Lopez and Bewley rode half the stage working their ass off for their leader then rode half the stage alone and still finished ahead of 70 rider peloton
90 riders even...

I love how the rules guys are super strict with the time limit bullshit on mountain stages and kick a guy out for being less than a minute over but here, people can just slack it off whilst others are racing for their lives.

Given the drafting in the peloton, the shortness of the stage and the relatively ease of the climbs, I'm pretty sure it'd been possible. Still suffer up the climbs big time but plenty of chill rest in the bunch in the flats.

"I'm happy because the result on [Saturday's stage 14] did not really correspond with my form, I felt better than that," Contador said.
"Today I wasn't feeling so optimistic because the climbs weren't so hard, but I went out from the gun without knowing who I had on my wheel. I knew it was a dangerous gamble, but we got a great result. I had no idea, though, who was following me when I attacked.
"I got cramps in the last kilometre, but it was a nice spectacle. These sorts of stages are the kind that create a fanbase in the sport. I'll sleep a lot better tonight than I did yesterday."
He explained that he would have liked to have fought for the stage win when Quintana and eventual winner Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx-QuickStep) broke away, but he explained that he had used up too much energy in the first hour and a half, where the gap between the break and chasing group rose to nearly three minutes at one point.
"Looking at the overall, I have to be realistic, this year my two big objectives [the Tour and Vuelta] are not working out as I'd like. I lost Paris-Nice and Catalunya by just a few seconds. But I'm already thinking about next year.
"The nice thing is we tore up the script. We [Tinkoff] don't have many climbers, we don't have the power of Sky or Movistar, but they gave it everything and they did a spectacular job."
Great things by Bertie. Cramps isn't ideal but explains why he loses time. Also spent lots of energy through the day. Now he needs a very fine time trial and then podium is surely within reach against Chavito. Also a matter of question how Froome will recover.

Far-Cic-Cal. Disgrace  Agree with the point on Lopez and Bewley too Anyway, Nairo approaching checkmate as I see Chaves only being able to catch Froome and go for 2nd, should be good enough to beat inconsistent but resilient Crashador ().

But you can't help noticing than the rules have been stretched a few times this season, when Froome have been in very serious trouble.
This time it is clearly Sky of the GC teams that will gain the most, If Froome lost the team he would not be in on podium after the Vuelta. might be outside top 5.

After what happened yesterday I really feel bad for Nathan Haas, he was sick on the stage into Bilbao yet suffered and battled through it to try and stay in the race but ultimately finished 50 minutes behind the winner and was kicked out. Yet we have a massive group of the peloton basically give up on yesterday stage and finish 54 minutes down and they get to stay in the race. The Haas decision was fair at the time but now just looks mean spirited in comparison to this.

Great stage. Hats off to Quintana and Contador. I guess that's the title sown up. Froome still favourite to finish second as Contador clearly still can't hack it on the climbs and so will lose more time this week before the tt.
I guess at least it makes the discussion about how much time Quintana needed at the tt redundant
I would like to know what Team Sky were playing at though. Did they suffer from the PCM bug where all of their riders started at the back of the peloton? I guess it shows the difference in quality between the Sky Tour team and this team which clearly can't handle riding for GC. |

If that's true then it is simply unforgivable and Sky deserve to lose the Vuelta.
Surely even if they started at the back they could have moved up in the neutralised zone? |

I think it's too simplistic to say every rule needs to be strictly followed in every circumstance in every race. Should the race leader/top 10 rider be treated the same as riders who are an hour down. Sometimes discretion and a bit of common sense needs to be used.
For example if the yellow jersey gets knocked off by a spectator in the final kilometre of a mountain stage, should he be treated the same as a rider just rolling into the finish an hour down. Do we really want a major race decided by encroaching fans/motorbikes?
I think the organisers do need to use their discretion at some times. It would be ridiculous to kick out half of the peloton for missing the time gap so they have made a decision for the good of the race as a whole.
A fine for all teams involved and a final warning that they will be kicked out if it happens again is what should be done in this case. |
