Wiggins and Cavendish won it two years in a row in 2011 & 2012. There is your counter answer.
Wiggins was Olympic year (the BBC love an Olympic year) and Cav was World Champion and first Green Jersey winner in the Tour... No other achievements (Froome at Tour, Cav's achievements before or after etc.) have never been recognised. There is your answer.

No British cyclist had won the World Champs/ Tour before then. Apart from Simpson who, guess what? Won Sports Personality of the Year in 1965.
So basically prior to Froome, every male cyclist who had been world Champ or won the Tour had won SPotY but yet the BBC don't like road cycling?

Yes of course. Just sweeping my head up as we speak.
So you don't believe winning the Tour 3 times is enough of an achievement to even get into the top 3 of SPotY at any point?
Also, you say the BBC don't like cycling. It's the public who vote for the award so your little theory is once again proved to be very incorrect.

I didn't say that he shouldn't be on the list. Quite the opposite. There are many times where I thought cyclists should be on the list in past years when there haven't been.
EDIT: Yes the vote for the winner is public, but the shortlist is put together by BBC personnel, former sportstars (yes I know Victoria Pendleton is on there) and other sporting personnel.
Stop trying to cause an argument just for the sake of it.

What have British road cyclists achieved in the period between Tommy Simpson and Mark Cavendish that deserves a nomination?
Roger Hammond finishing 4th in P-R?
Chris Boardman winning the odd prologue?
No cyclist has ever really achieved anything in the period between Simpson and Cavendish to justify being nominated. Burton and Cooke got regularly nominated (And Burton finished 2nd once) but lets face it, a female road cyclist is never really going to win the award.
You can't blame the BBC for not nominating road cyclists when they haven't done anything to be nominated for.

In an Olympic year you've got to do either something in the Olympics or really quite exceptional outside it. Froome did neither, and hence he doesn't get nominated. Nothing to do with the BBC though, as the nominations are made by a panel of Journalists. And of course the Olympics will dominate in that instance, especially as pro cycling is still niche in the UK.
Although why Danny Willett got nominated is beyond me. Won the Masters and nothing else of any significance at all. And his Ryder Cup performance was mediocre at best, scoring 0 points for the team by losing both Fourballs and his Singles.

So winning the Tour for a 3rd time isn't exceptional? Why? Because he's done it twice before?
The Olympic year thing is a major factor, as I said in my original post, but come on. To not even nominate the TdF winner is a joke.
If the winner came from any other country and they had a similar award they would be nominated without question.

Because wins from previous years shouldn't count when looking at the best riders of the current year.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Winning Masters is feat of a lifetime, nothing else in golf (and maybe whole sports for british) comes even close bar maybe British Open in same sport. He deserves the award just for that win, even if he should finish last in every other tournament.
To stay on cycling topic - Froome is such a no-personality (here you have it Ringo), that i would not also think about nomination. And he wins thanks to his team, cycling is not an individual sport. You could also nominate Poels for that win of Froome...

Again, so a TdF win on it's own isn't an exceptional achievement?

I get that the Masters is the prestige event above all others in Golf, and that the Green Jacket is huge to golfers. But as a sporting feat i can't see how it's different than winning any of the other majors given that the best golfers attend them all. But that's me and my relative lack of interest in Golf.
But here's the crux: It's an opinion award. It's the opinion of the panel in who they nominate and then it's the opinion of the public in who wins (which will be Murray btw). And when it comes to comparing so many different sports and achievements it is just about opinions because there is no way anyone would ever agree a statistical method of fair comparision.
I think Willett is a bad nomination. Ringo thinks exluding Froome is the end of the world. Some will say X or Y should/shouldn't be nominated. BBC SPOTY is a popularity award, but it's a nice excuse to look back at our failing nation in a good way...

I seem to remember having an argument during the Olympics because I said the team at the Olympics should get the gold, not only the winner, because it's a team sport. Now you are saying exactly the same thing. I got called an idiot but no doubt everyone will now agree with Avin simply because it goes against Me/Froome/Sky.

I am not saying anything like that, that someone should be given Olympics gold because he worked for leader...you should work on your logics a bit.
Also i would not drag your frustration about being misunderstood poster into discussion, because then the point we discuss is lost.

No I don't. I simply posted some news in November.
I merely said that the winner of the TdF deserves to be nominated for the award. That happens to be Froome at the moment. I would say the same about any British rider winning the TdF. It's common sense that the winner of the hardest sporting event in the World deserves to be nominated for the SPotY.
I agree it's just a popularity contest to award the actual winner. But as you say the nominations are selected by journalists. They should be nominating on merit and the winner of the TdF in any year deserves to be nominated on merit.

I also found it quite strange, but i have read a book on the topic and really majority of golfers and fans/journalists find Masters above all the majors and other tours. It has special place in golf and winning it gives you "immortality", while nobody remembers all the winners of other majors. It is even bigger thing than Wimbledon in tennis...

It was a boring TdF and he achieved close to nothing for the rest of the year, unlike Wiggins 2012. I wouldn't call it exceptional for a rider with his abilities.
