You would have thought Tinkoff would just let the others do the work. Why kill themselves to pull the break back only for Contador to blow up again half way up the final climb again.
Contador is not strong enough to ride away from the others at this moment. He needs to concentrate on limiting losses.
He tries and that is certainly to be applauded. What should the likes of Paulinho, Gogl etc. do anyways? They have done nada, zero during the Vuelta anyways so might as well see if he can win a stage. I like that attitude.
True. His attitude is good but tactics are very bad.
Why do they need to chase the break down for him to attack on the climb? His team would be more use to him on the mountain then chasing the break down.
All that's going to happen no is Movistar and Sky will take over on the climb and Contador will be isolated early on cause his team is knackered.
On a climb like this, it doesnt really matter how many teammates you have. You could have 0 or 3 and the result will be the same for Contador, Movistar will set the pace regardless.
You will be surprised by Contador today. |

He's surprised me already. By how poor he's been
I think he will obviously try something but based on the last few stages I can't see anything sticking. I think he's already lost to much time on Quintana, Froome and even Valverde to get the win overall. He'll do well to overhaul one of them and get onto the podium, unless the top three blow up themselves.
At least he'll make it interesting. |

Quintana lost last year 3 minutes on Aru in Andorra's stage. You never know what will happen in Aubisque |

Apparently for some people it's hard to understand what racing means. People can roll over and call it a day, or they fight and take initiative, bend the race to their favor. Worst you can do in sports is not to be bad, it's not to try.

But Contador is riding with numerous injuries, has a weaker team and also he's what, 33 now? Almost 34. He's getting past his peak while Froome is in the middle of his and Quintana is just getting into his.
I think everything is against Contador. I think from this position he will do very well to get onto the podium. I think the overall win is out of the question for him. |

I'm not saying he shouldn't try. I'm saying that his team chasing the break all day is pointless and a waste of energy. |

Yes.
Rolf Sørensen has spoken to the DS on Tinkoff, Lars Michaelsen, also a Dane. He said the injuries have hampered Contador, but should be 100% after the rest day. Now, whether thats true remains to be seen, but that would explain why Tinkoff is controlling the brake. |

It's not pointless when Nairo, Froomster or Bala have a possible disadvantage over him or lose some of their advantages when they head into the climb, eg Movistar helpers more tired. It's speculative and can backfire but because he isn't the best climber in the race, he needs to gain ground by employing other tactics. It is cycling 101 really.

So it's both speculative and cycling 101?
I just think his team would be more use to him on the final climb then they would on the flat. These are professional cyclists. They can all ride on the flat in a peloton all day long. The tiredness of Movistar/Sky will be minimal compared to that of Tinkoff.
It just seems like a bit of a panic to me. It's like he's saying "shit, I'm 3 mins down, I need to do something/anything!!!" |

Looks like I was right!
Pretty good last km or so but everyone waited a bit too much on the climb. Would have liked to have seen Chaves win really, but we saw a sort of Froome-Quintana battle, even if it was somewhat ruined by that horrible sight of mutant sprinting.
