I'm new to PCM2016 and so far very frustrated. I've eventually got a 3D race to start without crashing (but still not reliably) and completed one or two individual stages. However I've not been able to work out how to save a race or stage. There doesn't appear to be any save button or command. I've noticed that there are lots of saved games when I press 'Load' so assume some automatic saves are taking place but these are all randomly named. There's nothing in the Help pages about this.
Can someone explain the basics of how to save a race/stage. I want to be able to step through the stages in the Tour and save at any point, retaining the driver standings - must be straightforward but I'm still in the dark
You just exit the game and it automatically saves your position. When you start the game up again you click "load last saved game" to go to the one you were playing last.
If you want to go back to a different save then click "load" and all of the saves you have will be available.
To add to that they are named in the order that you started them, Saves happen after every stage.
I can't remember the save location off the top of my head, and won't be on my computer for a week so can't check (staying with family for the week) but if someone else can direct you to where they are saved then you can rename them there, to make it easier to tell which one you are loading from the in game load menu, which would be useful if you have lots of saves.
The only thing to remember is to progress to the next stage/day after you carry out any actions. If, for example, you change a riders training programme and then exit without progressing a stage/day it won't be saved.
I'm not sure if there is a reason why they don't just have a save option. Possibly because the game is so prone to crashing it's safer to auto save after every stage/day rather then leave the player to do it manually

No that's not the reason. After each race there is so much new information which has to be stored (fitness, stage results, race results), so they decided to save everything.

Fair enough. Although my reason is possibly just as true
