Yet he should still be happy with his ride, but we found him staring at nowhere in the team bus knowing that he'd lost the overall win in the echelons in the penultimate stage

Vuelta a Murcia (1.1) Murcia, 167.9 kms In the east of Spain the pack is facing a race with very few completely flat sections. No doubt the bumpy profile will determine what one has left on the last climb to the castle, also known as Alto Castillo de Lorca. A first interesting breakaway group with names such as Adrien Costa, J.J. Rojas, Victor de la Parte and Jérôme Baugnies was reined in very quickly. A second attempt was a more succesful one and Pello Bilbao was part of it, along with Firsanov, Pereiro, Sole and Planet. At the longest climb of the race, Bilbao quickly drifted to the back of the group, and not only because he thought this fan wanted a picture of him alone. He let go as the first of the group but maintained a steady pace, which allowed him to reach the summit in third, but too far back. Firsanov and Sole survived this climb but their adventure also came to an end with 10 kilometers to go. At that point a short-lived acceleration by Matvey Mamykin and Adam Yates had already been neutralised. Just before the tunnel in the penultimate kilometer, Eder Chávarri was sitting around 10th position, backed up by Gorka Izagirre. And luckily the well-known devil stepped back just in time to avoid a collision. This occurence did not wipe away the smile from Dieter Senft's face at all. After the tunnel, Adam Yates is the first who attacks, and right away Tinkoff struggled to close the gap as the Brit just kept gaining ground. With the finish line within sight already, Yates lost his strong cadence but nobody was close enough to battle him for the win. So he took it. About 25" later, Chávarri outsprinted Alejandro Valverde and Pierre Rolland to deny Team Sky a 1-2 at this race. This second place is an encouraging result and the best one of our season at the same time. Clásica de AlmerÃa (1.1) 184.2 kms Both start and finish of the race are located close to the sea, with some climbing to do in the inland in between. Still the profile clearly favours the sprinters, even though none of the really big guns are racing here. The breakaway is an entirely Spanish one with Pablo Lechuga, David de la Cruz and Omar Fraile being part of it. Lechuga is forced to let go due to the high pace set by his companions. Next de la Cruz attacks as well to continue on his own with over 40 kilometers left in the race. IAM's Brian van Goethem tries to counter-attack but the gap did not become any bigger than it is in the picture. De la Cruz is reeled in too and the battle of the trains begins. It was ours against the one of Lotto-Soudal. At first we had the upper hand but suddenly we got overruled. In the end Erik Baska came out of nowhere on his very own to win the race Sagan-style, as Edward Theuns and Sacha Modolo completed the podium. Carlos Barbero finished further back within the top ten. Tour of Oman (2.HC) Stage 1, 158.6 kms A relatively easy stage to start with as a lot of slightly downhill racing is included. Most probably some of the riders would also try to claim the mountain jersey, even if they would only wear it for a single day only. With a little over 20 kms to go, Tom Wirtgen and Benjamin Thomas were about to surrender to the chasing peloton. Jonathan Klever had been with them and had also failed to win the King of Mountain sprint or any of the intermediate sprints. Neither was he close to a stage win. Almost inside the final kilometer, Molano sat close to Bouhanni, who had to do it on his own. Stuyven looked good after Lotto's hard work, but the Frenchman was closing in... And what could Molano still do? Bouhanni comfortably won the stage in front of Coquard and Manzin, who denied Molano a podium finish. Anything but a bad result for our Colombian sprinter who is used to serving as the final leadout guy.
