La Grande Boucle The Tour de France text based game
For the last month I’ve been writing this story where the reader can place themselves at the centre of the 2016 Tour de France. It is basically a choose-your-own-adventure game where the decisions you make effect the story. This kind of interactive narrative is something I’ve had a blast planning, and hope you enjoy it.
As an example, this is an excerpt from the game:
In the spirit of interactive sport narratives like the 2K NBA games or the upcoming FIFA, I wanted to do something similar – I’ve always liked my Be a Pro game modes to come with a story mode, especially when it comes to cycling.
Here's the HTML link: https://philome.la...oucle/play
It takes around 1-2 hours to play through. As it stands the save function has been buggy (damn Javascript!), and your progress may be lost if you close the browser or turn of the computer.
If this is something you would like to see more about, let me know, I had a ton of fun planning and writing it.

Love it so much after just one minute. Gonna rise to glory with Yates, Juuls and, of course:
Chaves <3
EDIT: Yates over Chaves Seriously this is beautiful stuff man, just great.
EDIT 2: Voeckler has quite a big role, apparently He nodded at me *sighs*

Thank you! If you want to restart, I've made a seperate file that changed the script so that Chaves is the team leader

<3 Thanks . How did you make this, out of interest? I can see the scripted bits (which cause a couple bugs), but I'm interested to see the different story trees, etc.
EDIT: Found a mistake when (spoiler means spoiler)
takes the jersey from
by the pyrenees
has the jersey back without explanation

It's made in the program Twine, and mostly uses a mix of choices and variables, like this:
When it comes the writing part it's basically just trying to think of the different choices the player has made and write from that.
Regarding the bugs, I'm sorry! I looked through all the writing and played through it, but must have missed a couple of things (hopefully nothing gamebreaking!). When you've been staring at the text for a month, you become quite blind to it! |

Nothing quite like telling you to Spoiler chase Thomas Voeckler so that Spoiler Thomas Voeckler can counter

Just at stage 1 but I think it's absolutely fantastic so far
Do the choices you make really make for different scenerarios? Are there many different scenerarios? |

This is amazing! Great job!
I played with Direct Energie and finished 2nd with 3 stage wins
Just a couple of bugs I thought were worth mentioning:
Spoiler And at the end of Stage 15 I was +1.44 (behind Quintana) on the GC but after stage 16 I was +3.12, (behind Quintana) even though I finished in the front group, then after stage 17 where I finished with Quintana I was now +1.03 to him. As well as on stage 20, which I began in third, 1 minute down, on the final climb I was told I was in the yellow jersey which was a little bit confusing but not game breaking. I can udnerstnd how it's hard to avoid mistakes liike that though, must be hard working out the time gaps.

Thanks for the good response everyone! I've been quite nervous about posting it but I'm glad you like it.
Some of the choices matter and some don't. For a more detail answer, look under the spoiler:
Spoiler There are basically four different endings, of which 1-3 are variants of each other. These are effected by the choices you make during chapters 14-20. Originally I had planned for seven endings, including one where you win the mountain jersey (with a more detailed rivalry with Voeckler).
Regarding things like Quintana actually being good; I started writing in June and haven't really changed the results based on this years Tour, otherwise I would've made Dylan Groenewegen win the green jersey |
