Short highlights vid. Monster sprint by Sagan. Seems like his form will be brilliant for Doha, maybe he'll do a Bettini and take the rainbow stripes back-to-back.

Sagan-GVA and Froome-Quintana clearly the two best rivalries in the peloton atm. Hopefully much more of it next season Smile

Definitely. Hopefully GVA won't crash again, that was just horrible. I doubt he'd won Ronde, but those 2 are amazing. Sagan is a bit better, so is Froome, but GVA and Quintana are up for it.

Unawarely I have come to terms that GVA is a Top 5 rider in peloton. What is more shocking, is that I rated him and Roelandts around the same just a few years back.

Dusen
Smart ride by GVA, he took advantage of Sagan having to pull so much at the front, and got the better of him in the slightly uphill finish.

Great season both riders have had.

He's been improving since all the ozone case

GVA and Sagan, okay.
Quintana and Froome not really a rivalry. Well that's personal but I don't see it that way.

Best rivalry is probably Bouhanni against everyone who doesn't want to get knocked in the teeth, though.

In all the Tour's Froome has won, Quintana has finished on the podium and clearly been his biggest competitor (the horrendous 2016 edition aside). Plus this Vuelta, I'd call it a pretty big rivalry by now.

Was Schleck v Contador a rivalry to you?

Wasn't much into cycling then so don't know.

Just to be clear. My idea of a rivalry is De Vlaeminck - Merckx, Anquetil - Poulidor. Hinault - Lemond. And most of all, Coppi e Bartali!
In that aspect, Froome - Quintana is anything but a rivalry. They're too friendly with each other, too clean (haha I'm not talking about doping but lanuague etc), too much goody-boys.
If you see what De Vlaeminck dared say about Merckx. Awesome. Cycling nowadays are too bland I think. Sagan the exception (and he wouldn't even have necessarily stood out in history, he does now because he's the only one - talking about personality and not abilities obviosly)

How can it be a true rivalry when Froome is saying: Oh yeah I respect Quintana, he deserved this, what a rider blah blah.
And Quintana: I respect Froome so much he's so awesome I love him.
Stroke, stroke, stroke.
Pfft

(in that aspect: Van Avermaet - Gilbert possibly a bit.)

Problem is Sagan is the only big name that doesn't appear to have to give media friendly answers and who actually shows any personality nowadays.

Normally guys getting interviewed will have seen someone from the team who will tell them how to word things or what to avoid so you don't get honest spur of the moment feelings out of them.

I get the impression that it didn't used to be like that and that the stars could say what they really felt as media training was nowhere near as prevalent, not just in cycling but all major sports, and that there was more chance of their actual personality shining through.

A case in point would be the Orica backstage Passes, obviously they are edited to some degree but they seem to give the best indication of the characters in the peloton and especially in their team and show a side of their riders that you don't normally get to see in formal post race interviews.

I think Sagan only gets so much free reign because of how big of a star he is and how important he is to cycling's image as a whole, I don't think any other rider would be able to speak so freely as he does, especially after things like his E3 Podium antics from a few seasons ago but I get the impression people know that his personality is a draw tot eh sport so don't want to tone him down too much as there isn't really anyone else with that level of cross appeal that could draw an audience in the same way.

I don't doubt there are other guys in the peloton that are just as entertaining but because they don't have his level of talent on the bike, which let's face it, is hard to have, they don't get as many chances to showcase their personality and as they aren't such a star they still have to answer positively in interviews.

The only other rider I can think of recently that has seemed to go against the media training and say how they feel is Cav and it has led to him gaining quite a lot of guys that don't like him but unlike most riders you always seem to get a genuine unfiltered reaction from him.

Sagan is cycling's biggest star right now but he is only just the second greatest Sagan ever. Pfft

EDIT Nice win for Gold Van Avermaet. Him and Sagan seem to be go for the World Championships, maybe they can stick it to the pure sprinters..

Rivalries don't have to be infused by hate imo

Riis123
Its not how I see a rivalry either, it can 100% be a rivalry from a sporting perspective, altho hate and such just adds to it obviously. Pfft

Who said anything about hate? Hate's nothing to do with it.
Coppi and Bartali even were friends in some way, they definitely didn't hate each other.
But praising each other every step of the way and being a good boy all the time (Quintana - Froome) isn't a rivalry.

It's not an olympic medal but after the close miss at the Rio TT, Castroviejo wins the European Championships TT

Best result by Moser since Strade Bianche 2013?

Moser was second in that stage that Trentin won in this Giro, and won a stage in Tour of Austria last year.

Finally a great win for Castroviejo in a TT, After been 4th in both Worlds and Olympics

Riis123
Castro really deserved that one, hoping for a medal in Qatar!

Well Gaviria won again... I'm not sure, but he is the first colombian winning a one day race in Europe? (not mountain or hilly one)

Winning in Belgium its something we've never dream about...
