TDF 2016 stage 9: Vielha Val d'Aran - Andorra Arcalis

Flip.
When I left the stage, Dumoulin was being dropped by George Bennett.
When I returned to the stage, Dumoulin had won comfortably- and it was raining.

Yes 3 mins on Ventoux, TTs and descents.

As there not is something exciting about all the jerseys, sees third place exciting out, now that Aru lost time.

Well I've been in a state of mixed emotions for the last hours. Bennett awesome, hope he can pick up some form now. Bit of bad luck but I don't think he would have won. Obviously picked up some pointers from Conrad Smith yesterday Pfft

Well played Quintana but Yates and Martin really punching above their weight Grin Great stage until Arcalis, not the greatest finishing climb but oh well. Still good stage Smile

Dumoulin is the first not-sprinter since Bernard Hinault in 1983 who won stages in all 3 grand tours in the time frame of 1 year.

With sprinters, it was Cavendish in 2011 who performed this feat

Dumoulin explained he was just riding his own pace on the penultimate climb because he said he knew people would blow up there and then have nothing left for the final climb.

Costa did a similar tactic.. and look where they both ended up. Tactics in cycling is great Grin

I guess the heavy rain hampered the race action actually. Froome didn't want to attack, or maybe was tired by yesterday, Quintana probably waits for the 3rd week for which he always peaks, and the others look at the moment strong enough to ride with them, but not good enough for better results and you couldn't say they didn't try.
Also great rides by Yates and Dan Martin of who I'm now excited about if they can hold this level the whole three weeks.

They all attacked at one stage or another it's just nothing stuck. Saying that plenty lost time on what wasn't an overly hard final climb even if the previous climbs would've sapped the legs. I enjoyed it - great opening hour then mountain point sprints and attacks at the death.

Quote from Dan Martin:
"In the final kilometer it was a headwind, and because of that it became difficult to try something there"

Dan Martin is on amazing form here, now if he would only stop attacking every 4 seconds and then pacing along race favorites, maybe he can stick with the leaders.

I knew Tejay was going to have a bad ride once the weather turned bad. Every single time he screws up this bad it's a weather excuse. Too hot, rainy, cold, etc. He really needs to figure out how to fight through it or he'll never be able to survive these race.

Porte showed him up today and I still think my original prediction will end up as the outcome. Porte will be a better climber but have his bad day, and BMC will end up with nothing.

Even worse ride by Aru though. He was considered one of the top guys but just didn't seem to have it today. I wonder what will become of that.

Overall an interesting stage but not the epic showdown that I expected from the hype. And even the time gaps to guys like Tejay who lost a lost of time were not big or detrimental much at all. Still a long race ahead for a bunch of seconds to be won or lost.

Edit: A couple of other guys who really lost it today: Kelderman and Rolland. Rolland obviously crashed yesterday but I don't know what Kelderman's excuse is.

Also Mollema attacked - twice even, just to make sure you didn't miss it Pfft

Ah, didn't know because he wasn't bandaged and the commentators never mentioned that, nor did I see an article about it.

Since flipping Wilco sucks hope Bennett can get free license to do whatever the hell he wants for the rest of the Tour, today was promising.

Keldercrash at it again. I heard he is having trouble with his eyes, but I guess you really can't attribute his crash down Peyresourde to that. But he really can't catch a break, he looked good so far. Top-10, Bauke Mollema good, not more.

Just read thanks to some trainstation wlan spot in cologne that Bertie abandoned and now I wont get to cheer him on Ventoux. Heartbroken. Sad

Were people actually expecting big fireworks on Arcalis? As a few have said it just isn't that hard of a climb to cause trouble so Froome and Quintana were always going to finish together. Also why should Quintana go crazy or attempt to go crazy today? We are only at the first rest day and he's sitting exactly where he needs to be, he won't get killed by Froome in the TT and I am yet to see any evidence that Froome will outclimb him so all looks good for Quintana to win this Tour.

Also anyone notice the went pretty fast up Arcalis today into a storm, faster than 2009 Contador and 2007 Menchov, Evans, Sastre. Only a few seconds slower than 2000 Heras but no surprise they were just under 2 minutes slower than Ullrich in 97. I wonder what this new clean generation will do on Ventoux if the weather is good Wink

Quintana indeed rode the super tactical Pyrenees. Not even a single watt used above what he had to, just marking rear wheel of Froome, who is using much more energy it seems. So far everything looks perfect for Nairo and possible Tour win! Smile

Froome saying this is the hardest Tour he's ridden so far.
https://www.skysports.com/cycling/news...-than-ever

Maybe that's why he felt the need to go rampaging down the descent on stage 8.

On Contador:
"I was quite surprised to hear that Alberto Contador was in his car. It's a shame he's no longer in the race. It would have made the Tour even more exciting that it already is. The change for me is that we won't have to chase his attacks 100km before the finish. It's something less to worry about but it's a pity."
