European Championships 2016

Er, I wouldn't go that far. If my guess is correct, you've got the Super League now- who needs Mourinho and Pogba when you've got Peter Reid and Nicolas Anelka?
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

I liked most of the matches in this tournament, but have to agree that the system with the best 3rd placers which qualifies is just awful. Nevertheless we had some exciting games.
About comparison of WC and EC I'd say that the WC is more entertaining while the EC has a higher tactical level.

Well done Portugal. Though I think it was a case of France losing the final rather that Portugal winning it.

France were clearly the better team but they played like they were scared of loosing. They reminded me of watching England this month. They were clearly the better team, they dominated possession but they looked like they were playing in second or third gear all game. They never really got going and only created 1 or 2 real chances.

To lose a final is one thing. But to lose when you are clearly the better team because you were too scared to play is even more of a bitter pill to swallow. Those French players will be full of regret for the rest of their lives because apart from possibly Sissoko not a single one of them did themselves justice last night.

Yet another proof that a better team will beat better players 9 times out of 10.

Roll on the blood bath that will be Russia 2018.

I'm very happy for Portugal. They deserve it after the 2004 heartbreak. For such a football country this is huge.

Ronaldo is the world's best player ever now IMO. He has been world class for over a decade (only Messi also has it) He has won everything with United, everything with Madrid and won with national team (no one else has it). He has put goal record in PL, La Liga, CL, EM, VM (no one else has it).

Messi can only put goal record and win something in Barcelona's tiki-taka system. Pele played in a time when everyone was amateur.
MaradonÄ™ only played one fantastic season and had his career ruined by drugs.

I better like Messi, but it is due to something else entirely. As movie and look me/passing ball to me attitude.

Forever the Best
I also think that Ronaldo is mentally tougher than Messi, the point which I think Arberg27 was stating

So, 16 teams it is in 2020, no? Many horrible matches and generally a really low average level of play in this tournament. Never got into this tournament.

Then again, I feel like the WC outperforms EC massively every time, probably apart from the horrible 2010 SA WC. I never seem to jump on this bandwagon. We need the Africans and the Americans to make a proper show, Iceland making it to quarters speaks volumes.

The same critics that were made to the WC's expansion to 32 teams. The World Cup is even more predictable - who wants to see Honduras or Australia?

My guess would be everyone in Honduras and Australia. Grin

i dont understand how Island Can be a part of your agument, they won 6 matches in the qualifier, came 2nd in the group.
Then at the group stage they came 2nd again, so they would be in the quarter finals no matter what system.

A country of under 1/2 a million people, in stead of blaming them for big country's horrible play, would be more fair to just bow in respect.

I think it's silly to measure a player's ability by the titles he has won. Alvaro Arbeloa is a two times CL winner, two times EC winner and world champion. No one would call him one of the best players to have ever played the game (with all due respect to Alvaro Arbeloa Wink ).

This doesn't take away anything from Ronaldo's achievements, and of course it's a different story to lead Portugal to an EC title. Just making a point. If Cristiano would have been born in Finnland, he would still be among the best players in the world despite maybe not ever playing in a WC.

Won't touch on the Messi can only do well with Barca part, I'm still trying to cope with the thought that Pepe has won the EC, that's hard enough Pfft

As for the EC in general, in my opinion it was mostly disappointing, but I haven't been emotionally hooked from the beginning, so maybe that was part of it as well. Arguing whether or not Portugal deserved it is moot, no team played well enough over more than maybe two matches to be considered the best of the tournament, Portugal was the most efficient, that's it.

On this note, Djimi Traore won the Champions League at Istanbul. And I'm a Liverpool fan

I'm pretty sure this is legitimate proof the Riku Riski is the greatest to ever play the game.

Argentina has a world-class team and has lost in three finals in a row.
There is no excuse.

Messi remembered for being the star at incredibly good Barcelona team and win much with them and to lose three finals with Argentina.

Ronaldo remembered for being the star at United, Madrid and a mediocre Portugal team and leads them all to great victories.

For me Ronaldo might be the better player, but they are extremely close, they both have things they are better at than the other, eg. Messi has better free kicks, and Ronaldo has better penalties. I'd personally rather have Messi on my team, but that's just me.

When I think of Messi, his titles aren't the first things that come to mind. I value the incredible amount of amazing moments he has created on the pitch, both with his individual skill and the synergy with his team mates, much higher. Now arguably I've followed him much closer than Ronaldo, but I don't remember many of those moments from CR.

Again: You argue that CR is the best of all time because he won certain titles with certain teams, I say that's not the unit I measure greatness in. I suppose it's a matter of perspective.

Also a matter of perspective: I think the importance of national team titles is incredibly overrated. Messi leads CR 8 to 4 in national league titles and 4 to 2 in Champions League titles, both of which require a far higher amount of consistency against stronger opponents, and involve far less luck.

I understand and respect that people think CR is the better player, I don't, but it's a subjective matter anyway, so it's all good Grin

I wouldnt say Portugal is a mediocre team right now.
It was when Bento was managing Portugal because of shit team selections.
He was calling players like Carlos Martins, Postiga etc..

Currently it has several very good young players, some of the performed well in the Euros (Sanches, Raphael) some of them didnt perform that well (J.Mario, Andre Gomes) but these are great foundations.

Rui Patricio was incredible last night and all the playoffs. Cedric much better than Vieirinha at RB.

I just wish Ronnie let Raphael take free kicks all tournament. I might actually watch BVB matches just for Raphael Guerreiro.

What are you arguing?

Now Ronaldo is good because Portugal is shit or Portugal is good because Ronaldo is shit?? Both are european champions, and wouldn't be without each other.

How can Portugal beat France in a European Cup final in France without Ronaldo and be a mediocre team?

Ronaldo has no synergy with his team mates, really?? I can show you some quotes before and after this Euro.

Spoiler
Kirchen_75, rewatch the final and the plays where João Mário had 200 million Euros Pogba on his pocket and then say again he didn't performed that well.

Ronaldo made a difference every time Portugal had need him most. In the group game he got them further towards Hungary, made a difference in the penalty shootout, making a difference in the semifinals and in final he made a difference off the field. Ronaldo is the best football player both on the field and off the field.

Ronaldo also missed the penalty against Austria. Otherwise Portugal would've faced England in the 2nd round, France in the Quarter Final and Germany in the Semi-Final. What a strategic miss Pfft

(Kidding but what a stat!)

Messi is a great player when Argentina/Barcelona plays excellent against e.g. United States/Getafe, but when his team not plays excellent e.g. Chile/Atletico can he nothing.

What I mean with mediocre Portugal team is that the team not played excellent. They defend well and waiting on Ronaldo makes the difference both on the field and off the field.

lol Ronaldo has made amazing moments ever since he was born.

Ronaldo has a very good statistics on penalties.
Messi has a very bad statistics on penalties.

Sometimes is it post out, even for the best. It is not because he shoots 2 meters beside as Messi makes.

But it has no importance anyway, when he got them further towards Hungary.
