The Runners thread

Yesterday I ran Stockholm Half Marathon. The 25 degrees and sun made the finishing time a lot worse than what I hoped for. My time was 1:17:47 with the splits 18:04-18:12-18:30-19:03-4:01 and finishing as 30:th man(last place to receive prize). Last year I finished 23:rd place with 1:16:22. I usually suffer more than others from heat. With the same temperature as last year I probably would have gotten around 1:16.

1:17:47 is a great time and to finish 30th in Sweden's second biggest half marathon is impressive, keep that in mind! Have you ran your first marathon yet?

Well done sssj, keep it up. Smile I don't think I will be attempting any races over 10 miles at the moment as my times for shorter distances are dropping like stones - that said I did do a 10 mile race a few weeks ago and that probably helped a lot with my times!

I think the last time I posted here I said a short-medium goal was to get under 16 mins for the 5k - well that went well - now into the 15:40s!

Joining a club, really paying off it seems!

Sucks to be on the bench...

I am out for my senior year for awhile due to Achilles tendonitis... hurts on my left foot pretty bad below my ankle! Anybody here have any tips?

My trainers tell me eccentric heel drops are my friend, to NOT ice it, and to stretch it and stay off of it often. Started last Sunday and has been feeling better each day, hoping to be running again by the end of the week!

I am hoping that my coach allows me to run my first marathon race 5:th November in Stockholm. It should be a lot better weather at that time of the year.

I did today my first run in light rain for a few months, quite a change after this hot summer, and I'm quite motivated for some long distance runs too. I wanted to do my annual marathon run already this year but I havn't got myself to it, also because I was very lazy when it came to running half marathons as prep. So I'm legging behind and just doing daily 10k runs. At least I'm closing in on the 2000 km mark this year, and might even reach 2.500 km at the end of it. However this will also depend on work and university, so 2.500 might be just out of reach due to a heavy month of cycling in July.

Awesome times ssssj, you are such a natural at such a young age.

Oh and for anybody wondering how Aquarius is doing, he recently won a local half marathon race of 22,5k.

I am back from injury!!! I ran the 5 mile race in 31:08 compared to 31:02 last year when I was injury free. I am excited to keep pounding away this season!

So what do you guys use to track your runs on your smartphones? I'm very unimpressed with Strava stability and data-visualization wise when it comes to runs - while it's still the best for rides of course.

Endomondo, Runkeeper, Map My Fitness, Nike+ and Runtastic all look good, but all look the same. Myself I've only used the latter of those and yes it's better than Strava but I would like to know if there any particular perks those other bring to the table.

Yeah the new set-up for running (that has been here for a year now me thinks?) isn't ideal, mostly because they want to get you into premium my guess. It's rather annoying that you only see the last 2-3 kilometers pace and Strava also really doesn't utilize and informs you well on the current pace.. it's just the recent kilometer and it appears rather laggy to me, at the start of each kilometer almost random. That said, i still use it but I havn't tried anything else so far. I obviously have to stay committed to the app for MG reasons. Wink

Although I do not like the changes to Nike+ I use that and it works great!

Been one of the best decisions I have ever made to really get into running this year.

Strongly recommend it to anyone. Great atmosphere around the races, most are really friendly. You will get in better shape. A massive variety of races are on, in northern England anyway.

Bit of a lull in races at this time of year, so just plenty of long training runs and cross country.

Got two months ahead of my goal race, will be the first time I have had a plan ahead of a race ever. I will see how that goes!

I've been out for almost two months now. I broke my feet during a football match beginning of December. Today I visited the doctor and he said that I can run in two weeks time. Now I'm wondering if I should get right down to full training or is it better to develop slow over several weeks? I have never been out for so long, so I don't know really how to get back to fitness.

I know close to nothing about training, but having made that kind of mistake several times before, I can whole-heartedly tell you to take it relatively slow with your come-back Pfft

I randomly signed up for a marathon in 2 weeks time. I've never ran more than 10 kilometres, running has always bored me to death compared to cycling (so it has always been high intensity), so this is definitely going to be interesting. Tested myself today and Im just capable of holding 4'00 pace for 5 kilometres, so Im in at least decent shape after been doing cross training and cycling and just a bit of running over the winter. I guess quitting cigarettes also helped, I could barely run 5 kilometres on 23-24 minutes before. Pfft

My plan is to go on some long endurance rides on my MTB and run 20 kilometres at one point before the race to get a feeling of what my pace should be. I'd imagine something about 5'30, I'd much rather run a bit slower than Im capable of at first.

Will update in 2 weeks time with my time. Admittedly, this is a bit of an experiment, mainly just to test myself, but also to try and see how effective cross/cycling training is as an alternative to just running. I'd bet my body wouldn't be able to cope with that much hardcore run training and honestly, I don't really enjoy that compared to a long ride on my bike.
Edit: For clarification, when referring to a cross training, its in a gym.. unfortunately.

Ran my personal best in the 3K this past weekend. 9:41 in the race finishing 2nd in my heat and 13th overall out of 33.

Followed it with a :58 in the 400 and a 2:18 in the 800. Ran them both tired so I know I can do better! Conference Championships in just over 2 weeks!

^ Way to go mate! Smile

After a good block of training just had my 10km goal race and nailed it with a PB of 32:45 despite being a long 10k! Very happy! Very optimistic about where I can go running!

If anyone wonders why I haven't been on this site, this has been the reason. Well this and the fact that sadly there has been a lot of negativity on the site for the last few months, you will know which thread I mean, which has really turned me off honestly.

Keep running, TR.

Wow, thats an AMAZING 10K time! my 8K PR is 27:48

I would never do a 10K that fast Pfft
