Le Tour de France 2016 | Stage 17 | Bern > Finhaut-Emosson

It's Colombia National Day today. If Nairo has any sense of occasion, this would be it. It's also exactly 3 years since he first won a stage at the Tour! Like everyone else has already said, if he has to mount a further challenge, today is the last shot. I've been disappointed with his performance so far. Come on, do something today!

Iirc that is his only stage win at the Tour? That is also pretty lame, for such a climber, i would expect better of him. Come on Nairo, show us something! Smile

Nairo's sense of occasion begins and ends with "Oh look, I'm 2nd on GC, job well done lads."
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

He need to attack to get 2nd in GC, he is more than a minute from Mollema.

Movistar another man down:

52km in the first hour and still going with 60km down now and the bunch back together. When it eventually goes the peloton is going to sit up in a big way but any group will need a very big lead to survive the last 2 climb combo too.

ianrussell
70km now and still flying with Majka being the latest attacker to be reeled in (unless he was just picking off a few KOM points) = ouch!

Today is the day where the reign of Bauke Mollema will start Cool

So it looks like the break is nearly formed - lead 11 have just over 30 seconds on a small concerted chase with original counter attack members now drifting back to 2 mins down and the peloton now 9 minutes back from the front of the race.

Lead 11 are:
Kangert, Clement, Pantano, Durasek, Gallopin, Majka, Sagan, Pozzovivo, Morabito, Zakarin and Feillu

3 Chasers nearly there are:
Lutsenko, Van Avermaet, Voeckler

Those drifting back from the counter attack:
Pauwels, Losada, Costa, Alaphilippe and Plaza

Missed chance for Costa and Alaphilippe in particular there, considering the 3 about to make contact with the lead were with them a few kms ago.

Picking out a few likely winners I'd say Zakarin (no descent finish and the one descent is not at all techincal and is short), Majka and Pantano in that order. Oh and Sagan obviously because it's any stage in the TdF Pfft

Great to see even with how big Sagan is, he will always be a team player. Could be a key rider for Majka if any attacks happen in the flat before the final climbs.
Looks like the 'obvious' Majka and Zakarin battle will occur as I predicted. Since I'm positive Zakarin will get a free role today unlike Kangert etc.
Zakarin also has spent way less energy during the tour so far and even today not sprinting for KoMs. So he might edge it

wondering why Sagan need to be at breakaway anyway.
Kangert told that he is totally empty after Giro..and there is no chance that he will get better. No hope there.

Seems the peloton have just started to ride - so likely max gap was a little over 11 minutes.

Thats the point I tried to make Pfft He dont need to feature at all, but since he's there, he will be of great use. Sagan was already pacing alot so Costa/Alaphillipe/Pauwels couldnt join and will be even more useful for Majka when we are nearing the climbs.

Thanks for the info on Kangert, has seemed under par for the whole tour so wondered what was wrong with him. Bit odd by Astana not sending Fuglsang or even better, Rosa then.

Right, it's Forclaz time. I'm hoping for some action this stage as the race sorely needs it and what better a battleground than this daunting pair of climbs.
