I am aware we have a Rio thread but since this is still a cycling forum, we sure need a Rio Cycling thread. 
The men kick it off already on saturday, with the women following a day behind. Time Trial events are next in order, whilst the BMX and MTB boys and girls will compete from 17th to 21th August, of particular interest will be how Sagan will do against the MTB dominators Schurter and Abaslon (More than a Top 10 possible?). Many track cycling events throughout the period, too many to list really.
Olympic road race parcour is well known to be a toughie and a thing for one-day specialists. 237 kilometers. Climate and small team size will make it extra tough to control and to sweat it out. Steep climbs with avg. gradients of 9,4% and 6,8%.
Favourites include the names of spanish spearhead  Balaverde and JRod, almost-man  Jalaphilippe,  Daniel Martin and Giro winner  Nibbles.  Froome has his eyes set on long period of peaking with ambitions for Vuelta, so he is doing both road race and time trial. Just like  Richie Porte, Froome has not got any decent one-day results ever, so it'll be interesting to see how they both do, coming off a high at le Tour.
Colombia does have a dream team of almosts in shape of Chavito, Henao and Uran Uran Uran Uran, with Quintana and Betancur missing the action. The dutch and belgium have several leader options too:  Poels and Mollema have won each a big classic this year, whilst Kruiswijk and Major Tom are quality riders as shown in their Grand Tours. Belgium is similarly set up and has one of the best options for a potential sprint in form of GVA and PhilBear, additonally pologne winner Wellens is known for attacking far out.
Former world champions  Kwiatkowski and  Rui Costa may not have the form in recent weeks but they sure have the smarts for a top result.
Racing on saturday starts around 13:30 UK time.

My tip for Sagan is somewhere around 6th-10th spot, if he will not fall out when trying to catch the trio of Schurter-Absalon and Kulhavy (strange you have not mentioned him as ruling OG winner and silver medailists from recent WC). 
Track - i dont care much , but i will maybe watch points race and team pursuit
Road - Froome for the TT and Nibbles for road race.

I genuinely think Impey will win the aroad Race here.
Either way, it's probably going to be similar to last year due to the small teams a large break will form and win.

Road I'll go for Alaphillipe being hungry after the near misses in the Tour, keeping his condition and taking the win. He's good going down and fast from a small group too. |

Ahh, i see...very nice from you.
I guess first four places could go to Schurter-Absalon-Kulhavy-Marotte, then guys like Cink, Stirnemann, Giger, Fontana and Sagan as the wildcard, hard to judge where he can realistically aim.
Not sure if 22 years old Koretzky is starting in senior category at OG...

The Swedish Olympic Committee decided to not to send any male cyclists to the games although Sweden has two spots in the road race. Strange.
On the womens side we have Emma Johansson. She has said that she will retire after the Olympics so I hope she can do well here. A medal is realistic and gold is not out of reach although it will be very hard of course.
Track will be interesting too. I came back from a four day long jungle trip in the Amazon rainforest a couple of days ago, where I met the parents of kiwi Aaron Gate. We had some hours to kill and without any internet connection what so ever we talked a lot cycling and I got pretty excited for the track events! Aaron will represent New Zeeland in the team pursuit event. Apparently the GB team breaks world records in their training ahead of the games in that discipline so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

They probably don't think it's worth the expense. What are they realistically going to achieve with no genuine medal hope and only two riders. Also if the better riders have turned the slots down because of the various health risks then they will end up sending their 4th or 5th choices, so then it becomes even more pointless. I guess sending a couple of riders with equipment and backup staff costs a bit of money. |

Denmark has already won.. their jerseys are amazing!
Valverde is the favourite, but I think Nibali with the perfect prep and the perfect route will win this one. Heres the hope that Belgium will make it hard from the beginning in the classics terrains before the real big climbs the last 3 rounds.
Either way, I think it will be a very good race. Have been looking forward to this race quite a while now! |

The climbs remind me of the Mont St Clair- remember that?
Navardauskas might be in with a decent chance, especially if it comes down to a bunch sprint among the selection- EBH could do well as well. If it were five years ago, Gilbert would be pinching himself, but those times are gone.

Ian Stannard
Very strong team.
Stannard, Cummings, Thomas and Yates can drive very fast pace and Froome can make difference on Vista Chinesa and he has descent and tempo skills to drive to the finish.

In the MTB I think many overestimate sagan, Without being a truly avid follower I think 6-10th most likely but more like 11th-15th that podium. Hope the newly crowned U23 WC Sam Gaze can do well after getting the spot over Cooper. 2nd in World Cup U23 so interested to see how he stacks up.

My winner has to be Bardet. Simple reasoning: Vuillermoz goes up the road in a mid-stage breakaway and everyone is marking Jalaphilippe out of contention. Meanwhile on the penultimate descent of the Vista Chinesa, Bardet sneaks away with a couple of others and they reach the foot of the Vista Chinesa with 1min over the main group and on the climb Bardet drops everyone and catches Vuillermoz heading over the top who pulls him along for most of the flat to the line, but then drops away with 5ks to go, and Bardet loses a few seconds of his 30 second advantage at 5ks to go but hangs on for the win.
