I doubt we will see him challenge for a GT win again
Whaaat? Never chellange for a GT again? He is clearly missing strength and stamina and won't win Vuelta but this can be down to the crash in Tour and training missing. To say that he will never challenge a GT again is just strange, especially after a hard day in the saddle where he showed his qualities..
When you look at the spring campaign, you know how strong he still is, and today showed that nobody understands GT racing like he does, nobody! It's actually funny to read such a thing after such a stage where he did great all day long and which is still a great day in his illustrous career. I can understand it when you say such a funeral note when he did nothing and got trashed, but today?? He orchestraded the moves and the BOTD, and just missed the power in the last two kilometers.
I know about the crashes but I just think he is done as a GT winner and especially if he does target the Tour next season. He's older now and his confidence has taken a beating this season all while younger GC riders are coming through. It's not at all strange to think his time has passed, it's happened to all the great GT riders
It's the same thing everytime and the agenda is just boring. He wins Giro but is too exhausted in le Tour and people call quits on him. He was shit in 2013 and people call quits on him. Cycling is just a village of gossip, waiting to push the next cow through the village, and they just love to toss Contador. Anybody who is declaring Contador does not have it anymore is has been saying the same everytime he showed weakness. When will people accept that you can bounce back from a shit form? Form is temporary, class is permanent.
Well I don't remember ever writing him off in those circumstances you mention and agree that people were wrong about that, what I'm doing is looking at the whole picture objectively, he's still a classy rider and capable of good results but it's no ridiculous to suggest that his time might be up, we've seen this happen before to the greats of GT racing so why not Contador? What makes him different to say Indurain? He won 5 straight Tours and other GT's then Bam! He was done, Contadors decline has been slower and he would be higher up in the GC if things had gone right for him bere but I still think it would of been touch and go he wins. Had he not crashed in the Tour he still wouldn't of challenged Froome and Sky there. I'm glad you are defending him as passion is good thing and it would be a sight to see him come back next year and pull off a GT win but I jus don't see it happening.
I'm not saying he is winning GTs or will win them next year. But I don't like it this notion that when you are beat you are no longer a contender. Fact is, a lot can happen in GTs, in a year, in a race. Routes, racing. It's not always the same, riders change too. To challenge for a win means he is a credible chance for a win, I still believe with proper training he'd still be right there. Of course the days of Contador default win are long gone, but he will surely remain a contender. One shouldn't write off champions like him, he has shown that imo today despite bonking eventually.

Apparently, as long as there are enough of them, they can do whatever they like and render the time limit completely useless. What a mockery |

Time limit is an essential part of racing. It's no wonder doping is such a plague in this sport when officials can't even enforce the simple rules of racing.

Froome also wins.
This should totally become a meme in cycling community.
Froome has a bad day in next stage and looses 20 minutes... Froome also wins
There's an earthquake during stage leving road shattered in pieces... Froome also wins
Franco resurects from grave... Froome also wins
Aliens invade planet Earth... Froome al... wait, nevermind, that would probably help.

There used to be a rule like that but I don't think it's still around. Those riders simply sat up to finish that far back and its straight up unfair on the riders who actually put in an effort to make the cut or just miss it while these guys soft pedal the stage. Once again we get let down by the authorities. I think it's time to amend the rule book to have just one rule 'do whatever you want'.

There is a rule that rules out any rules if the organisers decides to apply said rule.

Decisions like this really makes a mockery of the sport, Movistar, Tinkoff and to a lesser extent Astana work hard today and blow Sky up, all of Sky other than Froome completely sit up, finish waaaaaay outside the time limit (plus many others) and get to stay in the race after basically having a rest day and get to all come back rested to go up against teams that have worked there butts off today and will feel the effects from it. Seriously backwards decision

This makes it even worse.
Sorry for lack of better comparison, but it would be like punishing burglar by banning him from visiting house he tried to rob from. |

Boo - frikkin - hoo.
Not enforcing the rule and then giving a real harsh alternate "punishment" in the points department.
Next up: they'll have to ride on a pink bike tomorow, lose 9 points in the U25 ranking, draw a card, pass by start and receive 5 bucks.
Also, those who made it will receive personal congratulations by his Majesty the King of Spain. Those who didn't made the time cut will be humiliated by an angry mob with rotten tomatoes.
JUST enforce the rules properly. Anything else is ridiculous.
Except the mob thing, I'd go for that. |

There is precedent for this decision and it woulda been hugely surprising had they thrown them out, but its clear something needs to be done... |

The more I look at it, the more disgraceful this whole thing looks. Yeah, I get that not anyone is a climber and that for some riders losing 30 minutes on a mountain stage is a success, but when a top 10 guy and many other decent to even good climbers just decide to take a rest day and lose fricking 50 minutes on expense of others, it's just a pure abomination. |
