Strava, last year's second place at the CT, has taken the lead in the May ranking of the PCT by scoring 1996 points so far. As a new promoted squad, this is a great way to show that we have arrived in this league after a slow start.

Are we ready to leave it just yet? The races will tell. With the cobblez calendar being mostly over, the big point gains won't happen anymore. Instead we'll have to rely on our sprinters and puncheurs and maybe - one of these - days - a breakaway rider of ours will get lucky. At least as far as the sprinter goes, Tosh Van der Sande has been on a roll lately, snatching 3 wins in total. Hopefully Modolo will get inspired by this!

i.giphy.com/80JDbrgJ0jnP2.gif

As of now, we are happy with the standings but also very wary of the coming months. Already in June the situation could be well different since we have barely any race days there.

We may stand a chance to promote back-to-back to the PT but since we lost last year's CT by such a narrow margin of 17 points, we know that anything is bound to happen.

Amazing to see you leading the PCT rankings! Proof that what Evonik did last season was not a one-off! Would be fantastic for you to take this to the end of the season

You make it look so easy to climb through the divisions Pfft

Great stuff from Strava and so cool to see you at the top of the ranking. A slight drop is to be expected due to the am of the cobble season but the gap still looks very promising right now. I'm gonna cheer for you all season long in the hope that we will meet in the biggest races next season Grin

Toshy as 2nd best scoring sprinter in the division is sick though

PCT Rankings June

With just one race this entire month, Strava stood a high chance of losing its first place. But our lead has been big enough and the good scoring in Grozny allowed us to keep the first place. Even so, we have improved from 2nd to 1st in the projected season finale rankings. However due to our focu son cobblez and only two classics on this terrrain remaining, it'll be super close for promotion.

The question right now is anyway quite different: Is the solid first season half enough for Strava to earn a nomination for Team of the Year again at the annual ManGame Awards, making it 2 for 2?

Viana do Baugnieskill!

There have been three major classics in the past months full of pavé, hellingen and Stravamissimo performances. Our narrative has been caught between our orange ambitions for PT promotion and the tackle of the Summerhill-leviathan, most recently dubbed as the White Walker.

i.imgur.com/kcWWIIW.jpg

At the portuguese race, Viana do Castelo, we sent a strong squad, including a pavé tourist in PhilBear. The team did great though, and whilst we couldn't secure a win, 6 riders inside the Top 20 (4 riders inside Top 10) made for a great points haul. Baugnies was our best rider, finishing on third, after having wasted some precious energy for the finale against winner Summerhil and Eritrel rider Lagab.

Grozny Classic

Also with hills but much less gradient, Grozyn Classic could have made for another great display of Strava prowess. A fairly uneventful race however kept the peloton largely together and didn't play to Strava's strenghts of dismantlment. Even more so however we got lucky, because Baugnies didn't have a good day and so he was lacking energy in the finale, once again. A more action-packed race could have meant less scoring, so we take what we can get.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Grozny/gro4.jpg

All in all, this meant an easy cruise to victory for Danny Summerhill, whilst Strava was left to pick up the scrubs left by fellow cobblez experts Lierse and Shimano. Still with multiple riders inside the scoring range, Strava made some good points here too.

Tour of the Battenkill

Strava's latest race was the fulfillment of a season-long hunt for glory. Although many times close this season, US-team Strava was pushing for victory at a home race. With the layout resembling much of Summerhill's strengths, the table was served for another Summerkill in high summer though.

i.imgur.com/1KroB1N.jpg

However, Baugnies was having none of it, and whilst the team was playing a tactical race throughout, our wallonian top scorer made a great push alongside Eritrel-rider Lagab once more.

i.imgur.com/pPOpWs8.jpg

The race was close throughout and Baugnies was almost caught by the prestigious chasers, where Summerhill was suffering from previous efforts and had to bend down to Teunnisse, Maes and Franzoi. Eventually Battenkill would turn to become a memorial of the first major Summerhill defeat this season, as Baugnies had fulfilled his promise of the crosshair, turned it all into Baugnieskill, and took another major win for Strava's fight in the promotion battle at the Battenkill-landside.

Big Honours

At the ManGame Awards, Strava has been rewarded the awards of Team of the Year and Team HQ of the Year (alongside fellow PCT team Valio and PT stars Team I-Gen-Festina). Stava's manager Shonak was voted runner-up at the Manager of the year ceremony.

velomotion.de/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/bfs201615.jpg

This is an outstanding moment for the team and we'd like to thank all the ones who voted for us and supported us at the sidelines, be it belgian pavé, grueling mountain passes or US city crits.

We hope we can continue the journey we've set on two years ago. With back-to-back nominations in our 2 year history, we are on now on a great way to promote to PT from CT within two years and our goal is clearly cut in stone: Make the PT a little bit more orange with our flags and jerseys.

Fast Recap

Many races since our last update. Highlights include Rheden GP win of Jerome Baugnies, stage wins by Sascha Modolo in Portugal and some minor disappointments in Tour of Britain, Ukraine and some minor classics.

Volta a Portugal was the first great race of past months, where Modolo got two stage wins and was close to a third win two times if it wasn't for the breakaway who resisted the peloton. This meant that Modolo scored still vital points for the fight in the points jersey but came short up against Kruiswijk at second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Portugal/mg2016_portugal_11_PCM0058.jpg
Unforgiving speed sees Modolo take away the stage win of Nordhaug

A similiar top result was achieved by Van der Sande, well almost. On the first day of Ukraine he came second but disappeared alongside his puncheur fellas for the upcoming days. A missed chance to score surely.

Literally hardly anything is to be reported from Tour of Britain and Österreich Rundfahrt, where Strava mostly disappeared. Little GC action (few appearances by Gilber the best, and Didier sitting at 5th for a while), less breakaway action, and Modolo doing god know what in the peloton. Truly, once again we had to rely on the cobblers to drag us out of the mud.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Rheden/rhe14.jpg

Naturally, Baugnies delivered and thanks to strong Strava support, especially by Gaudin, we were able to match the sprinter's powers and the onslaught of Summerhill, to take another classic win! This is Baugnies' second classic win in a row! Rheden GP is likely the last win of Strava this season and it's all the sweeter by Baugnies.

September Ranking

Despite the disappointments of the previous months, Strava still is on the way to back-to-back promote. We are currently sitted at third and the projected rankings sees us in the top 5 still. However, the goal is clear for the last three classics: Score enough points to stay up there on the third step at least.

Promotion to Pro Tour

With the last race day and the season concluding, Strava is in need of some serious champagne and maybe some GPS tracking to find our drunk, celebrating riders again. Strava has secured promotion to the Pro Tour by finishing a fantastic 4th in the PCT ranking.

After coming second in the CT last year, we were off to a strong start in the PCT thanks to our strong cobbled core. With wins of Van der Sande and Modolo we enjoyed a solid transition to summer. However, there we started to drop as first Wiesenhof and gradually Porto-Prio and Hugo Boss came closer to us. In the end, our depth could not prevent the drop to 4th, although major classic wins by Baugnies (Rheden GP, Tour of Battenkill) and Langeveld (Paris-Tours) capped of the season for us in a nice way.

We are also proud to announce that 4 of our 5 goals were accomplished. We only missed the win goal of E3 Harelbeke by coming second to Summerhill. Highlights of the season were of course our awards for Team of the Year and Team HQ of the Year as well as wins at Tour of the Battenkill and Paris-Tours. But also the collective strong performances at Viana do Castelo and Van der Sande's Berlin win are great memories in our highlight wheel.
