What a disgrace this 21st century clickbait generation media is. Team actually plays a lot better without Ronaldo but during celebration it's all about him. Did they even showed Rui Patricio once?

They didn't show him that much on TV, but the ESPN commentators talked about him almost as much as they talked about Ronaldo during the trophy presentation.

Sure, the 4th Balon D'Or for CR7 is fact, but IMO the MVP of Portugal is Rui Patricio. The match could've gone the other way if it wasn't for his saves. This match showed that Portugal is not dependent on CR7 only - like if he's out, the others are lost cause.

So, 16 teams it is in 2020, no? Many horrible matches and generally a really low average level of play in this tournament. Never got into this tournament.

Then again, I feel like the WC outperforms EC massively every time, probably apart from the horrible 2010 SA WC. I never seem to jump on this bandwagon. We need the Africans and the Americans to make a proper show, Iceland making it to quarters speaks volumes.

Hah, yeah, Portugal was probably the most deserving team, but man. They really should have been eliminated in the group stages. I guess a win is a win!

The same critics that were made to the WC's expansion to 32 teams. The World Cup is even more predictable - who wants to see Honduras or Australia?

I'm not saying they're great but not seeing the best Asian team in Australia would be terrible for globalisation Wink

Vidal also missed penalty for Chile, which meant that it was still even back and forth until Biglia missed for Argentina. CR7 was just on the right place at the right time after Juanfran missed for Atletico.

Also for Arberg27, here's this:

I prefer Barcelona over Real Madrid, but Messi will never be as good as Ronaldo. Ronaldo wins with all teams, Messi can only win something in Barcelona's tiki taka system.

Sorry, could not find a picture out psychopath Pepe.

None of the Asian teams got past the GS in Brazil speaks for itself and the level of the football the AFC. The quota system is wrong - the 4th CONCACAF team for example is just a filler team as Honduras is just there to make the numbers

Gotta say I felt/feel Portugal are a really poor side but my god are they well coached they really have done well considering there struggles against Poland and Croatia but all it takes is one/two magic moments and it can all come togetherGrin

Disagree about them not deserving it though all teams/people that win anything in sport deserve it as that is the beauty of sport you beat what is in front of you on the day and they have massive congrats

Not really ahah. If you guys want to know who's going to win 2018 WC and become rich, you can ask me when the time comes.

I stopped commenting on this post because people didn't seem to tolerate my opinion and the discussion would never end.
I shut my mouth and kept believing in my country while seeing all your comments criticizing our performances. You know you dont have to play well to win, right? Even though, I think we played really well overall because the players completed each task given to them by Genius Fernando Santos. I told you we were gonna win it and there you have it. I didn't just say it, I used some valid arguments but some people just didnt care, whatever.
French press is ridiculous with all their comments about our football, but i guess we shut them up. Didier Deschamps press conference was obviously to disguise their agressive play today. Payet's tackle was ridiculous and even when Ronaldo was subbed off I kept believing that we could win it because as i've told you before, Portugal is not just about Ronaldo. I cried,of course, but that was because Ronaldo didnt deserve it. No one deserved more this victory than Ronaldo for everything he has done for our country since 2004 and i'm really happy for him, he can rest in peace. Obviously the french were better in the 90minutes but Patricio was amazing, Man of the match. But that was in the 90minutes. Everything changed when Master Fernando Santos switched from the usual 4-1-3-2 to the old 4-3-3 with quaresma and nani playing on the flanks and eder as the pure striker of our team. Eder started winning air balls and we became more dangerous while the french became more nervous. Extra-time was ours and then magic happened. Funny fact: Every single portuguese criticized eder since he started playing for the national team but after the game everyone called him a hero. I'm happy for him too.
We deserved the trophy. People might say 'only won 1 game', but that's wrong. You can't win a knock out stage tournament without winning all the games, so I guess extra time and penalties count as well. Wink
Never been so happy in my life. PORTUGAL!
And now, for all the haters and specially because of the french press's commentaries we have written a little song:
Pouco importa, pouco importa,
Se jogamos bem ou mal,
Só queremos ganhar a taça,
Para o nosso PORTUGAL!
(Google translate if you dont understand).

You should've just kept quiet. Portugal is still not a favorite. It's like the EC win by Greece. Luck is a big factor in football. The final win(their only one) was well deserved though, altough France played better, but this final sadly was very low quality, looking at the game itself, you wouldn't think that these teams are in the final of a tournament right now. The Ronaldo tackle was ridiculous, yes. I would've liked to see him on the pitch until the end.

Maybe Hondurans or Australians? Mate, try to have some respect for smaller nations. We won the Asian Cup last year, we have been to the Confederations Cup several times in the past, and we made it out of the group stage in the World Cup in 2006. In 2010 we came third in our group, not qualifying for the knock out group stage based on goal difference. In 2014 we were last in a group containing Spain, the Netherlands, and Chile, which we were never going to qualify from. Regardless, we only lost 3-2 to the Netherlands, including pulling ahead 2-1 at one point.

What more do you want from us? Have some respect.

I quite enjoyed most of the tournament, and the final once it opened up when everyone got tired. Sure, a lot of the tournament was played on the back foot, but much better than the last Euros, definitely.
I think Portugal deserved to win the tournament- they were lucky in part, but sometimes you make your own luck. Ultimately it was an example of two teams who were knocked out at the World Cup group stages- us and Portugal- who had two conservative managers. One of them abandoned their principles, felt obliged to play on the front foot all of the time(which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and never knew his best formation- the other is a manager who has valiantly stuck to those principles in order to make his team hard to break down, and has found a formation in which every single player knows his role.
And, even better, he's weaned the team off Ronaldo.
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

I enjoyed most of the tournament too. Congrats to Portugal, although they're not a team I enjoy watching, even more so this time around. But they stuck to their guns and pulled off the upset. France were the best team in the tournament in my opinion, besides the Germany game. But if you fail to take your chances in a final, it usually comes back to bite you.
The match wasn't very exciting and I actually switched the game off and went to sleep after 90 minutes (it was 2:30 in the night). Kind of got the feeling then that Portugal would nick it. And they did. Doing it without Ronaldo was commendable. Tbh, Ronnie turned up in two critical games, against Hungary and Wales. Although not a fan of him, it wasn't nice to see him stretchered off last night. The 12 year outsiders victory trend continues. Who'll win in 2028 I wonder Pfft

On another note, putting in my two cents on the whole small country debate. I live in a country that, despite it's size and football following, has never qualified for the WC. I doubt I'll ever get to see us there. But I'm a huge football nut. Just getting there would fulfill my fanboyism. Will we be competitive against the established teams? Probably not. But isn't that moment what footballers struggle for all their lives? Iceland was a good story at the Euros. Leicester was a brilliant story in the EPL. Events like these are what makes sports. Otherwise it would be like that Nike ad where perfect clones replace their human counter-parts.
